You will never find a bad word against Weber. Your main decision is the means of cooking. If you want the highest heat, and lowest price, but with a smidgen more work involved, get a charcoal kettle and a charcoal “chimney”. Charcoal also has an inherent flavor that is hard to beag. If you want ease of use, look at gas/propane or electric. A good gas/propane can get hotter than electric…but in the cold it loses performance. After you decide on that, how much you pay within the Weber range is mostly about size and nice to have features like side tables and stuff. Side tables are extremely handy for prep, storing finished food, tools and accessories. That said, you could also buy a standalone table. ** For the non-grilling outdoor cooking par...

Not all non-iron fabrics are the same and some feel fabulius. Kamakura “easy care” / “traveler” shirt are really nice.
Anyway, if you dislike ironing, considering steaming. Shirt hangs off a rack and you just wave a steamer around. More palatable chore.

FWIW, very common overseas. Where I come from you would never buy a house (or any property) without hiring a conveyancing lawyer. It seems (mercifully?) paradoxical that lawyers in the most litigious country on the planet have not spread their tentacles into this area. Ill add my anecdotes for perspective, even though doesnt help the OP directly. In one place a lawyer is mandatory, whether agents are involved or not. (Its also known as the most lucrative law practice, since tort law is not so common here). Single law firm paid by buyer does escrow and facilitates the transaction for both parties. I bought directly from a friend and the biggest cost was hiring lawyer to essentially process the papers. In another place, buying agents are not...

A good book on the art and science of photography (and the best use of lighting) will help most people more than a camera upgrade. Of course it's not as fun to read and study as it is to unwrap new toys.
The thing about modern cameras is that most work well in bright, normal conditions. When conditions are suboptimal is when the advantages show. Less ambient light start to depend on faster lens, larger sensors, better processors to compute the scene, etc.

Good pizza in Rome is more than a quick eat, its really really really good. Even if its not Naples.
Pizzarium, Panificio Bonci, Ai Marmi, Ostiense, and more are all worth planning around. Some are grab and go, some are sit down, some are dinner-only.
Rome does a lot of zucchini flowers (fiori di zucca) including on pizzas. Its a really visually beautiful ingredient and tastes great too.

Same here. Worst I’ve seen on the filter is just a thin film. Just use a old soft toothbrush under a stream of water to clean it once a quarter (if even). I scrape dishes prior loaded as per instructions but definitely bits of food still remain on the dish which is gone and also not in filter after the cycle. I suppose if you leave a meatball in, it will show up in the filter. :happy Once my machine left dishes really sloppy. Discovered that the nozzles from the arms were clogged with small bits of food like tiny egg shell fragments and chili pepper seeds. Its insidious because those particles are hidden inside the arm when theres no water pressure. Only when water is present that they get pushed to the nozzle and fully or partially clog t...

Replacing an old Bosch this month with another Bosch or Miele (national showroom and service center is nearby
)
Here’s what I considered were important:
-3 racks with cutlery rack on top, which is more space efficient than a cutlery box
-adjustable height racks. allows flexibility when loading odd-shaped items
-auto door-open, which helps with venting the steam and improves drying and energy use. especially necessary when we run it overnight.
specifically only Miele has a 3rd washing arm at the top. (mostly have a bottom and center arm). this should be crucial because often the top side of items on top rack dont get adequately cleaned.

Re: iPhone 14 vs. 14 Pro Max
The Pro series has much better photo capability than non-Pro, which in turn has far better capabilities than the SE.
The reason is they have more dedicated cameras modules, each with higher specs.
Plus/Max specification just designates the size. The Pro Max has same cameras as Pro, just larger display and battery.
Personally I really enjoy the 3x physical zoom on the Pro, whereas my previous iPhone only has 2x. Against SE, night mode and other shooting scenarios also improve.
The other big thing I notice on the 14 Pro vs other iPhones is the 120hz display which makes all the animations feel much more fluid.

you dont even need to do anything to inspect the pad for wear.
if its an alloy wheel, you can peek straight through the spokes and see the edge of the pad.
even with a steel wheel, pop the cover off and use a flash light for some illumination.

the noise doesnt mean the brake pads are worn. you can simply inspect the pad to see how much material is left. there are many causes of the squeak, most of them involve refitting and lubricating the components, commonly the so-called 'backing plates'.
if the pads are truly worn beyond their service life, the squeaking noise is really really loud. less a squeak and more a shout.

