Re: IRA rollover rules to buy CD's

If you have not taken possession of the 401k money yet there is a simple method to rollover the money from the 401 to an IRA at whatever institutuion you chose. Vanguard has a form that you can fill out. I do not know if it is all done online or you print the form, complete it, mail it back to Vanguard and they will contact the 401 plan administrator to get the funds to your IRA at Vanguard. Vanguard will create the IRA based the information you provide and deal with getting the money into the IRA. This all takes about 30 days. Some 401 plan administrators seem to take a long time to release the money.

Back in the day there was a lot of enthusiasm for small cap value. I do not know if a bet on EM or SV will pay off in 20-30 years or not.

I would not overweight unless I was sure I could go for long periods of less than stellar returns. Long term is not 5 years but 15+ years.

If you can't understand the article then I would stick with your stable value fund. If you understand the risks of a bond fund, then with a long term time horizon an intermediate type bond fund that has a high % of Treasuries would be a good choice. Don't invest in anything you do not understand.

My experience has been real estate are fairly good in any negotiating process. They are not on your side but listen and bring you along a bit. The last house I bought the my agent was pretty sure that I would go no higher and the the seller's agent thought the same of the seller would not budge, so she and the seller's agent agreed to cut their commision rate in order to get the sale. I would tend to agree with you that an agent who has a stake in both sides of the deal might be more willing to take a bigger cut in order to get the deal done. I think your tactic might work if it is a buyer's market because you would not be competing with other buyers.

Core inflation was 0.4% for May. It has been 0.4% for the last 3-4 months. The Fed is hoping that it comes down. Who knows what the Fed would do if they were not worried about more bank failures. Don't count on interests coming down as everyone expects.

The back the dump truck up time was in 2021 when dumping bonds was the reasonable thing to do.

I would get rid of the small cap and emerging market funds. Vanguards total international already has emerging markets and I would not overweight to EM. The only reason I would have some small cap is that a 20% allocation relative to the Vanguard Institutional fund could approximate a total stock market index fund. The institutional fund is a sp 500 index fund. The total stock market fund has about 20% small and midcap companies but trying to match that doesn't seem to matter much, if at all. I would not overweight any of the size or value/growth or other sectors but just stick with the total market funds and the sp 500 institutional indx fund. I would pass on all of the high fee funds. For bonds, I would use the total bond market fund from...

It is an agreement amongst themselves. I do not know if this agreement could be broken in dire circumstances like a great depression economic collaspe. There is also a cap on the value of an annuity that they will take over. Thanks, I switched back to 60% VTI and 40% BND I think you should work on developing a long term plan that is based upon the long term risks of stocks and bonds and your goals. Then you should understand your need, willingness and ability to take risks with your portfolio. Jumping back and forth based upon short term results is self defeating just as taking more equity risk than you can handle. The last thing you will want to do is respond emotionally to a 30%-50% decline in stocks valuation and sell near the lows. So get your need, ability and willingness to take risk right and staying the course for the long term is somewhat easier and produces much bepper long term performance. Bond valuation results in 2022 surprised many because they ...

Two ways of looking at it.

1)You can afford the risk as your pension is your backup plan if stocks plunge at the wrong times or have a bad run.

2) You don't need the risk because your pension will cover you if average returns are lower due to a safer portfolio

A lot can happen in 10 years. Inflation during 2022-2023 was not expected. You can take a guess that inflation might be in the 2% range, but even if that happens your real dollar value of your annuity is reduced by about 22%. That is the best expected case. Then you have to consider the next 20 or 30 years. The standard advice here used to be wait until at about age 75. You will minimize credit and inflation risk. Your mortality credits will be much higher. Between now and age 75 you may find you do want an annuity or need an annuity. You can always put the money you would use to buy the annuity into some TIPS that mature 10 or 20 years from now and buy the annuity at maturity. That said, you'll have some here who think that because they saw the "writing on the wall" in 2021 and sold bonds before 2022 that you can market time with success - they just got lucky. Instead, if she were to withdraw ~$3500/mo ($170,000 / 48 months) from the IRA as a 4 year gap filler while deferring taking Social Security until 70, she would likely come out ahead. Thank you for your response. Do you mean that deferring Social Security until 70 is a better option because it will keep up with inflation? Yes, this is the better option. Use her savings to cover the $1000 per month to age 70, start taking SS then. This is a true CPI adjusted annuity for life. You can sell stocks from your taxable account and immediately purchase stocks in your stock protected accounts by selling those short term bonds. I would avoid short term capital gains taxes though by just haveing cash if the need might be less than a year. Look up the capital gains taxes on short vs long term gains.

Interest rates have gone up for about 1 year. As interests rates rise, the NAV of a bond bond goes down. You are now getting a higher interest rate on your fund now than in the past. The inflation adjustment occurs once or twice a year. You can look that up for your fund.

You have zero credit risk and have an inflation protected bond fund. TIPS funds are a good long term holding. If you did not know that when you bought it then figure3 out what you want to invest in for the long term.

The longer you wait, the more mortality credits you will receive.

Re: What to do with a longer maturing CD at First Republic?

I have several CDs maturing in the coming months, one of which is in July. There are calculators you can find that may help but of course they do not help with the future direction of interest rates. If rates come down a lot over the next several months you will regret not doing an early redemption and vice versa.

I am staying with my CDs because I do not know the future and the calculators say I am better off avoiding the penalty and letting the CDs mature. Rates have come down a bit recently but we have seen this happen at least once in the past year only to see rates go back up. It all depends on the Fed's reading of the economy.
