Re: Replacing appliances--buy dumb

I hate my new dishwasher. It doesn't heat dry the dishes like the old one did. And, to remind you to open it when done in THREE HOURS, it beeps 10 times. If you fail to open it, it will remind you again in like every 30 minutes for forever.

If you still refuse to open it, the dishes will be wet still until you open it and let them air dry.

Major step backward. Yet, supposedly saves energy and the "environment".

Re: Management Strategies - Entrenched Bad Staff

I wonder if you have asked the problem employees what motivates them. The reason is because different things motivate different people. I tend to send poorly done work back to people and have them correct it themselves, too. Keeping some notes on the number of errors could be helpful to you and them and then privately working with them to reduce those errors might help them. I reward people at work with small gifts for excellent work, and public praise, often via e-mails copied to their work teams. I've also given praise via the company's HR tool and via LinkedIn recommendations. I make sure that I praise the people doing the great work and copy the people that are not doing what they need to do. They often get the message via my silence on...

Re: Who gets selected for layoffs?

There are different reasons. Sometimes, poor performers are targeted and other times, good performers are impacted, too. I personally never conclude that a person was doing a bad job just because they were laid off. I know some people that do, but I have not found that to be a popular opinion. A layoff can be a good thing. I was laid off once and had gotten my best review of my life and a 10% raise signed by the CEO that same year. Then, laid off. Praise God, I looked for a job for 5 weeks, collected unemployment, and found another job with same pay at a better company in a better area. Because I was given 5 weeks of full severance pay and also got the unemployment pay, it was, for many years, the highest 5 weeks of income I had ever receiv...

Re: What should I do about neighbor riding his ATV on my property?

I'd call the police the next times it happens. If he comes a knocking again, be prepared to be firm and tell him this is your property now and you don't like it. No "friend" would sell you property and then get mad at you for telling folks not to trespass on it. Unless you agreed to that when you bought it. I had a guy do this to me when I bought a house on property he used to fish on. I added signs, built a fence, and it all culminated in a confrontation with him in my yard. I politely told him to get off and stay off my property. He thanked me for calling the cops on him and said he had the police chief's permission (a neighbor) to trespass on my property. I went down to the police chief's house as a neighbor and told him what t...

Re: Sure wish Jack was here to opine

Different noise affects different people in different ways. My wife gets anxious after reading her ipad and the news but even my wife said that, yes like 300 people have died but lots more have died this season from the regular flu. My prescription is to avoid news websites, news apps, news e-mails, and 24-hour news channels on TV. Those folks are looking for a story to capture attention and this seems to be the story of the season. I try to stay grateful, spend a lot of time looking around me and being grateful for that and not worrying about what happened in the other 49 states or especially in another country. This strategy of having an asset allocation has worked great for me for the last 9 years. Our net worth more than doubled in thos...

Re: iPhone 6s - upgrade to 11 or 12?

If it still works, I would just keep it. I have a google pixel 2 and it's enough for me. I think the latest "phones" just have more camera modes. I've actually seen some of them that are too big for my hand so I have to keep an eye on that. I like to hold them in my hand to make sure they still "fit".

The Pixel 2 is perfect for example, although almost a little too long/tall. The width is fine. The pixel 2xl is way too big though. I want it to fit into my pocket and be able to hold it in one hand and type with my thumb a little. Some of the fancier phones I cannot do that on.

Re: Pay off credit card bill before I actually recieve the bill? Credit rating implcations?

This post reminded me of the 1990s when I used credit cards. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Sadly, I have no advice for you on this topic as I no longer use credit cards. I save up and pay cash for things that I need. If I do not have the cash, I do not buy it.

Re: Mortgage vs no mortgage break even w/ inflation

With debt, the interest in the first years is much higher than 3%. For a fixed 30 year at 3% starting now, the first payment will be $695 with $412 going to interest. This is 59% of the payment, not 3%. Also, the total interest paid would be $85,000 at the end of 30 years. People use the low rate to justify having debt. You have to ask your self if you know for 100% sure if you could year after year get 3% return on that money. The answer is no. Some years, it will be less. In some years, investments lose money. There is risk associated with having a mortgage. What if jobs are lost and income stops? Then one could default on the loan and the bank gets the home and all the equity you built as a "free gift". Your investment disappea...

Re: Another mortgage refi question: 30 to 15 year?

I refinanced from 30 year to 15 year about 2-3 years into a 30 year. I think the fees were around $3000 back then. 3 years later, we paid off the entire house. It got us excited about the goal and was one more big step towards getting it paid off. That lower interest total is what we focused on. Over 15 years, the interest was like 1/3 what it would be for 30 years. I think that money savings dwarfed the fees.

So, it may depend on how dedicated you are to the long term goal of getting it paid off.

Re: Request to review portfolio - 39 years old family man

You should get a lot of good advice here. I did when I posted a long time ago. I've done well in the past 8-9 years of being a BH. Now I am in the two comma club and have plenty of sleep at night. 54 y.o. here. 1. You don't mention about adjusting your AA as you get older. You are 39 years old and want only 20% in bonds. This seems too aggressive and risky to me. I have tried to keep my % bonds the same as my age. At 54, I have 52% in bonds since my wife will be 50 this year. Our average age is 52. I would see this more and more risky every year as you get older to maintain the 80% stock AA. 2. Your house debt seems large to me at 640K. Do you have a plan to reduce this soon? 3. You're right about all the tiny percentages of stocks being ha...
