Re: Retirement Income book recommendation?

“How to make your money last” By Jane Bryant Quinn. I agree with this one as well. It may be the best book to read first because it is pretty comprehensive. It seems to be harder to find books and research that focus on the withdrawal phase, but if you want to dive deeper, I also got some interesti...

Re: Pre-retirement and bridge to Medicare

I intentionally retired in the middle of the year so that 18 months of COBRA would get us through the rest of that year and all of the way through the next year. Hi Watty, this is interesting. Would you mind elaborating on this strategy? What's the advantage of having COBRA expire in December and s...

Re: Never Ever Rebalance Bonds into Stocks?

I am the original poster. To clarify, I guess there are two issues for me: 1. The risk (and taxation) of rebalancing a large taxable portfolio into oblivion. 2. Re: Does the three fund portfolio provide adequate protection from inflation?

Also it's important to note that his 20% allocation to REITS as posted above is unlikely to be in a REIT Index like VNQ which is available to us, but rather to a selection of individual REITS carefully picked by him and his team. Or even more likely, actual (i.e. directly held) real estate holdings...

Re: Never Ever Rebalance Bonds into Stocks?

Interesting topic and discussion. I have also been thinking about this recently, after reading Michael McClung's discussion of withdrawal strategies in "Living Off Your Money." I just worked through an example, using a hypothetical retiree who is 65, has essential expenses of 30k per year,...

Re: Does the three fund portfolio provide adequate protection from inflation?

If we enter a period of high inflation, is there a better portfolio to hold than the three fund? From David Swensen, in his book "Unconventional Success" (emphasis added): "Investors give up expected return to defend portfolios against unanticipated inflationary or deflationary econo...