In my housing market the housing codes and appraisal process is highly uniform and strict. If major housing work (flooring, bathroom, etc) is not done by licensed firms, itll be written up as so and very unattractive to buyers.
So I leave that up to the pros.
Im not confident in electric so I dont do much beyond minor tinkering on small gadgets. Everything else I try to do, when I have time, as there’s certain satisfaction to it.
Car stuff I take pride in having done it out of necessity in my younger days. Too dirty and messy for me to bother now. One day though I want to get a car-in-a-box kit (Caterham) and put it together part by part.

And it also depends on the context of the outfit. If wearing a sweater or something unstructured, the flat front is fine. If wearing a sports jacket (still biz.cas.), the pleated is more visually consistent.
This may be too in the weeds - and for most people it really is. But the complete appearance signals a message, whether the wearer intends or even cares to or not, and whether the receiver fully parses why.

Hours and hours in rental cars with satellite radio and ive not once found an enjoyable station
Algorithmically Pandora does a decent job but gets too narrow and repetitive too quickly. Amazon is similar.
Short time with Google Music found it had the best radio/algo playlist for me.

Pretty soon the pleated Dockers will be back in style and those who had them in the 80s and 90s can bring them out of their closets. They have been out of style for at least 25 years so its time for a new generation to discover extra, pouffy fabric around their lower torso and thighs. I have pleats on my trousers. The dressier the trouser, the more likely they are pleated. Suit trousers? Yes. Flannel wool trousers? Yes. Cotton-blend chinos? Sometimes. (They might even be cuffed, too) Pleats are not poofy. They are no more about providing room, than ties are about keeping your shirt collar cinched. Pleats (and creases) visually reinforce the verticality of trousers. Cuffs adds weight so they hang better. Both give a sharper appearance. Here...

Jumping on here with side question, please. How legit is the recommendation for special "high efficiency HE detergent" with these newer machines? Are detergent pods reasonable option? Thanks in advance My low-confidence understanding of this is that the “efficiency” has to do with thermal efficiency, and that non HE detergents simply arent effective at the lower temperatures the machines favor. Eg they might not even fully dissolve. In my market the detergents arent marked as HE, but explicitly with the temperature you plan for the wash cycle, 30/40/50C, etc. My gripe with modern machines is the bias towards programs rather than manual controls. My Bosch literally has settings for “allergy plus” “sportswear” “delicate clothing” “...

My MO in SE Asia is often to rent moto-scooters and just buzz around exploring things on a whim. That's cuz it often doesn't have "checklist" landmark tourist destinations like old Europe does.
I also pick an activity and/or an outfitter (to see what they offer) to fill up the day. I particularly liked mountain biking in Chiang Mai, and there are ATV adventure as well. Along the coast it's scuba for me.
In the internet foodie age, it's very easy to find guided food tours. Airbnb.com offers booking for "experiences" too, not just housing. And private cooking classes is a great one too.

I feel like these are comments which reflect a very narrow field of vision. I can see how someone who lives in a metropolitan/urban area and who's vehicle is primarily used for commuting and basic errands can have this view, but there is so many more people, places and uses for vehicles than EV can address or the charging infrastructure can keep up with for decades and decades beyond 2035. The comments reflect the legislative environment and momentum. Emissions and efficiency restrictions are strangling ICE development (see CAFE and EU# standards), added with govt incentives favoring EV development, to outright bans of ICE new sales. Note it is ban of new sales, not outlaw of existing cars. Meaning it is not a wholesale overnight replaceme...

Housing group here put up 3-phase 32A 230V capability under existing lot, servicing 12 or so spots. No existing lamps or anything else was already there (to my knowledge). Capital expenditure was ~$20k. Charger are L2 units supporting 22kW but of course most cars are typically pulling 7,11, etc How many living units are there, 12 or many more? $20K isn't bad at all for 12 charger branch circuits. How are you getting 22KW from 32A outlets? Even if the chargers are 3 phase 240V, that comes out to 13KW max per spot (or 7.5KW if single phase at each spot). 13KW is plenty of power, but they must have had enough margin to add 100KW of load to your existing service without much change. A 100 KVA transformer (if needed) costs about $10K unless the...

