Traegers are pretty popular right now (would probably have to go used to get to <$750).
I'd personally get a second hand Weber Performer with a stainless table.

Re: All money market funds by 7-day yield
Nice job! I currently have most of my cash in FZDXX in my CMA acct. MY 2 Roth IRA's I set the sweep to FDRXX. Been wondering if I should change these to Treasury only MM's. Not sure which Fidelity options I would have to do this. Your sheet doesn't seem to clarify which are treasury only... or I don't know enough to decipher. FDLXX is the treasury only option at Fidelity. I just moved from FZDXX-->FDLXX myself. Thanks! I see 7 day yield is 4.16%. Not too much lower than the 4.46 on FZDXX or 4.28 on FDRXX. and no minimum. I might be switching some, but not really all that sure i should be concerned. FDLXX 7 day yield is 4.27. https://institutional.fidelity.com/app/funds-and-products/415/fidelity-treasury-only-money-market-fund-fdlxx.html FZ...

A minor who may be claimed as a dependent must file a return if their income exceeds their standard deduction ($12,950 for tax year 2022). • A minor who earns less than $12,950 will not owe taxes but may choose to file a return to receive a refund of withheld earnings. • A child who earns $1,150 or more (tax year 2022) in "unearned income,” such as dividends or interest, needs to file a tax return. • A minor who earns tips or makes more than $400 (tax year 2022) in self-employment income will have to pay Social Security or Medicare taxes, regardless of their total earnings. I contemplated a similar move (Vanguard 529 --> Fidelity). The transfer requires the 529 to be out of the market for however long it takes. I decided there wasn't a big enough difference to make it worth it.

I didn't know that about All-Clad and the dishwasher. I have noticed a sort of etching on one of the pans over the years. I'll be handwashing from now on.
Hadn't heard of Made-In cookware - that handle looks way better than the All-Clad design.

Not sure about rocking his and hers Foresters. You'll enjoy that two-seater even more once the kid arrives. I'd just keep what you have. The current Forester is the kid car. The two-seater is for fun (weekend escapes, date nights, running errands...for just a small bit of "you time").
Even with just one kid, the hands down best family car is a minivan. The height and sliding doors make dealing with child seats so much more pleasant. Room for hauling all the kid stuff, other kids, dog, etc. Cup holders all over the place. DVD player. I'll admit it, I cherished my minivan when the kids were little.

Re: VXUS [Why invest in Vanguard Total International Stock?]
International as a value play has helped me stick with a global market cap weighted strategy (I'm increasingly tempted to tilt to SCV). From one of Rick's recent podcasts: "The P/E, price to earnings ratio, this is based on September 30th data of the Total U.S. Stock Market Fund is about, was about, 17 times earnings. It was only 10 times earnings in the Vanguard Total International. The price to book in the US market was about three times book. It was half that in the international fund, the Total International, and the earnings growth rate in the US was around 20 percent it was about half that internationally . So I always look at the international market and say if I ever wanted to buy a value index without buying a value index all ...

Re: Out of market during rollover - how to compensate?
I rolled a SEP-IRA over to my 401k (Vanguard-->Schwab). Market went up 4% and a check was lost in transit. Vanguard eventually issued another check after a bunch of phone calls. The first check did show up weeks after the second check was processed which required another batch of phone calls to cancel (it was fun to see my balance at Schwab double overnight though).
Options:
Leave it where it is (not an option for the OP).
Roll over to an IRA with the current administrator and then do an in kind transfer somewhere else.
Ask if overnight delivery is an option (the process typically requires that a check be mailed).

Re: Vanguard 529 short term reserves fund
Actionable update:
I'm planning on switching from the target enrollment fund (in my case 2024/2025) to the conservative growth fund (fixed 25% stocks 75% bonds) and setting aside some extra cash to fund college in a higher yielding instrument outside of the 529. While I agree with the target enrollment de-risking philosophy, that Nevada short term reserves fund isn't an ideal form of cash. Seem reasonable?
I perused a few other age based plans out there and the Fidelity New Hampshire offering was a bit more to my liking in terms of short term reserves. Switching isn't in the cards though (requires being out of the market) and isn't worth it in my opinion.

Vanguard 529 short term reserves fund
Regarding the Vanguard Target Enrollment funds: I'm curious if anyone has insight into why Vanguard uses Nevada Short Term Reserves Fund for the 529 plans instead of a typical money market fund? The Nevada Short Term Reserves fund* seems to be a stable value fund of sorts and is a bit of a stinker (current 30 day SEC yield is 1.81%). It makes up an increasingly large portion of the portfolio, ultimately reaching 60% at commencement. *Through investments in Vanguard Short-Term Reserves Account, the Portfolios indirectly invest in funding agreements issued by one or more insurance companies, synthetic investment contracts (SICs), and shares of Vanguard Federal Money Market Fund. Funding agreements and SICs are interest-bearing contracts that ...

My current HSA is also administered by WEX (formerly named Discovery Benefits). No complaints really.
As mentioned above, I'll be moving it over to my Fidelity HSA (either incrementally or when I'm done working) to avoid ongoing fees.

