Re: CA Scholarshare529– Regular or custodial?

Merry Christmas, Bogleheads! I’m hoping someone can save me a phone call to California Scholarshare529’s customer service line tomorrow. I set up a 529 with them online and almost hit “Sign,” when I realized it’s not entirely clear if I’ve established a custodial or regular 529. I revisited all the steps and there’s no special wording that makes it obvious. I don’t want a custodial 529. The only hint is that in the application, I am the owner and my child is the beneficiary. However, the term “custodian” is still used for me, the owner, which is technically inaccurate for a regular account, so in an abundance of caution, I don’t want to submit this until I know for sure. Has anyone confirmed what type(s) of 529s Scholarshare offers? And ho...

That’s pretty good; I’m seeking ERs under 0.1. I found CA’s 529 to be the least expensive with an ER of 0.06 for the US Equity Index. May I ask where you found the VG Total Stock Market ER of 0.09?

Children's Investment Accounts and Savings Rate/Overall Portfolio Asset Allocation

For the purposes of financial independence, is it recommended to consider custodial/children's accounts (529s, UTMA, etc.) as part of your (adult) annual saving rate, since that money is not for you?

How about when rebalancing a portfolio and considering asset allocation?

Thanks in advance!

Draws for a 529 over other types of vehicles

Hi Bogleheads! I have a newborn and originally planned to contribute two years worth of annual contributions before Jan. 1, then set it and forget it until Dec. 2025. I live in AZ, and we have the option to claim a tax deduction on 529 contributions to any state plan, which is nice. As I look at various state plans and those with no state affiliation (like the Vanguard 529), I have come up with some important considerations: 1. Considering that I just want the money to sit in low-cost broad market funds, I'm struggling to understand the benefit of the higher expense ratios of 529s with these types of funds relative to, say, a custodial taxable brokerage account or something analogous. I'm not even looking at target date funds. Using even ju...

Re: HSA transfer: Health Equity to Fidelity

Hello,

I realize this thread is a bit old so I hope this is seen. I was wondering, after speaking to HE, they stated that a partial transfer of the cash portion (leaving funds in invested portion) only freezes the cash portion (in this case, just the $25 minimum). Per HE, the invested portion is still in the market doing its thing.

Does this coincide with what others have experienced? It seems unclear from the thread if the *entire* account is frozen and the invested portion is still exposed/not exposed to the market during the freeze.

I was also wondering if anyone decided to cash out their invested portion and transfer that as well, and how that went, tax penalty-wise.

Thank you in advance.

Oh wow-- I had no idea that in-service distributions (to a more favorable option) were possible. My current HSA is also through Health Equity, and I have a separate Fidelity account with 401Ks from former employers. I will look into quarterly transfers. Thank you so much for mentioning this. Here is a good thread specifically about HE HSA transfers to Fidelity: https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=351386 Good luck and PM me if you have any questions (or post here) Thank you! After reading that thread, it appears that only money in the cash part of the account (and not the invested portion) is eligible for partial transfer (unless invested assets are cashed out). Hello, I am expecting my first child in November; I expect to add her to my HDHP and double my maximum annual contribution amount starting in 2024. I have some questions: 1. I primarily use my HSA as a tax-sheltered investment vehicle. With a second person (a minor) added to it, assuming it's not used for medical funds now at all, what happens to the account when she is a adult/in the future? Is it under both our names or still mine? 2. If all the funds are invested (currently: 100% in VTPSX-- note, my company does not offer anything lower cost than this and it diversifies my portfolio), how exactly would I use them to retroactively pay for medical bills in the future using saved receipts and would there be a penalty since they'd need to be...

I lump my cash (which is not much) in with my bonds for asset allocation purposes.

At the other end of the spectrum, I've also seen statements here like "I'm 100% stocks except for my $500,000 cash emergency fund which accounts for 70% of my net worth, but I don't include that in my AA".

Yes! This was precisely my conundrum with considering inclusion (though I’m not that rich, ha).

The Consideration of Cash/Liquid Assets in Overall Portfolio Management

Hello! I have an embarrassingly simple question that is causing confusion, and would appreciate insights from fellow Bogleheads. I am rebalancing my portfolio and have read quite a bit on it. For all intents and purposes, the "Portfolio" seems to consist of stocks and bonds, and not necessarily savings/cash/liquid assets. Is this my interpretation or is this accurate? So then...what about the cash savings? Of course, I understand that investment horizon, age, and personal goals impact ratios. But, in the following instance, can I assume a "recommended" 60:40 ratio refers only to stocks:bonds and safely ignores whatever emergency savings/short-medium term savings a person has? This seems odd to me, because some people hol...

Tax Treatment of Brokerage Account Interest Over Time, Etc.

Hello, I have ~ $90K sitting in savings and I am preparing to transfer about $70K to a taxable brokerage account and invest in VTSAX or something similar. A quick background, all my tax-deferred accounts are maxed out annually (401K, backdoor Roth IRA, HSA) and some of the aforementioned savings will be set aside to fund a 2023 backdoor Roth and a I-bond, as I also did last year. Emergency account has already been established separately, and I will be taking advantage of CD rates with a different savings account and a short term CD or some laddering, also. And, I will be renting for the foreseeable future (HCOL area) *but* have been lightly considering inexpensive investment properties elsewhere, which wouldn’t come to fruition for at least...

