Re: pros / cons of retiring at a certain time of the year

I remember having these thoughts when I retired in 2011. What time of year, what time of month, maximizing health insurance coverage, squeezing out à few thousand here or there, how to use vacation, etc. I'm almost 100% sure that 12 years later you won't notice any difference.

Spouse and I finally got to an area trust and will attorney after hearing of another friends passing. I was not prepared for the divulgement and exactness required of ALL assets. We had to provide everything in hard copy, IRAs , Brokerage acct, Checking acct #s, Auto Registrations, life insurance policy in latest valuation. SSN#s , checking acct #s, The whole 9 Yards. Then ya gotta reveal what goes to who when the inevitable occurs. I was a mental wreak walking out of that office. Help me put this in perspective or is it just the gravity of the matter that we all must deal with. It just feels too foreign to tell someone these minute details of our life. Re: Dental Insurance

Insurance is meant to cover a loss you cannot afford, for example your house burns down. Dental "insurance" typically has a max payout of $1500-$2000 per person. Anything over that, you pay. As others have said, it's not insurance, it's a prepaid dental plan. Unless someone is "giving" it to you (like your employer) it's a waste of time to even consider it.

1. You have an account on bogleheads.org. 2. Hypothetically, the forum gets hacked and the hashed password database gets posted to the dark web. 3. I download the rainbow table and crack the password, if it isn't salted. I find that your bogleheads.org password is "Password1". I also have your email 4. Now I try your email and Password1 across different websites to see if you've reused them. I'm not trying multiple passwords, I'm trying one password against multiple sites to see what hits. 5. This isn't an attack that works against people with 2FA. But people with 2FA probably aren't reusing passwords anyways. And lots of sites don't even use 2FA. And there are literally top 20 banks in this country that don't use 2FA! https://2f...

Re: SoftwareGeek's Guide to Computer Security

Please note, if your password is less than 12 characters, I'm just going to crack it with my desktop computer and a 'rainbow table' I download off the pirate bay. Probably 30 minutes, it's just a snack. It doesn't matter how good you think your password is, or where you store it, I'm going to own it. Then I'm going to 'stuff' your password across 1000 sites to see where you've reused it, using an automated script. Total elapsed time, 2 minutes of work, 45 minutes of processor time. Please explain how this is possible when most sites will lock out after a few attempts with a wrong password. (Not that I don't believe it, but just wondering) I know it's possible to use brute force if you have the /etc/passwd file but that would be a rare exce...

We are not going to have any more online meetings - We will meet again in person when people are ready.

If you would like to attend meetings of local chapters, check out the Boglehead Calendar of Events - https://www.bogleheads.org/blog/calendar-of-events/

There you will see many local chapters who invite all interested people to join. With so many chapters having these meetings and inviting the public, it does not seem worth the effort to plan our own meetings.

Re: How much $$ to get kitchen cabinets painted?

I did it myself. The results are highly satisfactory. Started with builder-grade cabinets. I removed all the doors and drawer fronts for painting. I even re-painted a large portion of the job because we didn't like the first color we tried.

The secret is to use the right paint. Benjamin Moore Advance - - Satin Finish. Applied with a foam roller, and brush where needed... This paint goes on beautifully and you can't really tell it's not a factory finsh. It's also very durable. No chips or dings so far after a few years of use. I lightly sanded everything by hand, and used a good bonding primer. My Benjamin Moore store sells one appropriately called "Stix".

I have been on my board for over 12 years, mostly as president. I do it for one reason - to avoid a possible nightmare a rogue board. I'm sure you have heard about power hungry boards going crazy and foreclosing on people due to nit-picky violations. Then there are other boards who are not that bad but are basically dysfunctional. Whenever we have a board opening, as much as possible I try to recruit like minded board members. We are of the opinion that the board that governs least governs best. We have a management company, so it's not a lot of work for the board members.

I'm on the board of my HOA ... We don't have a problem with excessive rentals (but a nearby friend in a different community has exactly the problem you do and proposed a similar change - I'll check with him to see how his proposal went). There are many hurdles to making the change you propose- 1. There would be a question if the current owners who are renting their units out would be in favor, even if they are grandfathered. Some of them might want to buy more units and rent them out. 2. If current owners who are not renting their units out are grandfathered, the change might not have much immediate effect. My aformentioned friend proposed to grandfather current rentals but not all current owners. 3. My HOA requires a 2/3 majority of all ow...

Any guidance as to how to get that more towards 30% bond/70% stocks? Right now, I have 20% in stock in the Roth IRA, should I instead put 17% in stock and 3% in bonds in order to get that 70 stock/30 bond AA? This is a rather small move and does not get you to an overall 70 stock / 30 bond allocation. The asset allocation of each individual account (for example, trying to get to 70/30 in the Roth IRA) is not relevant, it's the overall allocation that you should adjust. Since you can't sell the individual stocks in the taxable account without incurring big capital gains taxes, you should move...

The way I check if a site is doing price vs total return (as they often don't make clear) is to check PSLDX which throws off a lot of distributions. On price sites it'll look fairly even over say 5 years, on total return sites it'll show a large increase.

