Re: HSA via WEX (or will I get a choice?)

I just rolled most of my HealthEquity HSA to Fidelity. I left the minimum in Health Equity to keep it open for payroll deductions.

The only downside was it was done by Health Equity mailing a check to Fidelity. It took a few weeks of being out the market to complete.

Vanguard closed Roth after transfer out?

I transferred a Roth IRA from VG to Fidelity last month with no issues. It was done entirely from FIDO end, with no communication with VG by me. I received a letter in the mail today from VG stating my brokerage account # xxxxxx was closed as of 1/3/23. I log into VG and see the account they closed was the Roth that had a zero balance. All my other accounts (brokerage, Traditional IRA and UTMA) with zero balance are still open.

Is it normal for a zero balance Roth to close after balance is transferred?

I was not planning on closing the VG accounts until after taxes were done this year.

Re: Vanguard blocking withdraw?

I called VG this morning and found out the funds were locked from withdraw due to being from a deposit that was the third party check from a month ago.

The only easy way to withdraw the money was for VG to mail me a check. That is now in motion.

The other method would involve VG reaching out to the bank that the third party check was from and validating there was funds in that persons account?

It does not make any sense to me since the check I mobile deposited cleared weeks ago.

Re: Vanguard blocking withdraw?

I only have funds in the settlement at this point. I transferred all other shares (ETFs) to Fidelity 2 weeks ago.

This error is sort of validating my decision to move over to Fidelity!

Vanguard blocking withdraw of 3rd party check deposit?

I am trying to transfer funds from my Vanguard brokerage to my linked bank account. This has worked for previous withdraws with no error. I have sent a secure message to VG asking what this error means, no response yet. Hoping someone here has seen this before. The funds have been in brokerage settlement account as cash for over 2 weeks. “The shares you're trying to redeem were recently purchased. To protect your account, we can send the proceeds from the sale of those shares only to the institution and account from which they originated. To complete this transaction, you can choose to send the proceeds to the originating institution and account. If you purchased the shares by check, or if you have questions about this transaction, contact ...

Re: I just added a bank account on treasurydirect.gov!

I am wondering if it be possible to use the Vanguard settlement account for this? Enter it as a direct deposit on Vanguard to get an account/routing number? I would like to send the proceeds from from I Bonds that I redeem directly to VG, so this would be only to make deposits from Treasury Direct, not withdrawals from VG.

I suspect I need to wait until I get an invite to the VG Cash Plus account to try this.

I thought I also was invited by email this week, but it was for the “Vanguard Cash Deposit” program instead of “ Vanguard Cash Plus Account”!

It is a little confusing with similarly sounding programs you need to be invited to join.

I am waiting for the Vanguard Cash Plus Account invite to make use of the ACH transaction capability.

Vanguard automatic investment from bank vs direct deposit

I currently have VG pull from my bank account every payday and buy VTSAX. Twice a month, 15th and 30th.

I am wondering if there is any issue with changing this to have my employer direct deposit this money to VG into my settlement account and then have an automatic buy of VTSAX from the settlement account twice a month.

The end result should be the same, but it eliminates the money ever going to my bank.

What happens if VG tries to do the automatic buy from settlement account and the direct deposit did not arrive for some reason? Does settlement account show a negative balance?

Re: 401k Roth and Rule of 55?

Thanks for the replies. It is very helpful. I am in now in the 24% bracket married, file jointly, and in PA (3.07%). I believe PA won't tax 401K distributions, but does tax my contributions. Between ages (55-59.5), I think PA will tax 401k distributions in excess of my contributions (cost recovery method), which I don't believe will happen after 30 years of maxing out the 401k- I should have enough contributions to avoid this. I would like to manage down to the 12% bracket when retired by having the different buckets to pull from. For many years, all I did was focus on saving as much as I could in the traditional 401k and never thought about how I would take out. Now that I have started thinking about it, I realized my Roth bucket was empty...

401k Roth and Rule of 55?

As I approach possible retirement in a few years, I realized this year my lack of any Roth contributions (401k and IRA) could be setting me up for tax issues in the future when retired. My 401k has been 100% pretax contributiuons since starting it. I started to divert a portion of my contributions to Roth within the 401k this year. If I retire at 55 in 2025 and start some penalty free distribution under the rule of 55, does that also apply to the portion of the 401k that is Roth gains? Or do have to wait 5 years and wait until January 2027? I don't expect the Roth portion to be very big in comparison to traditional but may want to use some of it as part of a plan for taxes. Along with this, I started Roth IRA's for my spouse and I this year...

Moving 403B to rollover IRA at Vanguard

My wife has left her job as a teacher aid a few weeks ago. She has 403b at Vanguard from this employer. We went through the VG retirement site and followed the options to roll this over to a new rollover IRA to get better investment options.