I chose the Vanguard age based plan about 15 years ago - now called target enrollment plans.Ghosh_Bogled wrote: ↑Fri Jan 20, 2023 12:18 pm I have a question about funds to select in VG 529.
Started out with 75K lumpsum investment in 529 in Q4 2021. Funds - VG 500 index, VG Total Bond Market Index - 75-25 split.
The invested amount nosedived since the start, with a 15% reduction in investment value since 2021. I understand the markets have been volatile.
I'd benefit from suggestions on correct funds to choose in VG 529, from those that have chosen it as an option.
Thanks.
The age based plans aren't perfect (your 75% 500 index and 25% total bond would have performed better over that time period) but I've enjoyed not having to mess with it.

Re: Are We Over-investing in 401k's?
Good thread and something I think about often.
I'm still maxing out my 401k and plan to utilize the catch up provision when I turn 50. I also don't want to limit its growth by storing all of my bonds in the 401k. I wonder often if this is the right approach though.
My reasoning: I value the 401k as an asset protection vehicle (ERISA) being in an at risk profession. I'm justifying the extra tax I pay now with a mirrored asset allocation and the tax I'll pay later when RMDs come around as the cost of this extra layer of protection. Probably questionable logic.

Initially we split it between Vanguard total US and international (VTI and VXUS). For simplicity, we changed to Vanguard Total World Stock Index ETF (VT).
Neither of my kids are super interested yet. If they get the bug I'll let them pick whatever they want. It's a good age to make and learn from mistakes. Hopefully they stick with VT.

Depends on your psychology. You have enough that if you went 100% stocks and ended up losing half of it, you would still be in great financial shape. On the other side of things, you'll do fine putting it in a money market or CDs, though you'd be likely to pass on less to your kids. You can afford to diversify extensively even if that means lower yields. With a high income and a not-very-early retirement date you'll want to try to maximize the tax-deferred. If you want to get away from a screen *now*, you can also afford to do that. Time can be more valuable than money, depending on how you use it. If you were comfortable with 70/30 I would use that AA. Re: Stop Contributing to IRAs After 40?
Good point here. I also wonder if the same logic would prevent such a person from putting all of his or her bonds in a retirement plan (and all equities in taxable). The value of asset protection may trump tax efficiency for some.Depends on a person. I’m a physician, my TSP is fully protected from law suits. You can’t say the same about taxable.

I have to admit, I enjoy listening to Grantham. He's an engaging and eloquent person even if what he says is consistently disconcerting. No doubt he has an agenda but he sure comes off as genuine to me.
Maybe it just proves that I'm stupid or at least gullible. It's good to have things like the Bogleheads forum to put things in perspective.

Re: How often do you check your portfolios?
I used to check once a quarter tops as I had automatic investing set up at Vanguard.
Checking on the portfolio went to another level after I switched to Fidelity, started using ETFs and set up the app on my phone (addictive!).
I really want to go back to checking less often - once a week tops. Probably need to start by deleting the app.
I have to admit, I miss Vanguard (the old website), mutual funds and having things on autopilot.

I've sold some real estate recently and will have some cash to deploy. This will mean I'll likely need to utilize my entire 401(k) space for fixed income. My 401(k) options in the bonds/capital preservation section (expense ratio in parentheses): BRHYX - BlackRock High Yield Bond K (.50) JCBUX - JPMorgan Core Bond R6 (.35) VBTIX - Vanguard Total Bond Market Index I (.035) WAPSX - Western Asset Core Plus Bond IS (.42) PSVF20 - Putnam Stable Value Fund: 20bps - current net credentialing rate 2.18% I'm just considering the total bond and stable value fund. Anyone have any opinions on which way to go (all total bond, all stable value, 50/50, etc.)? I'm leaning toward 50/50 mainly because I don't know which way to go. If you don't know 50/50 is...

Re: Selling individual stock portfolio into 3-fund
Though not ideal for a Boglehead, 100 stocks may be diversified "enough" (Wellington only has 71 stocks).
If there's a large amount of embedded capital gains and no concentrated positions (more than 5-10% of the portfolio), one approach would be to just consider that group of 100 stocks your personal "mini index fund" (with a zero expense ratio).
Sell off all losers, turn off dividend reinvestment for the rest and put all new money into total market funds.
Keep an eye on your mini index fund and prune gradually. The way things are going you may be able to get rid of quite a few of those individual stocks.

Re: Cheap charcoal grill?
I'd go with the traditional 22" kettle over the Jumbo Joe. I'm sure the JJ works just fine but you won't be able to smoke the Thanksgiving turkey on that thing.
Again, I'd check the used marketplace. There is no reason to buy a new one (plus you won't have to assemble it).
There is of course a forum dedicated to the things:

Re: Cheap charcoal grill?
There are nearly always Weber kettles on craigslist and the like. They come in a variety of colors. Red ones are even considered collectible (the cherry red color is no longer available).
The original Weber Performer with a stainless steel table is a step up (new Performers are now made with plastic tables).

Re: BMW X3 "Oil Leak" Repair?
All BMWs leak oil.
Oil filter housing gasket, oil pan gasket, and the valve cover gasket are all candidates and should be replaced after awhile. It's a bummer that BMW chose the material they did for the gaskets as they turn to hard plastic with heat and time.
The cooling system also has a number of things that will fail with time and can leave you stranded. Nearly all of the coolant reservoirs crack and dump coolant, for example.
If you love the X3, just do all of the preventative maintenance (a good independent BMW mechanic will know of all the typical things that fail). If you don't love the X3, now's a good time to move on.
I love my E46 touring with a proper manual gear box and will drive it for as long as I can!