HSA Contribution Technical Question

I'm reviewing my W2 and noticed that my 2022 annual HSA contribution only amounted to $3509.75. This is exactly 1 paycheck deduction short, and upon further analysis, it appears the Jan. 7 paycheck is what is missing the HSA contribution/deduction. We generally are paid 26 times a year. The Jan 7, 2022 check pay period was Dec. 19, 2021 - Jan. 1, 2022. Why was an HSA contribution not made on the Jan. 7, 2022 pay date? The only working theory I have is because the pay period straddled both years. I used the benefits enrollment calculator provided by the company to allot 3650/26 = 140.39 for the 2022 year, and now I feel stupid for trusting that that would actually occur. And lesson learned to comb over every pay check, especially as the year...

Re: Which fund for 401K out of small selection; annuity?

Looks like you intend to be in accumulation phase for a while. I would go all in on the FXVLT as the best option, up to the level that earns the offered employer match. If you have extra investable funds, buy an after tax traditional IRA every January at Schwab or Vanguard, and convert it into a Roth IRA a week later. Currently, you can add $6000 every year by doing this. Once it's rolled over, you can invest it as you wish in any assortment of low cost funds. Boomers who are 30 years your senior are only now realizing that Roth may have been the better option to avoid future tax rates applied to distributions, and this will give you a foot in both camps. If, after the mini back door Roth, you still have funds to devote to your retirement ...

Re: Invest $160K or Dump Into CD?

CDs are a taxable investment account. The interest is taxable income payable at ordinary income tax rates. If you also want to consider opening a taxable brokerage account that hold stock and bond mutual funds the possible taxation is: 1. Dividends from bond funds are essentially interest and taxed at ordinary income tax rates. 2. Dividends from stock funds are mostly qualified dividends and taxed at the lesser rate of qualified dividends and long term capital gains. 3. There are only taxable capital gains on stock or bond funds in a taxable account when you sell something for more than you paid for it. You can postpone taxes on gains in your investments as long as you like and if the assets are passed on to heirs the basis is stepped up a...

Re: Invest $160K or Dump Into CD?

Interest paid on CDs is taxed as ordinary income. Distributions from index funds are taxed. Dividends are taxed as ordinary income , distributed capital gains (if any) are taxed at lower capital gains rates. Stock Index funds can be very tax-efficient, with no distributions of capital gains. If you want to use a taxable brokerage account it's probably best to use only very tax-efficient stock index funds. The exception would be if in a very high tax bracket a municipal bond fund might be useful. The part I put in italics is not always true. Qualified Dividends are taxed at the same lower rate as capital gains. Generally, most of the dividends from a stock index fund will be qualified. The dividends from a bond fund would be non qualified a...

Since you said you have already $300k separately in VTSAX / FSKAX, and this amount is only $30k, I suggest you invest that entire money in fixed income investments. That would be the Guaranteed fund and the Inflation Protected Securities fund I recommended previously, even without knowing the ERs. You need some fixed income in your portfolio, and this suggestion would take you from 100:0 to 90:10. Fixed income instruments are also best held in a 401(k) plan. Of course, if you do want 100:0, then the FXVLT is the obvious choice, even with the combined 0.35% expense ratio (0.1% actual fund fees + 0.25% mortality charges). Still the cheapest all-stock fund. Fiidelity VIP index - googled this and it looks like it is associated with annuitiws. I wouldn’t put a taxed deferred annuity within an vehicle that is already tax deferred. Just curious. It's the cheapest fund in the plan, and presumably once the OP retires the entire balance can be rolled out to an IRA. Why does it matter if there is annuity wrapper within the tax-deferred plan? Is the concern that there will be exit fees when the OP retires or terminates employment and tries to move to an IRA? According to this chart, this fund is doing an excellent job of tracking the index https://fundresearch.fidelity.com/annuities/summary/FXVLT It is just that I can’t give a reason for tax deferred within tax deferred.. Which fund for 401K out of small selection; annuity?

Update: Added tickers and ERs. Thank you for the advice thus far! The account is a proper 401k but I do work for a 501 (c)(3); I don't really understand annuities and how they will impact me at retirement or even beforehand, the way I do with mutual funds/ETFs. I am anti-insurance products in general and find the one that is of interest here—FXVLT— confusing, as it follows the S&P 500 index and seems to behave like a mutual fund. I'd like to know the pros and cons before I move forward. I am 39. The rest of my portfolio (~300K) is in VTSAX/FSKAX. Thank you in advance for any additional guidance. Hello, I have a 401K with my employer that currently has about $30,000 in it. I max it out annually (I haven't worked here long but plan to sta...

Hello All, I could use some encouragement taking a new step. A bunch of CDs just matured and I now have about $160K in combined mature CDs and backup savings. I’d like to FINALLY open a taxable investment account. I’ve only been pondering it for five years. I know earnings on taxable investment accounts are based on income taxes. I’m just completely unsure still how I’ll be taxed relative to if I just dump the money into more CDs because of capital gains. I don’t own property or have any other means of accumulating capital gains. I don’t want to be needlessly conservative and just go the CD route again. Assume Roth IRA and 401K are maxed out. Assume primary savings and emergency account are sound. And, I (obviously) prefer low cost index fu...

Rollover Into 403b or 457b?

Hello All, 1. My ex-employer has decided to hike up the management fees on its old 401K ($100K balance) with Vanguard April 1st. I'd be paying at least 4 times the amount I pay now in fees. 2. My newest ex-employer's 403b plan ($70K balance) has high fees and is eligible for rollover as of tomorrow. I have decided to roll these balances over to one of my Fidelity UC Retirement plans, which offer the same funds as VG and much lower management fees. Should I roll the above into the Fidelity 457b or the 403b? Both options are permissible. Future goals: FIRE. Since both plans require RMDs, it appears the 457b, with its penalty-free distributions before 59.5 years old, is the winner. I've done my reading but there are always blindspots. Am I mis...