The transaction status for this says it is “Awaiting plan sponsor approval 5 - 7 Business Days (if eligible) Pending”

Does VG proactively check with the employer or does it wait for employer to notify them employment has ended?

VG has already created the new rollover IRA account under her log in, with zero balance.

Re: Who had a low interest mortgage and yet made a substantial payment in the last 18 months

We sold a vacation home that we owned outright in December and paid off the mortgage on primary home with the proceeds, about 120k. Mortgage was 3.625% and had 7 years left.

It was more a psychological decision, rather than financial, to now be debt free in my last couple of years of accumulation before retirement. It feels good to know that we are debt free, and that is the intangible I can’t place a value on.

We did invest the remainder of the sale proceeds and now make monthly investments in place of the mortgage payments we were making before. All in VTWAX.

Paid my property tax bill in person for the first time ever this year rather escrow via mortgage and was happy to do it!

Re: Rule of 55 and 401k provider change

I guess my question should have been about rolling 401k into a new one at a different employer if I take another job after I retire at 55.

If I rollover 401k after I retire at 55 into an IRA, I guess I lose the penalty free withdrawals.

Rule of 55 and 401k provider change

I know that I can retire from my current employer in the year I turn 55 and then begin to take penalty free withdrawals from my 401k associated with that employer.

What happens if I decide to transfer my 401k to another provider for better investment options after I start the the post 55 withdrawals, say when I am 56?

Does moving the 401k from my final employer’s plan to another provider break the Rule of 55? Will withdrawals from the 401k now be a subject to the 10% penalty until I am 59 1/2?

My employer’s 401k plan is limited in investment options and would like to be able to invest somewhere after I leave with a wider variety of MFs, ETFs, and Treasuries, but obviously don’t want to incur the 10% penalty to do this!

Re: Bond allocation if have Pension

I have a cash balance pension that I can run instant estimates on to see current value. It adjust monthly, always up due to accounting for the employer’s contribution and guaranteed minimum growth of 4%. (It could be higher if IRS third segment rate stays above 4%) I use the current value of the pension in cash as a bond equivalent when determining the rest of of my asset allocation to be at a 60/40 overall. I only started to do this this year and was probably overweight in bonds by not accounting for the pension previously in my asset allocation. I spent many years in TDF’s in my 401k that had a glide path that did not take the pension value into account. At this point, at 52 years old, the pension value is almost a third of my total asset...

Re: Vanguard website kept timing out. Could not place trade. Very frustrated!

I sent an exchange around 330pm to move from VTSAX/VTIAX to VLXVX 2065 TDF. I have 2 more days to wait until I can get back into VTWAX due to multiple TLH moves since beginning of May. I was hoping for a larger drop, since I have a lot of gains to off set from liquidating all my ESPP shares in April. At this rate, I may not owe any additional tax next year with a few more TLH moves!

Any thoughts on how Large Cap Index VV/VLCAX compares? I know it is a few more stocks than VOO but seems to track the same. I ended up in VLCAX after a few TLH moves from VTSAX over the last month and now have gains again so may be here for a while.

I use TQQQ as my play casino investment. I send my 10% VA disability payment every month to M1 Finance, $152 month and it auto invests in TQQQ. It is a very small part of my overall asset allocation, and has replaced my playing around in crypto. I could never sleep at night if had any money in there that I could not live with out. I see it as a lottery ticket with better odds and it is enough fun to keep me interested. Thank you so much thegasmaster for the response. Good response. Do you trust M1 Finance with your money? How is your money protected with M1 Finance. Just asking to understand the risk of M1 Finance broker. I never heard of that broker before. Thank you, M1 is as secure as any other brokerage I suppose, with SIPC coverage. I...

I wrote into my 401k plan provider to ask where the rule of 55 was covered in any of the documentation. They confirmed I would be able to take penalty free withdrawals at 55 if I retire. The only place it is mentioned in any documentation was the first bullet point in the annual “SPECIAL TAX NOTICE REGARDING PLAN PAYMENTS” These seem to be generic points and not specific to my company. “The 10% additional income tax does not apply to the following payments from the Plan: • Payments made after you separate from service if you will be at least age 55 in the year of the separation; • Payments that start after you separate from service if paid at least annually in equal or close to equal amounts over your life or life expectancy (or the lives o...

How to consider a Cash Balance Pension in planning and allocation?

I am 52 and want to retire at 55. I have been at my employer since 1994 and have a cash balance pension that is currently worth about $500K and projected to be $640K when I am 55. It grows from employer contributions of 8.5% of my pay and also an investment credit tied to a Minimum Present Value Segment Rate published by IRS, usually 4-6%. It is guaranteed to go up 4% a year. (I am lucky in that new employees stopped getting a pension in lieu of an "enhanced" 401k match.) I can also leave the pension to grow under the current rules until I want it, without any employer contributions, when I retire. I am wondering what thoughts are on in considering this lump cash balance in my overall asset allocation. I have no control of it unti...
