Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

The Tastytrade website says they only support LIFO and FIFO (there is no mention of SpecID, so it appears that is not an option). Does this mean that I will lose my lot-level cost basis history if I ACATS transfer my existing Vanguard holdings to Tastytrade? And/or I will lose my cost basis history in the future when I transfer out of Tastytrade?

The reason for this concern is I recall back when I transferred assets to Fidelity, they said it was important that the cost basis selection be set at the time of transfer to whatever you want to be at Fidelity. But if Tastytrade doesn't recognize SpecID, will it get converted to LIFO / FIFO and the specific lot purchase history get forever scrubbed?

A lot of people (not all) have "side hustles" because they don't have a solid professional career or trajectory and they need the extra income. It's unlikely to catapult you from middle to upper class unless the hustle is figuring out how to start a successful business.

Re: Trading Treasuries (nominal and TIPS)

I’m confused on what I’m seeing on Fidelity’s bond trading desk. I’m looking to buy a treasury bill that matures on 8/15/23. Under depth of book, it shows several options of differing ask price, quantity, and yield.

[Ask Price / Qty(min) / Ask Yield]

98.409 / 3000 / 5.087
98.412 / 100 / 5.090
98.412 / 100 / 5.080

How can the higher priced bond have a higher yield?

How can 2 bonds with the same price have different yields?

Apologies—I didn't mean to poke fun, but I see that I kind of did. (I'd actually deleted the post before I realized someone had replied, partly because I felt bad.) Most of stoptothink's points are well taken—for the most part, I knew what I was getting into. I certainly didn't fully know, nor do I think most people when they start down the 6-10 year path of a humanities PhD, especially considering that there's no shortage of bad advice from older mentors who came up in the humanities boom. Beyond that, in most humanities fields, you don't choose where you live. Settlement Timing and Purchase of Treasuries at Fidelity

Bogleheads

I have a Treasury maturing tomorrow at Fidelity. I wish to use the proceeds to immediately purchase another Treasury on the secondary market at Fidelity. How do I approach placing this order with regard to timing?

Can I place a market order tomorrow before close of market, and if so, is there a particular order" type" that I need to specify?

Or do I need to wait until Friday (or later) for the funds to show up in my core/settlement position?

Thank you

Re: If your net worth is over $3 million, how did you do it?

You chose a specific field knowing it didn't pay particularly well, got an advanced degree that delayed your entrance into the workforce, and live in one of the highest COL areas in the country; your financial situation was largely a personal choice. I'm probably of similar age (late 30's), from LA (but got out after undergrad, thank heavens), with a STEM PhD, and don't make that much more than you do, but will likely hit $3M before the age of 50 and the LBYM principles you are making fun of (buy less house and car than peers, brown bag it, etc.) are a big part of that. You alone make more than the national median HHI just starting out in a profession with stability almost like no other, if you stay the course and LBYM it is possible that ...

Remember that what might be “optimal placement” in one year may not be the next year or at some point in the future. Tax laws and individual tax circumstances (e.g., which bracket you fall in) can change significantly, especially pre vs. post retirement. This favors not overthinking it.

ETA: some people loathe Form 1116. If you’re in this camp, it would support limiting how much international goes in taxable.

Re: Obamacare: Too many varied options. How to choose?

Can anyone explain to me: what is the difference of an HMI vs a PPO from the customer perspective? The difference is in their name. HMO is health maintenance organization. The provider generally gets paid a fee per patient, not per treatment. The incentive to the provider is to provide preventive care, in order to reduce the amount of expensive care the patient needs. From the consumer perspective, the patient is required to get all their care from within the HMO’s network. The insurance doesn’t usually acover anything outside of the provider network. PPO is preferred provider organization. It’s regular fee for service insurance, except that the coverage is better and copays are lower if the patient sees a provider inside the network. But ...

I freaking love the Bogleheads. 8-) Not sure where you got your info, but IRS Form 8815 states that the Adjusted Gross Income Limit for a MFJ return to get the tax-free exemptions is $158,850, not $128k as you stated. He stated that approximately $128,000 was the limit for the full deduction. Is that not the starting point of the phaseout range? Thanks for pointing that out, coach. MFJ gets the full exemption at $128,650 MFJ gets a partial exemption up to $158,850 These numbers are indexed for inflation, so you'll want to check for the latest figures. I did a quick calculation without tax benefit. interest rate=0.5% + 2.5%( cpi)=3% 20 years taxes=24%+3.8%+9.3%=37.1% face value: 1.03^20=1.806 > 1.507 after tax 1.507/1.025^20=0.920 >>> Canno...

Re: Best Fidelity Treasury Money Market Fund?

FDLXX https://fundresearch.fidelity.com/mutual-funds/summary/31617H300 It shows the 7-day yield as 4.21%. Why is this so much lower than Vanguard’s VUSXX at 4.7%? That's easy. Look at the expense ratios. Fidelity is .42 and Vanguard is .09, a difference of .33. That's most of the difference. The rest is explained by the assets they hold. Treasury Only does not hold repos and Vanguard does. Repos are currently paying a higher yield than most short term Treasuries. So you have to do the arithmetic to determine if the state tax exemption is worth the 11% lower yield. In most cases it is not. Thanks for the explanation. I think I’ll stick with buying individual T-Bills. I’m also wondering if dividend from SGOV is all/mostly state tax exempt. D...

I'm seeking help on which address to show on my federal tax return and what (if anything) I need to do in regards to updating my address. Here's the background... But today, I’m reading on CNBC that apparently in an attempt to reduce expenses they are “cutting back on staplers and tape”. (As an aside, LOL). For a trillion dollar company specializing in cutting edge digital services to be “reigning it in” on staplers and tape, my read on this is that things must be very dire there. So this has me wondering, should I sell, lock in the gains now, and bite the tax bullet?
