Re: How do I request IRS for "First Time Abatement"
A few thoughts: Late payment can cause a taxpayer to owe interest not on a penalty but on the late-paid tax itself. The IRS does not abate interest like it does certain penalties, so be sure you understand the nature of the interest that was assessed. If you have the patience, it might be the simplest to call the IRS and ask the representative if you are eligible for a first-time abatement of your 2021 penalties. They should be able to tell you and, if eligible, take care of the abatement over the phone. You cannot preserve the FTA eligibility in the way you are asking. Now that the 2021 penalty was assessed, you will need another three or more years of a clean compliance history (i.e., no penalties for 2022-2024) to qualify for another FTA...

Thank you for the suggestion. I originally looked at the detail included with my 1099-B and thought the cost basis information for the lots was the purchase price. However, when I compared that information to my transaction history for each purchase, the 9/7 lot indeed was purchased for less than the cost basis shown in the 1099-B detail. The increase in basis for the 9/7 tax lot over the purchase price is the same amount as the disallowed wash sale amount for the 9/21 sale.![]()

Re: Wash sale on Schwab 1099 after TLH liquidation of position
On my 1099-B, Schwab reports a disallowed wash sale for the tax lot of SCHB that I purchased on 9/21/22 and sold on 9/30/22. No other tax lot of SCHB, including the one I purchased on 9/7/22, shows a disallowed wash sale. Most likely things are reported correctly. eg the 9/21 shares washed onto the 9/7 shares. And the 9/7 shares' cost basis was increased, so you still got the whole loss. If you want, you can verify this by checking your transaction history for the original cost of the 9/7 shares. Thank you for the suggestion. I originally looked at the detail included with my 1099-B and thought the cost basis information for the lots was the purchase price. The end of the quarter is the usual time to distribute dividends. Have you looked at your account to see if you reinvested dividends.

Wash sale on Schwab 1099 after TLH liquidation of position
On 6/15/22, I sold my entire position in ITOT and purchased SCHB. I purchased more shares of SCHB every couple of weeks until 9/30/22, on which date I sold my entire position in SCHB with every tax lot showing a loss. I repurchased ITOT on that same date. This was at Schwab. On my 1099-B, Schwab reports a disallowed wash sale for the tax lot of SCHB that I purchased on 9/21/22 and sold on 9/30/22. No other tax lot of SCHB, including the one I purchased on 9/7/22, shows a disallowed wash sale. That doesn't seem right. To what basis would the disallowed wash sale loss be added? Has anyone run into a similar issue? My understanding was that wash sales do not occur if an entire position in a security is sold. I don't think Schwab views ITOT and...

If this is a regular brokerage account and not an IRA or other tax-favored vehicle, then be aware of Schwab's cost basis defaults and related issues for mutual funds. Essentially, from what I have read on this board, an investor needs to elect specific identification of shares before purchasing any mutual funds. Also, when selling, tax lots are not selectable online; an investor needs to call a person at Schwab to ensure the desired tax lots are selected and sold. For that reason, I chose to purchase ETFs instead of mutual funds in my regular Schwab brokerage account. I would prefer to auto-invest in mutual funds, but it isn't enough of a downside for me to either change brokerage firms or put the effort into Schwab's specific identificatio...

My career field goes on and off activation orders with some frequency, well beyond drill weekends. Another reason we decided to keep it simple and headache free. what would you do if insurance coverage was the prime consideration? Not sure I understand completely. The actual coverage difference between the HDHP and regular health insurance is not substantially different in coverage. Same network, etc. Instead of an HSA we’ll use an FSA, but increase tax-sheltered money into 529s. Not apples to apples, but I saving towards something. This is where we landed as well. Tricare...

I remember reading here on the forum what a poster said on this topic. Basically, with all of the unknowns in life, they weren’t sure which would be optimal (pre-tax vs. Roth). However, their outlook was that they would rather have the problem of too much retirement savings (i.e., such a big retirement account that RMDs take them into a higher tax bracket than in their working years) than not enough because they chose to pay taxes upfront along the way.

