Re: Should one invest in gold? If so, how and how much?
For me this topic starts out so easy and then it gets so complicated since there are so many variations of the theme. From inflation hedge in an orderly society to end times. I always thought of gold as a hedge for “lawyers guns and money”times short to medium term disruption credit card machines down atm not working. I need X and gold will buy it for me. After reading “Locusts on the horizon” I came to have a very different view when they run through various society collapses in history. The bottom line is in an orderly society there are so many other more convenient ways to hedge inflation and in a total collapse it becomes too cumbersome to be very valuable in the medium to long term. The book is cheap and filled with practical informati...

Re: Vanguard or Fidelity
You can close your eyes and flip a coin both are good companies. I have accounts at both but the bulk at Fidelity. Every now and then I need to speak to a human being to ask a question about my account and I have found Fidelity phone and investor center service people to be competent and helpful.
Vanguard has not been as easy to access for me, I always feel like the person on the other end of the phone is doing me a favor and I’m keeping them from their regular work.

I consider 529s in the bottom tier of tax advantaged accounts, right down there with Series I bonds. Good to consider once you have fully funded the best tax advantaged accounts, if you still have money leftover.

Re: Trading Treasuries (nominal and TIPS)
That's interesting, thanks. I also have a Schwab account that I checked and it appears there are multiple options to buy just one TIPS ($1,000 minimum). I'll have to check the Vanguard account periodically to see if the minimum quantities change. Interestingly, Schwab seems to have ask better prices than Fidelity for the few mid-2040’s TIPS that I looked at. It seemed to be about a 15bp difference. I was comparing quantity of 1 at Schwab with the best price at Fidelity. So the exact same bond Schwab sells for 15bps less than Fidelity? That seems unlikely but I may be missing something. Treasuries don’t have central clearing like stocks, so each brokerage may have better or worse prices. Schwab often has better prices than Fidelity or Vangu...

It’s funny not in a good way that 18 months ago people were creating phantom trust accounts to game the system and put more money into I-bonds than the 10k max per year and now all the posts are about not being able to get your money out.
I like my TD account but am very concerned I’m leaving my wife / estate a nightmare in trying to settle the accounts. Bottom line for me is buying anything other than I-bonds through TD is too much of a hassle and im beginning to think for the i-bonds the juice isn’t worth the squeeze especially considering the very limited amount you can invest each year.

Re: Bank’s savings account vs. US treasuries
The one downside to VUSXX versus VMFXX is that you sometimes have to think a day or two ahead to make sure you can move funds like you want to. You can sell directly-held T-bills on the secondary market, which means you probably will have funds to work with more quickly, but you may lose money on the transaction due to interest-rate movements. Shess on the last paragraph you talk about selling individual t-bills being faster to liquidate than VUSXX or VMFXX can you expand on that I’ve found t-bills especially smaller quantities harder to sell. How do you sell them typically and get the cash so quickly? I’ve been using SGOV for that sell anytime liquidity but pay a few bps for the convenience. Apologies: I was speaking to the ability to ent...

Noob question: is there any reason to put cash into savings account vs. buying short term treasuries, other than the liquidity advantage? Treasuries pay about a percentage point more. I wondered this, too. At this point, I'm about 18 months into experimenting with T-Bills, eventually centering on a 12-rung T-Bill ladder. I rolled over my first full-year holdings in the fall (so, a 52-week T-bill matured and around the same time I purchased a replacement). I also have been doing things like parking my property-tax funds in a T-Bill maturing a few weeks before I plan to pay it, or parking some temporary holdings for 3 or 6 months while I figure out a long-term plan, that sort of thing (the sort of thing I used to do with Ally no-penalty CD a...

Re: Is Speed Queen still the "King" of washing machines?
I never saw the appeal of Speed Queens. Yes they're used in laundromats but I don't think that necessarily makes them better. Maybe easier to repair but the heavy duty'ness is more likely to cost you in wasted electricity and water than any sort of longevity of the machine. It's like thinking driving a heady duty truck to work would somehow mean it'll last longer than a Honda Civic. Perhaps it'll stand up better if it ran near 24/7 like a laundromat machine but parts wear out due to age just as much as cycles. In home use a heavy duty washing machine could even wear out faster simply because it's not designed to sit for days on end without running. Picking up on the above post I really like my new LG I really hate the “efficiency” part if ...

