Re: Should I start social security at 62 to invest it?

I also think some are way too negative on individual stocks. A big part of it is keeping the brain alert in retirement. From March 12 of 2020 to March 31 I made 74 stock purchases of 40 different stocks.Much of it was buying past big winners that were way down but some was new stocks. That kept me ...

Re: In a really down market does it make sense to do larger 401k conversion?

Thanks for all the great thoughts! In reality I was market timing. I've been doing 401k to Roth conversions for 3 years now after seeing a financial planner. I can only do the conversions twice a year. Why not do them when the market is low? If I have to pick a day why not when the market is down bi...

How to quote someone in a reply?

An ignorant message and showing my computer skills.
I looked at the FAQ with no luck and tried a search.
How do I quote someone in replying? - I want their part color filled.
Also - it looks like there is a way to tell when you have been quoted? How does that work?
Thank You

Re: Should I start social security at 62 to invest it?

Well - I have read over all the extra replies. Thanks again. If there were no tax consequences for sure I would take SS at 62 and not even blink an eye at the risks. But it looks like I should probably see a fiduciary for a 2nd time and evaluate how much 401k to Roth conversion to do prior to SS. Fo...

Re: In a really down market does it make sense to do larger 401k conversion?

Hello lakpr or anyone else who wants to chime in Let's suppose it actually is in ones best interest (or your kids) to do 401 to Roth conversions. The one fiduciary planner I saw in my life 3 years ago highly recommended it as did several people in another thread. I have done preliminary estimates of...

In a really down market does it make sense to do larger 401k conversion?

I wanted to title this " In a really down market does it makes sense to fill your tax bracket and the next bracket for a 401k conversion?" but didn't have space. This came from another thread that I started. On March 12, 2020 I did a large 401k conversion. I then estimated this years taxes...

Re: Advice from retirees: do you need a project or do you 'play it by ear'?

No one has discussed physical activity. I'm pretty sure all studies show it's good for physical and mental health. At 61 I climb every other day and often mountain bike on rest days. I'm also perfecting my kayak roll for longer rainy periods. Climbing is a sport anyone not overweight can enjoy start...

Re: Should I start social security at 62 to invest it?

Again - thanks for all the seasoned advice. It is odd - not being on this forum by doing my 401k conversions to Roth it felt like I was on an island. I only knew one other person doing the conversions and no other older person I talked to (even those with money) were considering it. It seemed a no-b...

Re: Should I start social security at 62 to invest it?

Thanks for all the great replies! New to the forum so it didn't jump out to me as to how to search. I did look at all of the suggestions including the open source social security calculator. Right now based on the input I'm leaning towards delaying social security a little longer if taxes stay low a...

Should I start social security at 62 to invest it?

I am strongly considering whether to start social security at 62 and invest the money in stocks. My wife and I are both 61. I have been retired for a year and she is retiring in 2 weeks. We do not need the money to live on. To explain my financial philosophy my whole career I saved a high salary % i...
