I used H&R Block's free version available through IRS E-file website for 2017 taxes. I was able to submit federal and state (CA) for free -- already received my direct deposit refunds! New York had a free tax file on their site 2 years ago. It's gone now, probably due to paid providers donations. That, or it was easier to allow commercial providers to develop the SW than do it themselves fully. I really wanted to use the IRS fillable forms, but NY's rule that you must efile state...