Unless I'm missing something it seems that you don't know the effective interest rate on T Bill bought at auction until after the sale - is that correct? Is there a benefit of buying at auction vs resales? Given the current interest rate environment is there a "sweet spot" for interst rat vs the term length of a T-Bill? Thanks in advance for helping this rookie. When you actually consider the amounts you’re dealing in and the period of time you are investing a few bps here or there don’t really matter much. I politely disagree with just buy a stripped Camry crowd, the cars are very different in price but also in quality and feel. If you can afford it buy one if not I guess get the Camry. At 160K some guy texting and driving rear ended me and destroyed the entire trunk section and of course it ended up being a total. If I want to lower my overall purchase price for my bond fund, buying shares now at the current price -9.48-will reduce my average, overall price, regardless of interest rate influence. Is this correct? Yes, this is correct. As for folks who say don't market time, just tell them you are rebalancing which is really what you are doing. But instead of using average market price paid, why not set an asset allocation (AA) such as 60% VTSAX and 40% VBTLX and just try to maintain 60/40 (or whatever AA) going forward. That will take care of inflation, gains, losses, dividends, and any price movements automatically for you. If you really want to Market Time, then come back and I will tell you how you can do it. Thank you- I do/did have an AA of 50/...

These sorts of windows usually have springs on the sides that assist them up and down and hold them in place when the windows are open. Mine just wore out and we had to pull the windows and replace the springs on the side and they are back to being like new again. So I’m guessing the springs are broken or frozen in place.

To my mind Friends and Family dictate regardless of taxes. And as others have pointed out "high tax" states and cities give you and the people around you a lot for your taxes, services and benefits low tax states could never afford to provide. Excellent emergency services, world class public schools, excellent and safe public transportation, a comprehensive social safety net and low crime neighborhoods, aren't free and need to be considered.

My point is there is always a bit of mist on these things so the first question is, is the risk worth it is there a serious gain possible and second is this money I can live without for a long time? Comparing it to some S&P 500 fund etc misses the point because if they are comparable why bother with the illiquidity and risk. Hope this helps, I wish you the best of luck if you dive in.

If you live in California you are likely aware our insurance situation is in crisis, especially homeowners. I don't say that lightly. Our auto insurance increased substantially (40%) on 6-month policy renewal last month. I was extremely unhappy, called my broker who shopped our policies to 4 additional markets around with zero success. Unsatisfied I called another broker recommended by a friend who shopped the package as well, again unable to achieve a savings. I then called two captive companies directly who would take some of out policies but not all, but even then the savings was miniscule. Super frustrated I called back to my original (current) broker and started asking her to start shopping the individual policies opposed to the packa...

Our family lived outside of the US in Asia North and South for many years with every possible advantage and it was a grind sometimes but also very interesting and a real adventure. One observation I will make is that the location cure does not work and chinks in the armor become chasms if you are running from anything it will follow, and catch you. Re: Social Security claiming questions
I'm confused by the question since you have both reached FRA why does your income matter? Per the social security website..."Beginning with the month you reach full retirement age, your earnings no longer reduce your benefits, no matter how much you earn." or am I getting this wrong I had dinner last night with a friend who is 75 telling me about how they keep reducing his social security benefit because he makes so much each year so maybe I just don't know how this works?

Re: Is anybody actually running out of money in retirement?
I thought I addressed that in my signature , If you/they want to pay someone to ride herd over a portfolio of index funds I say go for it. If someone prefers to buy funds with high fees and a fixed 1% or 2% management charge for an advisor and focus on living well below their means I agree it should be just fine, horses for courses!Call_Me_Op wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2024 8:14 amLiving below your means is the real key, IMO. I know lots of people paying an investment advisor who are doing fine. I don't know anyone doing fine who spends beyond their means.

Re: Dividend Stocks vs T Bills?
Poster above is right your proposal doesn't make sense you really need to study some of the basics of the three fund or two fund portfolio and decide if they BH way makes sense for you. But when I read your post I assumed you were mid 70's not mid 30's.Beensabu wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2024 12:22 amBecause you want your stock:bond asset allocation to be 100/0 instead of 35/65 all of a sudden for no particular reason?
I wouldn't call going from 35/65 to 100/0 risk mitigation. I wouldn't call it diversification either. Is it just helpful from a risk mitigation standpoint to diversify?

Simple low cost investing without "advice" from an investment sales person definitely puts the odds in your favor.
