Does your plan bar you from making contributions while the loan is in place? Or for a set period of time after taking the loan? First priority should be to restart 401(k) contributions to the match as you are giving away free money.

Both VTSAX and VTIAX are very suitable, tax efficient investments for a taxable account. If suitable for someone in your tax bracket, VWIUX is another option.

If you cannot pay the taxes for Roth conversion from taxable moneys you should not be doing Roth conversions.

I have no idea why investing money in taxable makes you believe you have to reduce your equity allocation. VTSAX is a fine tax efficient investment in a taxable account, as is VTIAX. Keep your overall AA the same by rebalancing in tax advantaged.

Re: Salary Info double standard?

It is pretty simple really, let's say the company is trying to fill a certain position at a Hay Grade of XYZ and the range for that position is $80K to $120K with a midpoint of $100K. Let's say you personally are looking to start with them at $110K. It is pretty clear that if they hired you, they would have to either convince you to come in below what you want, or bring you in above the midpoint which would mean inflationary pay increases at best until you could be promoted. Neither makes for a happy employee. Presumably the position already has a pay grade assigned to it so that is not going to change. They are trying not to waste your time and theirs. When I was a hiring manager I had the headhunter take care of this prescreening item, it...

Re: Own individual stocks? Advisor recommends 20% in blue ch

Why should individual stocks appreciate more? The one thing we do know is that a small group of individual stocks is much riskier than an index fund. But that risk is not compensated by an increase in expected return. This is the fundamental argument against individual stocks. This is the fundamental problem with having an advisor. Unless you know more than the advisor, you cannot assess whether what he says is true. And if you do know more, you don't need him. The other thing we know is that all small groups of individual stocks taken as a whole will perform in line with the market. Which is why there is no increase in expected return. Sure some folks will get lucky and pick the next MSFT or AAPL. And some will pick the next ENE or WCOM o...

And that is utter nonsense. You either own enough individual stocks that you are essentially a closet index fund (say 50-60) and you would parallel VTSAX with some year to year tracking error due to small sample size, or you have a concentrated bet (say 10-20 names) and you have an expected return equal to that of the market with far more risk - may do better, may do worse than the market but you are not being compensated for the risk you are taking on.

At least the advisor spelled "principal" correctly which is better than most of the folks around here who worry about invading their principle.

In my opinion, the only reason to own individual stocks is to save the expense ratio. Now that VTSAX is at 0.05%, that argument gets very weak. I'll take the improved diversification of owning 3744 different stocks over saving 5 bps on a poorly diversified portfolio of 15-20 stocks.

Is he really saying that dividend paying blue chips held up well in 2008-2009? Last I checked the only thing that did not get clobbered were long Treasuries.

Rather it is a withdrawal except in the eyes of the IRS. Your investments are sold to come up with the funds for the "loan"

What astonished me - they had originally invested ca. $250K and portfolio had grown over many years to ca. $500K - so I thought there would be a lot of cap gains to pay when we liquidated. Amazingly, there were only $40K in cap gains. Why? Because the active funds ran 80-120% turnover and distributed their cap gains each and every year. Trevor - when you meet with the advisor today at a minimum get your basis, current value(s), surrender fee schedule, guaranteed interest rate on the fixed interest option (if any). Ideally get a copy of the contract.
