Just really getting off the ground here at 37 . Will have 1 year of expenses so I can take my time if job loss ensues. We plan to be 100 percent in total index until about 57 or so then all in on fixed income, assuming I retire at 62-65.
Our generous earnings from bitcoin have allowed us an excellent head start. We are frugal and can weather severe extended downturns. So I guess aggressive. Absolutely.

My wife and I started late so for us it's too risky NOT to be 100 percent equities for at least 25 years. We are simple people and can live thrifty. If we were to retire today SS would cover 100 percent of our expenses assuming we had a paid off house which we plan to have by retirement, and I have no objection to working part time jobs well into old age if needed. If we want to have the kind of financial life we dream of then 100 percent is the way to go for us. If we reach a substantial (to us) net worth then well rebalance into fixed income, but long downturns are just part of the risk we accept.

Ideally we are looking for a small firm or individuals who specialize in working with high net worth families ($22 million) and we are looking for a long term relationship similar to what we have with our accountants and lawyers. We have been on top of asset allocation and generally have a BH three fund portfolio allocated across taxable, tax deferred and Roth accounts so actual investment management is less important than the financial planning aspects but obviously they are very much related. Note American Funds when bought without the loads are not bad funds though a bit costly. The ERs are too high because the plan has rolled in more fees.
Giving up the employer match would be shooting yourself in the foot. This is assuming that in addition to perhaps a Roth IRA you are maxing the contribution. If you are contributing very little then avoiding it altogether might be a wash.

I am now ready to consider putting money into my 401k plan, however, I have hit the perfect storm of poor options as my employer offers John Hancock investments with mostly american and black rock funds, growth fund of America etc, with no real sp500 funds or anything like that. My employer also offers only 25 percent match up to 5 percent. So im wondering.....should I even bother with this mixed up mess of a monstrosity. ?
Edited to add all expense ratios running around 1.1 percent and im not sure I'll be with the company for 3 years to best the funds
