I'm confused why everyone thinks you can't afford this. You're basically paying cash for this new house right? You have $200K in equity and $140 in cash/taxable so that covers your high end estimate. Sometimes the Bogleheads conservatism borders on maniacal.

We did Trugreen for mosquitoes last year (Wisconsin) and will do it again this year. Yes, there were a few stray mosquitoes since our neighbors didn't spray but it definitely made it possible for us to hang out in our back yard which is not always a given.

Did this when I was 30 and was gone 9 months on a leave of absence from my job. Had a great time and went back to my regular job to no ill financial effect. I even still maxed out my 401k both years (trip spanned 2007 - 2008). Go and have a great time. You'll be fine.