Re: Adding EV charging to condo building
Not sure I agree with that. It will be site dependent, and is certainly cheaper when the lot is being first built instead of retrofit, but if you want to support level 2 charge stations, it is much more than just running some buried conduits under or around the parking lot. If you have more than 5 chargers or so, the distribution panel is getting into the larger sizes (400 amps or more), and the costs go way up. The transformer that feeds it will need to be larger, and could be separate or tapped off the building distribution supply. If anything is 3 phase or over 800 amps, the cost of things really begins to climb. I don't know if the power utilities have a good feel yet for what these chargers are going to do to them. They have decades o...

Re: Adding EV charging to condo building
Whether or not a building will add chargers depends whether they find it an attractive amenity. The cost is not that significant. The common way large residential buildings/communities here develop it is the joint owners contract a charging services company and pay for a 1-time infrastructure upgrade -- basically just upgrading and running the electrical lines across all the parking lot spaces. Afterwards, at any time, any of the individual space owners can choose to actually install the charging unit at their space. The units comes from that company, so they can all sync and load balance e.g. if 20 cars are charging simultaneously. Cost of charging is billed per session directly to each user pretty much at standard domestic electricity cos...

The airline experience is largely going to be the same. People may have subjective nitpicks in the premium class of service, but in economy its all the same ~31” of seating and school lunch food.
Some consideration you would want to focus on:
* have a connection in Europe (vs in US) so you dont have to re-check luggage on the way home
* give yourself ample connection time (say 2hr) to reduce the chance of a misconnect (even if you are “protected”)
* EU carriers are more stringent on carry-on luggage and there is a non-zero chance yours will be scrutinized for size and weight

There's this popular notion that European trips need to be 1mo+ long to "experience" a place. You'll need to settle in a small town, take out a lease, and volunteer labor at the local bakery to really say you've been there.
It's a nice idea, but people have real world constraints like work and school and other commitments that compete for time and money. Some people just need a sample.
We live in Europe and most of our trips are short and of the extended-weekend types, too. I appreciate its a longer and more expensive trip from across the ocean, but 7 days is better than 0 days.

Basque country. Superb food without all the fussiness complicated by 3 teenagers (booking + time commitment). Bilbao has some great architecture and public art. Then San Sebastian, and Biarritz, so you wade your feet in the ocean and simultaneously "checklist" a second country on the trip, even though they're near neighbors.
The other classic option is Tuscany and that's an easy failsafe.

I should have read the body instead of anchoring on the thread title!CloseEnough wrote: ↑Sat Mar 04, 2023 1:39 pm
Manifest destiny on steroids? Imperialism? A futuristic view? Just wondering how this became continental US. I guess in true BH spirit, not answering the question asked, but still beautiful shots, especially that last one.
More on point, one of the most memorable sunsets I can recall is from the summit of Mt. Washington with the sunset going down while the moon was coming up in the East. Not planned, and I imagine would take some serious planning to repeat, but fun to try. Creating some balance here, within the continental US!

Re: What do you do with document management at home?
Every important document i have is scanned and stored in the cloud.
Being able to access this at work, on the road, from my phone, etc, is invaluable. I wouldnt be exaggerating if i said i average once/week of accessing this stuff (to see bills, legal contracts, invoices, etc)
The physical copies are organized best i can in various folders. Spouse prefers the the old school route.

Re: Best Vacuum Cleaners
You must've skipped the post where *I* (twice), and other people, espouse using a stick cleaner for everyday use and a canister as the best tool for heavier jobs.
Another vote just came in for Miele. You can continue to choose to see what you want to see. I'm sure OP sees very well the consensus answer to his question by now.

Re: Best Vacuum Cleaners
Irrelevant. Most people don't run over their vacuums with a truck, but everybody likes a light vacuum, a light bicycle, a light car, a light tent etc. Plastic lasts about the same for all practical purposes, and if it doesn't - who cares, it's 200$ not 2000. So you give up 2 extremely clear advantages (price and weight) for a very questionable one (last more if run over by a truck). It seems to me like an inferior product. Your examples are irrelevant. I have a 6.8kg racing bicycle, and ultralight camping gear, and etc. For almost all these things, weight is the inverse of durability. Their necessary lightness is an accepted compromise as optimization for a specific performance goal. You're comparing apples to vacuums. A household applianc...

