Re: solo 401k
We setup a second company where my wife is the owner but didn't funnel any income to it yet. We work on the internet so we can decide which company gets paid. The first company I am the only owner but could she get a solo 401k contribution as a spouse as it's an account that we own setup thru fidelity? Or since we file joint taxes is the income "ours" and this we both made the income and she can contribute to the solo 401k also? This is my first year trying to do this and I'll be showing my accountant this thread also so thanks for your help!

Guys I have already contributed the max to my solo 401k. Is there a way to have my wife also contribute max / another $52k for this year? Were both "employed" by the company we own. Is this as a spouse contribution or an "employee" ? Thanks for your help!

Re: mom wants to "sell" me her condo for estate planning
You should take the house. Maybe have her sell it to you for $1 or something. My father in law's mother just had to sell her house and all her assets to pay for her nursing home costs and it has essentially spent all of her assets down to nothing included what was a paid off home. If the home was in your name or at least you were on the title the home could have passed to you instead of the money being spent. Re-titling the home, even without considering the look-back period, might have opened her up to various kinds of liability. So it's not a clear win. And frankly, not all seniors want to give up control of their home, even to close relatives. As for "instead of the money being spent": the same amount of money would still have...

My wife and I and both of our families all use airvoice wireless $10 a month plans and love it. Airvoice uses at&t's network. I'm an internet guy and it just takes a little adjustment to getting used to wifi only data for you phone, but there's wifi almost everywhere and for the few times there isn't it's good to have a break.
In fact most of our $10 a month phones now have like $50 on them from rollover money.

Thanks we definitely want to be in a warm part of the island and are very familiar with the Waikoloa area.
For car rentals just goto the local car rental places, or is there a cheaper way to do it since it's a longer period of time, 2-3 months.
Also for surfing and biking would it be better to rent this stuff or buy it and just leave it there?

Hawaii for winter
My wife and I (no kids) are going to do hawaii for this winter thinking 2 or 3 months. We prefer the Waikoloa area on the big island. Couple questions for those who might have done this:
Thinking of renting a home from vrbo or homeaway for jan-February or jan - March . Suggestions or a better options?
What's the best way to rent a car for that long. Would like a jeep so we can haul surfboards or something but still put the top down, or a convertible .
Which brings me to my next question, would like to try stand up paddle boarding, surfing, and biking, but obviously I can't bring all these things with us, or bring them back home. Suggestions?
Other stuff we havn't mentioned?
Thanks!

You should list how much is in your portfolio, and how much debt and cc debt you have. First thing is to probably pay off your cc debt which gives a guaranteed 6% return.
Also nobody knows what will happen in the future , so having more stocks or more bonds could perform better. There was almost a 10 year period recently where bonds performed better.

Ok I'm looking into this. Thank you for your help
Is the business "profit" before the 401k money is subtracted as an expense?
Also our corps are S corps.
The calc at http://www.solo401kcalculator.com shows I need about $145k each to get to the $52k for 401k, Is that not right?
Also if the business has $50k in expenses that means I would need 50k more income?
Also fidelity had several calculators in the retirement section but I didn't see one that pertained to solo 401k. I surely could have missed it

solo 401k
I have a solo 401k for my wife and I. I want to max out each 401k to the maximum allowed 52k each for a total of 104k. We have two businesses one for myself that will fund the 200% match, and a different business for my wife which will fund her 200% match. How much income/profit is needed for each company to be able to contribute the max 200% match which is $34,500 plus the $17,500 personal for a total of $52k each. I mean doesn't the companies have to make a certain amount of income/profit to be able to contribute this much?
Anything else I should be aware of?
Thanks!

the good news is most of your friends that are 30 have $0 saved and are maybe even in debt and possibly still living at home... trust me I know plenty who fall in at least 1 or all 3 of those categories at 30. So now your enlightened, better at 30 than at 40. read this forum everyday, and max out your 401k into the lowest cost expense ratio index funds you can. Don't chase individual stocks they're too hard to guess. Start saving as much as you can because you don't want to look at your portfolio when your 40 and say damn I still only have 100k and now I own a house and have debt to boot! Remember 100k isnt alot when you make 100k a year thats basically only 1 years worth of money, the more you save the more you'll enjoy life because lots o...

My wife and I have the $10 a month plan thru airvoice and a few other people we know. We are actually up to $30+ on each of our phones from rollover. We just use wifi everywhere because there is wifi at our home and office and we don't really need to get in the internet on our phones the other 5% of the time. That would save you another $240 per year per phone.

It's either your site was hacked or you have malware (virus) on your computer. Either way the hack or the malware is redirecting to an ad site.
Easy way to check your computer for virus is scan with a virus scanner, avg free is fine, and then use the program called malware bytes and scan for malware.

don't worry too much about owning a house vs renting when your young. My example I bought my current home 10 years ago and and I'd be lucky to get exactly the same amount I paid 10 years ago not counting all the property taxes I paid, and replacing appliances and furnaces, etc etc
Plus owning ties you down and you have to pay expensive realtor fees when you sell or die trying to do a for sale by owner

At 75 basis points on $7m your spending $52k per year just in advisor fees plus probably high expense ratios on your funds, so possibly another $70k or more. You could easily go with a low cost 3 fund boglehead portfolio and save $100k a year or more. Or ditch the advisor and just keep the current holdings or rebuy into them and still save $52k a year

I just upgraded to the ipad air. It's amazing and the new size is significantly smaller yet uses the same size screen. Wifi only is what we've had for years and works fine. Also the battery last longer in tests, the battery takes hours less time to charge, and it's a lot faster too. If you had an older ipad the resolution will be much greater.
We also have 16gb and it's fine . That will be just fine for books, if you download a lot of movies to the ipad then you might need more space but you can just delete the movies your done with.
Also don't buy the $80 case from apple but get like an $8 from ebay or amazon. Just get a case that covers the front and back.

Although it's only 2% it's still over 5 figures so I thought I'd ask you nice people what your thoughts of it were being down 40%+ and if you thought it was a good time to buy or if there was more trouble on the horizon.
However with all that said I'm gonna wait til the day they solve the govt shutdown as we all know there could be some serious drops until then.

With the US bank cash back plus can you leave the categories the same each quarter? For example always have 5% cash back at restaurants?RyeWhiskey wrote:I use a combo of two VISA cards:
PenFed Platinum Rewards - 5% Gas, 3% Groceries, 1% all else

Gas, groceries, and restaurants tend to be my biggest expenses and I'm traveling at the moment so the hotels are a nice bonus.
But for a single card it's hard to beat CapitalOne Cash Rewards at 1.5% on everything (and it's a VISA/MC so no AMEX hassles). Is the extra 0.5% on the Fidelity AMEX worth the "we don't accept AMEX here" problem? I'd say no.

I think you guys should also look at http://www.ThirdFederal.com if your in a state they service. Current 5/1 arms are 2.79% plus closing costs or 3.1% with only $495 closing costs. They have other plans like a 5/1 10 year payment plan at 2.44%. The best thing about them is after you have the mortgage with them you can pay $495 and relock in their current rate without having todo a whole refi and it resets the 5 year term. I did this with them at the bottom and got a 5/1 30 yr payment term at 2.35%! Always an option, but risky if they every take away the rate adjustment WITH reset option. PenFed for long would reset the 5/5 term when you did a rate adjustment at 1% of outstanding principle. They took away this option about a year ago. Long...

Re: PenFed 5/5 ARM at 2.875%??!!
I think you guys should also look at www.ThirdFederal.com if your in a state they service.
