Re: French Language Learning Program

Pimsleur will get you speaking and understanding basic French the quickest I think. It is, however, weaker in vocab and grammar. Many polyglots I have seen online recommended starting with Pimsleur to get a base understanding of the spoken language then moving on to Assimil for deep learning of vocabulary and grammar.

I am using Pimsleur to learn French now and highly recommend.

Re: Buy vs. Rent

I have only ever rented so I cannot give advice, but Ben Felix made two great videos about the “5% rule of thumb” and how to decide to rent vs buy. I recommend a watch as they discusses how to make an apples-to-apples rent vs buy comparison with the main categories to consider and how to make this rent vs buy decision for yourself. Hope these help!

Swiss Alps are incredible during the summer. So many free/cheap outdoor activities, hiking, and spectacular views. Specifically I would recommend Interlaken, Switzerland. It’s a quaint, beautiful, town focused on outdoors adventure tourism.

Re: Roth 401K vs. Traditional 401K for Recent College Graduate?

My wife and I are in a very similar situation as your son, only a year ahead. We are both 23, graduated in 2021 and are at the top of the 22% marginal tax bracket MFJ, and will be in 24% next year (5.75% state). We are maxing both of our Roth 401ks and Roth IRAs. While we understand that all things being equal, the math works out to be the same, we chose Roth because 1. While our income is already high, (hopefully!) it will only increase over time. 2. Since we are already going to max our retirement accounts, $26,500 after-tax (401k+IRA) is much more valuable than $26,500 pretax. Especially before 40 years of compounding. 3. All arguments for Trad accounts assume you invest the tax savings in a taxable account. In practice, behaviorally, th...

Re: Is this really how it is? Saving for Goals

BluecollarKen, I disagree that it is a modest house. A modest house is less than 2X of your household income. You do not need to save in order to build the house. If you have to save, it is not a modest house. What is the cost of the house in terms of your household income? 5X? 10X? KlangFool Hi Klangfool, I have not posted much but I have been reading Bogleheads for over a year and have always enjoyed reading your posts and appreciated your insights. Can you explain your reasoning behind “you do not need to save”? Specifically in the context of a young couple who is “saving up” to buy our first house (and put 20% down) in a few years. Also - houses less than 2X income seem to not exist in today’s housing market for the vast majority of yo...

Re: Share your net worth progression

I am 23 and my wife is 22. We graduated from a great state school and got married a year ago. We are blessed to both have good jobs in great careers with zero debt, and to have read Jack’s books soon after beginning to invest!

I love reading this thread - I find it very encouraging and inspiring as a young investor. It really shows power of saving, investing, and staying the course. I look forward to updating this post for many years to come!

Re: Bogleheads Live: Submit ?s for Larry Swedroe on ESG Investing

Obviously ESG investing has been surging in popularity, with hundreds of billions (trillions?) of dollars flowing into funds that track ESG indexes. In theory, this amount of capital flowing into funds concentrated in “ESG friendly” companies would bid up the stock price of these companies, and decrease expected future returns. Conversely, “non-ESG” companies would not benefit from such inflows, and possibly suffer from less investment as large funds and investors sell non-ESG holdings (to increase their portfolio’s ESG score). In theory, ESG companies would have their ESG aspects already priced in, and non-ESG companies would have high expected return (albeit with more risk). So my questions are: Wouldn’t non-ESG companies actually have hi...