Re: Best Vacuum Cleaners
You are contradicting yourself: on one side there should be no major difference in a vacuum you buy today vs a 10 y old one, but there should a difference between 2 vacuums you buy today for 200$ difference in price. Is it possible that the expensive technology will be absorbed in the mainstream vacuum cleaners in 10 years? As it happens no further than last week I returned a ~400$ vacuum at Costco (Dyson) and exchanged for a 200$ one (Shark) which is if not better, definitely not inferior. Less complex, more reliable, lighter, and it vacuums carpets without huge effort. That's not what I said. I said there's no great technological advantages in vacuum technology that will make a future one date a good one today. What that means in practic...

Nobody has the incentive or right to disprove your personal experience. If it works for you, it works for you, and everyones happy.stoptothink wrote: ↑Wed Mar 01, 2023 10:33 am Literally never had any of these issues, with two "budget" (<$150) vacuums in ~20yrs. YMMV. I don't want to make multiple quotes but more than one poster in this thread has stated they own one (or did) yet prefer to use cheaper vacuums over their Miele; interpret that as you will.
But if the *majority* of the responses established a consensus that Miele is “worth it”, an easy interpretation is that there’s merit to that claim.

Re: Best Vacuum Cleaners
Tangibly worse in what way (forgive me, never used a high-end vacuum, but we have an over 10yr old Shark we have had no issues with)? A lot of posters in this thread have actually stated that - after having used both - they prefer more budget-friendly vacuums over a Miele, for various reasons. A higher end vacuum is only worth it to you , if its advantages over a lower-priced model are important to you . We've never had an issue with cheaper vacuums and they last us forever (I'm 41 and have owned two in my adult life) so I don't see why something more than twice the cost would be worth it to me . The hose doesnt kink and form. The cord retracts strongly each and every time. The joints/connections remain robust and airtight. Body doesnt chi...

Re: Best Vacuum Cleaners
I have never bought a Toyota, and I don't intend to, but the comparison is exaggerated. Cars are complex and expensive, vacuum cleaners are cheap and mostly reliable and easy to change . I would much rather buy 2X 200$ vacuum cleaners that 1 x 400$ one. A new vacuum is better than an old one, because I just changed one and I know. Or at least because it looks better. That equation works if the useful service of the product - its utility and functionality - were perfectly fungible. But a $200 vacuum is tangibly worse than a $400 one both the beginning of their life, and then again with a new one against the other at half of its life. Not all things in life work that way in the price vs marginal value scale. Some do. I know because ive handl...

Re: Best Vacuum Cleaners
My Miele canister was a new-old-stock 2200W unit, bought right after legislation restricted them to 1600W max. It can probably hold a bowling ball up with its suction power.
Certain things like phones and laptops you'd want the latest and greatest. Other goods, I'm happy for the "ancient" stuff.

Re: Best Vacuum Cleaners
The assumption is Toyotas last practically forever... say 1 million miles.Starfish wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 11:21 am There is absolutely no reason to get the "best" vacuum cleaner. A 200$ Sharks works very well, and holds up for 10 years when is about time to replace any vacuum cleaner. I assume nobody wants an antique vacuum cleaner around the house, so why should it last more than that?
People don't buy Toyotas because they intend to drive it 1 million miles. They buy them because that fact suggests their 50k, 100k, 200k of ownership will be troublefree.
What great future technological advances are we expecting from a manually-operated vacuum machine? My household appliances are ancient (10yr+) but I dont see why I wouldnt want them...

Re: Tesla Model 3 Performance - worth it?
MH2 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 27, 2023 3:27 am We're facing the same dilemma. When the time comes to replace the Model 3, if they're sold where you live, consider looking at either the 330d xdrive or the M340d xdrive. The B57 has as much torque as a Model 3 performance and, from what I'm reading, is surprisingly reliable.
In my market the M340d without options is around USD 100k, literally double the price of Model 3 Performance, in addition to $8/gal fueling cost. Slightly more fuel efficient than petrol, but still expense to top up!

Re: Best Vacuum Cleaners
While I do like my Miele canister vac, I must be honest and mention that I have had it repaired 3 times in 10 years. This last time required the motor to be replaced. I confess that I have forgotten to change the bag at times. But lately we’ve been using a cordless vac (Tineco) a lot. I am hoping that significant innovation continues on the cordless front. It is still far inferior to a corded unit but so much more convenient. Someone needs to focus less on lightness and stick some serious voltage into there (like power tools). The convenience I desire comes from not having to plug in, and it would be ok for it to weigh a lot. Should be hard to forget to change the bag. Theres a colored indicator on the vacuum. You should also be able to sm...