Chase has been fine for me. My accounts migrated over there when WAMU was absorbed by them. No monthly account fees, they have the most ATMs of any bank in America, and offer occasional free services if you ask (normally would incur a modest charge $20 or so). Sure the interest rate in the saving account is horrid but I get around that by only keep a month or so of expenses in the account. To me a bank's job is to make it easy to access and transfer your money. If I am looking for return on my money I sure as heck wouldn't use a bank for that. Same here, I was with WaMu before they ate dirt. I have liked Chase just fine or even better since then. IANYL/CPA/advisor/etc., and each situation should be considered based on its own unique facts and with professional advice if needed, but:
Normally, only the new 50% interest from buying out the friend would be treated as undergoing a change in ownership such that the base year value is redetermined as of the date of the change in ownership and assessed at current fair market value for property tax purposes. Your original 50% interest would retain the base year value you already have from when you originally acquired it and would not be treated as undergoing a change in ownership.

(please note date of OP) does anybody know why after-tax isn’t an option for civilians? Stumbled across this old thread and saw this unanswered question, so felt I needed to chime in. :D The "why" question can be answered by "because that's how congress wrote the law" or similar. But a likely rationale is simply that the vast majority of retirement plans don't allow for employee contributions beyond the typical normal deferral limit, and the TSP follows that rule generally. But at some point special tax treatment was given for combat pay, and one of the special items was the allowance of after-tax contributions. Note that combat pay is not taxable (in general), so perhaps the term "after-tax" is awkward...

Auction Date: August 8
Settlement Date: August 11

Re: How To Buy Treasury Bills on Chase Self Directed?
I'm not sure new issue auction purchases are available through J.P. Morgan (Chase) self-directed investing accounts. When I have looked, I have seen the same thing as you (i.e., secondary market only). I'll be following this thread to see what other information people might have to share with you.

Re: Experience buying treasuries on Chase?
Was that at auction or on the secondary market? I looked at my SO's account quickly the other week, and all I saw was secondary.

Re: TSP Annuities
The TSP annuity rate is 3.45% for July 2022. That appears to be the highest the rate has been in over a decade: https://www.tsp.gov/living-in-retirement/historical-annuity-rates/ I'd be interested to hear any thoughts on or experiences with the TSP annuity option. I have heard that if you want an annuity the TSP prices are fair. I do think they are relatively less popular because the other two “legs” of federal retirement (SS and FERS) are already annuity-like so many people like having both a base income and a more flexible savings they control (and can possibly pass on). Yes, the cost is supposed to be very competitive versus other annuity options. Just don't understand why there would be a need for an annuity if someone will be collecti...

Re: Schwab - Lot Details for tax loss harvesting
I am checking my Schwab accounts for tax loss harvesting. I have more than 50 positions (from pre-BH life!). By clicking an individual holding, I can see individual lots with losses/gains; but I can not see it in one view for the whole account. Obviously, all that detail is in Schwab computers. Even their service rep has the same access as me, and can not access it in one go!!!! Ideally, I would have liked to download lot details. Or, at least, have their servie rep print and email the details to me. Does anyone know a faster solution? Are all brokers like this? How do you view lot details with less efort? When viewing Schwab's "lots screen" on my PC, there are both a download/export and print icon to perform those functions. Sch...

Re: Auto-roll Tbill experience at Schwab
Nate...........thanks for posting your actual experience. I believe that is what one of the reps warned me about when I tried to sign up for the autoroll. Not sure if he knew at the time that I have a margin account so I may have to call back and clarify. With the current manual roll process, I get notice of the maturing the week before. I then have until Friday of that wk (before maturity) or very early the next Monday AM to place the next order . The maturing funds show up Thurs and the new Treasuries are bought that day or the next day so no 1 wk gap. Bumping this thread in case anyone has more recent experience. Based on the above, it looks like I will go with manual rollover instead of using the auto-roll feature. I don't want funds t...

Re: Quick tax question
To clarify, capital assets held for more than 1 year before sale will generate long-term gains or losses. Some might look at this as at least 1 year and 1 day, but holding for more than a year and a day is not required.

Perhaps a land contract, but that comes with its own considerations.
