Re: Problems with AVAS on hybrid vehicles?

I drive a Leaf and have the capability of turning the noise maker OFF with LeafSpy app + OBD Bluetooth module. But choose to keep it ON. I had an older Tesla with no backup noise and there were plenty of occasions where pedestrians were caught of guard when I was trying to back up. Now when I reverse and look in my mirror, I see a [profanity removed - moderator ClaycordJCA] look as the sound is an extremely cheesy EV backup chime. Sounds like a mix of Santas reigns and a golf cart beeper.

gavinsiu wrote: Mon Jan 23, 2023 5:19 pm Hi, I just install POPOS and is already stuck. First for some reason, the keyboard was set to Czech. After that was fixed, I can't seemed to sudo, it won't accept my password. I did check and my account can sudo. I am pretty sure there is a good explanation.

Sorry your already having these strange issues (i have not experienced these). Perhaps the password you typed during setup was using the czech layout, and now when typing the password it appears wrong to the system. I would try changing the password if possible or reinstall the OS and make sure your keyboard does not have a stuck key cap or ghost inputs

Re: Dipping my toes in EV? Tesla 3/Y Questions!

We definitely don't need a new car, we have 2 that work just well and we like. But I am a bit of a gearhead and I've been wanting to try out an EV for the last couple of years. With the limited time 7500 tax credit available on Tesla 3/Y, I am wondering if now is the time to try it out. A couple of questions for those that may own either of these cars or other EVs: (1) 3 vs Y : I am leaning towards getting the cheapest Model 3 possible. We don't really want to sell our two current (and paid off) cars (Acura MDX and RDX) as they probably have lots of life left and I like V6 engines and those are getting harder to find as time goes on. It IS silly since we could almost get by with just 1 car but contemplating getting a 3rd. But I want to try...

Re: Linux Desktop today how is it as a daily driver?

Running PopOS here. I used to have a lot of the same issues you described, where special work was needed to get broadcom drivers working, gpu driver install, etc.. But I found pop already seemed to have proprietary drivers out of the box. Not sure if their gui uses X11 but i have had no stability issues with it, the built in nvidia driver and my GTX 1060. The gui seems to take some of the best queues from macOS and Windows but ultimately has a dumbed down file explorer and not a lot of built in system settings. I really do prefer Windows and its robust file explorer, window management system, clipboard history, window previews, the volume mixer, etc.. Windows has the best gui. My old PC would not wake from sleep with popOS (AMD A8 Kaveri ge...

Re: Fidelity as a one stop shop

Just so I’m understanding, direct deposit’s going into the fidelity brokerage will always end up in my SPAXX. And if I want the higher yielding SPRXX, I will need to manually purchase it which will add the fund as an additional position. The goal would be to keep as much cash held in SPRXX as possible… And if I made an ATM withdrawal while 100% of the money was in the SPRXX, with $0 in core (SPAXX), the CMA overdraft features will just pull from my SPRXX position. Is this correct? I just want to make sure before I possibly trigger any overdrafts that cant be covered if the core SPAXX is at $0. Thanks

GSPC vs VOO vs FXIAX

I was checking the market news on yahoo and found SP500 was -0.28% for the day.

Meanwhile, some funds that “track” the SP500 were positive for the day

FXAIX : +1.44%
VOO: -0.30%
VFIAX: + 1.43%
GSPC: -0.30% (couldnt find where to buy this ticker, vanguard redirects to their SP500 fund when searching)

Whats with the large variance? The charts since inception seem to follow the same trend overall. But day to day it does seem to vary. I thought these index / ETFs were supposed to just auto rebalance with the market? Shouldnt daily performances be the same? And if they are different, how are they still following the same trend long term?

Thanks

Re: Tesla QC issues

This is in stark contrast to cars from big auto makers, that actually feel finished when you drive the thing. No part revisions, no updates, no gimmicks. Some people enjoy receiving continual upgrades and would argue you are getting much more value. I also enjoyed that feature until I woke up one morning to find my Model S bricked from a failed update. I mean sure, I like added fart noises and Netflix too. But this is an automobile we are talking about, not a PC. I prefer my automobiles to have stable polished software that is ready for the abuses of the real world. Tesla already had an extensive feature set and hardware capabilities back when the Model S launched in 2012. But the problem is they never refined those features and instead ju...

Re: Grandma's 16 year old Honda Civic

In this situation, i would consider taking the 16 year old civic into Honda for a good upgrade for brakes, rotors, high performance tires, new wheels, fresh suspension, steering rack, wheel bearings, etc. These are the main safety hazard points that can be brought back up to modern standards with a little TLC, and would likely outstop a modern SUV with the right tires and pads.

You might also consider getting the timing chain done, valves checked, etc… For reliability.

It might cost a few thousand bucks, but better than a new car in todays market.

I would put this money into it and enjoy for another couple years while the supply chains and used car market settles.

You will want to replace it with a 3-5 year old used Honda

Re: Replacement for Iphone SE?

Apple is close to ending software support for the first gen iPhone SE. The battery life is horrible, and general user experience a bit clunky due to the hardware limitations.

I think its best to purchase a new SE or previous gen Apple refurbished unlocked, from Apple. Try to keep the phone for atleast the full 5 years worth of software support, or until the manufacturers EOL (end of life).

Re: Tesla QC issues

I worked directly with Tesla EV's for many years and will caution any Boglehead into purchasing a Tesla: Everyone always focuses on panel gaps and battery capacity when Tesla's real issue is the electronics. Take a look in any scrap bin from a Tesla service center and you will find a whole landfill worth of broken beta parts like bricked FSD MCU's, broken charge ports, blown body control modules, etc.. all part of Elon's quest for "continuous improvement".. These cars have bleeding edge beta tech that is not ready for production. Cars shouldn't be this fast or smart for another 5-10 years. Todays materials and tech cant handle it reliably. But Elon is doing it anyway. It seems to me that a new Tesla part design will get rushed int...

Actually the difficult part of that concept to embrace may be that it isn't actually "my" money.
Yes you are correct. I have a hard time getting used to this concept but as a married couple for life, it is OUR money, not just mine.

Re: Easy income opportunities to fund 401K?

D) How much taxes would you save by contributing to Trad 401K instead? Not sure. I always followed the blanket advice of going Roth if you're a young adult. My CPA says I should have the largest trading gains as possible in Roth and encourages me to max my Roth accounts out... eyedrop, A) Please do not be confused. 1) There are 401K and IRA. 2) And, you could contribute to either Trad 401K or Roth 401K. 3) You could contribute to your Trad IRA or Roth IRA. 4) You could contribute to your spouse Trad IRA or Roth IRA. So, which Roth account are you referring to? Roth 401K? Your Roth IRA? Your Spouse's Roth IRA? And, why your CPA did not advise you to contribute your Roth IRA and your spouse Roth IRA? You still could contribute to your 2021 R...

Re: Set my life straight

Sensitive topic, but have you considered a pre-nup? I hadn’t until you said something and I’m super grateful you did! Had a short hard discussion with the fiancé about it and she said she would sign a prenup so a big relief! We plan on getting court house married by the end of the year for the child tax credit etc… She already picked up the documents to fill out for the marriage but I will need get spun up on the prenup process. She plans on finding a more legitimate and stable source of income once the child gets into school. And even then her passion of being a child care taker doesn’t traditionally pay much… But until the child is in school, she will be in charge of taking care of the house and family while I work. We want to avoid dayc...
