Re: NE Ohio (Cleveland Area) Master Thread

NE Ohio--Cleveland area Bogleheads---anybody out there? I just stumbled upon this site after months (years?) away from it. I've been hunkering down in my home bunker throughout the pandemic, and I'm still reluctant to venture out in public.

Boglehead principles have helped my retirement savings grow abundantly ever since the Great Recession [political comment removed by moderator oldcomputerguy].

Greetings and best wishes to all....

Re: NE Ohio (Cleveland Area) Master Thread

Greetings, all Bogleheads,
I'm sorry that we're not meeting face-to-face, but I think it's wise. My wife and I do everything we can to avoid going out in public. I think that will be our practice for some time to come. It's the safest course of action, I'm convinced.
Best wishes to all,

Re: NE Ohio (Cleveland Area) Master Thread

Great turnout for today's meeting. Lots of faces that I haven't seen before. But I missed several meetings in 2019, so that may have something to do with that. Al's presentation was rich and provocative. Thanks! I can already foresee that I'll probably miss the March meeting, due to a trip to Missouri and Kansas to visit family.

All the best in 2020,

At this point, July 13 works for me. I'm afraid I have nothing up my sleeve that I could present. However, by then my wife and I had better have firm Medicare plans made, to begin coverage on August 1. At this point, it's impossible to tell how that will turn out.

Oh, yes, plenty of females. We're a fairly diverse group. Quite a few people who are retired, but at the same time there are folks in their 30s who have decades to go before retirement. Lots of different work histories present. The differences in personal perspectives on investing, saving for retirement, etc., is very helpful to hear.

I've been slow to collect my thoughts for my presentation on behavioral economics/finance tomorrow, but here's one thing that's easy to share, the Bogleheads Wiki entry on behavioral economics: https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Behavioral_pitfalls. I think will start with this tomorrow. We could easily just talk about this and fill the time, but there is a super-abundance of other stuff available on the subject, and I'll skim through an outline rapidly.

Re: Investing in Vanguard through TIAA-CREF

I'm reeling from having glanced at the three NYTimes articles on TIAA mentioned earlier in this thread. I was unaware of them. I'm in my 38th year of college teaching, and I have had a T-C retirement savings account almost from the beginning. I'm also a Boglehead, and I've tried to persuade faculty and staff at my university to take an interest in index investing. I am especially frustrated that T-C by now offers several index funds that are not on the menu of our T-C retirement savings options. However, I've never been able to persuade anyone on faculty or staff to take an interest in index funds. Years ago I learned that I could roll over the money in my T-C Supplemental Retirement Annuity to Vanguard, which I have been doing for the bett...

This is a tough one. We have always met in a location that is more or less 'central.' For example, to get to North Royalton I drive about 45 minutes from Lorain County. How long do eastsiders have to drive to get to North Royalton?

Dear NE Ohio Bogleheads, Karen and Jim are traveling, so they will not be at our meeting tomorrow (August 12). Chris Bruns was going to lead a discussion on Medicare and other retirement issues, but he has to be out of town and will not be at the meeting either. I was one of the ones interested in the Medicare topic, because I hope to be on Medicare someday, but I'm not retired yet, and I'm in need of instruction and wisdom. Those of you who have waded through Medicare choices and challenges, please come ready to share your insights and stories! Here are some conversation starters on Medicare and retirement generally: 1. What advice can anyone give about choosing a Medicare Advantage Plan? And/or a Medicare Part D Drug Plan? 2. For those on...

Re: Rolling 403(b) into IRA?

Local rules will determine your options. I'm at a university, and we use TIAA-CREF exclusively. Besides our standard "retirement annuity," we have also had forever access to an optional "supplemental retirement annuity." It was a blessing when I discovered (at age 59.5?) that while I cannot touch the RA until I retire, I CAN rollover the SRA to my own IRA (with Vanguard). For convenience, I keep having 8% of each pay check put into the SRA, and then, once a year, I roll over 100% of the balance in the account to my Vanguard IRA. This has worked out very well for me. It was totally by accident that a HR person, or a visiting T-C representative, clued me in about our particular rules that allow this. Find out what your loc...

Could someone simply post the pdf itself? I'm supposedly registered with Callan, but when I try to login using my existing login ID and password, it won't accept them. When I try to change my password, it claims it doesn't recognize my email, saying it is not on file. I would be happy to start from scratch again and register, but I see no way to do that. I'm stuck.

If someone could simply post the pdf, that's all I really want.

Re: Filing for Spousal Social Security

My impression is that you understand how "file and suspend" works. Also, my impression is that you have been given bad advice by Social Security employees. I have no personal experience of that, but I hear that it happens. I'm afraid you made another typo: "My spouse reaches FRA on 11/11/1950." I think you meant to say that your spouse's birthdate is 11/11/1950, and therefore her FRA is coming this November, on 11/11/2016. Right? There are about a gazillion websites that talk about the recent change in rules for "file and suspend." Just Google for that, and you'll find lots to read. My reading of these websites tells me that since you are already past your FRA, you are eligible to "file and suspend," ...

Re: Filing for Spousal Social Security

Congress changed the rules about "file and suspend" last fall, and it appears you are aware of that. But this is confusing: "I reached FRA on 10/4/2016." ?? IF you reached FRA in October **2015**, I think you can still file and suspend, if you do it before May 1 of this year. If you WILL reach FRA in October **2016**, you are out of luck. However, at some point after FRA, either you or your spouse could still apply for a "restricted claim for spousal benefit," 50% of your spouse's SS benefit, but the spouse would already have needed to file for his/her SS benefit. I've been studying this stuff myself, since I will turn 66 in November, and I'm wondering about having my wife, who will be 65 in September, go ahead...

Since I am nowhere near ready to file a tax return for 2015, I have not yet pulled the trigger on this. But when I did this research a year ago, I received persuasive guidance that in my 2015 federal return, I should be able to deduct the points that I have not yet deducted for the mortgage loans taken out in 2007 and 2009. I forget who all sounded off on this, but I'm sure it's buried in my records. When I file this spring, I intend to follow this course of action.