I'm sure that I have done this in the past but can't find an acceptable site currently. Also searched the forum but can't find any help. 1. Note that I mean performance , not price . (Meaning - growth with reinvested dividends. Note that for bond funds, a price chart is almost meaningless). Most websites will have a chart that calls this "Performance" or "Growth of $10,000" 2. And, I want to be able to add a few other funds or equities to the chart, so I can see a good comparison. 3. A third requirement is that the time scale be changeable - usually things like 1 mont...

Regarding the Dell 5505 - I am quite happy with it. It has an AMD Ryzen processor and AMD Raedon graphics, 256 MB SSD. Performance is super! And the price was very low.

I think the sweet spot for SSD's is 256 MB. There are lots of options for storing more than that such as cloud storage, home network, or external drive.

We built an addition on one home and lived in it for 20 years. It served us well. Then we purhcased a newly built home in the same neighborhood. So we got to keep our existing friends plus make some new friends. That worked out great and we're glad we did.

The added-on house was ok, but there will always be some of the home (the old part) that's not ideal... unless you do a "This Old House" type renovation where they basically rebuild the whole house ... at probably twice the cost of building it from scratch.

I vote for the new house, in your current neighborhood.

If the actual shipping cost ends up being higher, would most eBay sellers reluctantly pay the higher rate? No. On eBay, the shipping cost that the buyer pays (to the seller) is set by the seller, and the buyer pays this agreed upon shipping price to the seller as part of the payement. 1. Packages bounce back and forth between USPS locations 2-3 times.
2. Packages routed to locations seemingly at random - for example, Trenton NJ to Tampa FL to Detroit MI. (intended destination in Michigan).

One would think if the system is overloaded, it would help to move items in the most efficient manner.

Re: Redeeming Series E Bonds

I had a large stack of bonds in my name, and wanted to re-title them in tne name of our newly-formed living trust. The only way to do this is to convert them to a Treasury Direct account. It worked out, but it was kind of a tediuos process. You have to open the account online, then physcially mail them the bonds, then wait until an agent gets around to completing the process. Seems like it took about a month altogether.

Once converted, it's nice. Every time a bond matures, it is automatically redeemed on the first of the month. The proceeds can then be transferred to your linked bank account.

By the way, I made sure to cash all bonds that were matured or within a few months of maturity, before starting the process.

Good to know that's not the case, at least for most of them. So my primary fear (being stuck somewhere with no way to get into anything) is easily resolved. Seems like one goal is to have a plan where logins from a remote location can be done reliably with a minimum of hassle but still be secure. Re: Question about Password Managers

When I started on the internet 25 or so years ago I had an 8 character fairly well known but uncommon word for my password which was fine for 10 years and across 100 or so places I registered at. Then the websites required a combination of letters and numbers in your passwords so I just added three numbers to the end of my password on any new sites I registered at. That was fine for another ten or so years and another couple hundreds places I registered at. Then five years ago they started requiring special characters and upper and lower case letters in passwords. So I added a $ or ! to the end of my password and capitalized the first character. So now I'm registered at probably over 500 sites and use the same PW from 25 years ago with jus...

Question about Password Managers

I know there are many threads already about password managers and I don't really want to start another, but I've read a lot here on the forum, and elsewhere, and I don't see my particular concern addressed. It seems that in almost all of the discussion it's assumed that the user is on his/her own device (usually a laptop/PC) using a web browser with a password manager. It's also assumed that all of the passwords to one's various sites are long and complex... to the extent that the user does not actually know any of them. This does not seem to be a position I want to put myself in. Say I am in a hotel lobby and I want to use the hotel's computer to print a boarding pass. I have no clue what my airline password is. Or say I am at the library ...

Definitely no in-person meeting. We are thinking of a virtual meeting soon but no definite plan. We need a good subject.

    Re: Quicken 2017

I'm currently using Quicken Premier 2017. I have no problem with the yearly subscription model -- it's really not that much different from the previous model except that you have to pay once per year instead of every 3 years. I might have you all beat... I started over 40 years ago with pencil and paper, and moved to spreadsheets in the mid-80's. (Entering historical data from day 1 at this point). Then I moved to MS Money (somehow got a free copy I think) and once again transferred all the data from day 1 into MS Money by importing everything from the spreadsheet. When MS Money was discontinued, I moved over to Quicken - the conversion went well as I recall. So now I have 44 years of income, spending, and investing data including IRA's and...

Re: Is a minivan worth it?

An enthusiastic, unqualified, "YES" to the OP Regarding the "stigma" of the minivan.... Where did this come from?? and secondly Who cares!! . Not on my radar. What's cool about "sport utility vehicles"? In essence, most of them are tall, boxy, 2-wheel drive cars, not particularly "useful" and not particularly "sporty". Most hold only 5 passengers and not much cargo. We're on our second minivan, 1990 Plymouth Grand Voyager, and 2000 Dodge Caravan! Love them. No "reliability" issues. The 2000 Caravan is nearly 20 years old and has never had a major repair. I just change the oil, tires and brakes. I literally can't count the number of times these vehicles have hauled large items (kids...
