I got that "binary attachment" reject several times but it was for missing f8962. The clients forgot they used ACA and didn't even know they'd gotten a 1095a for it.

There seems to be people who never open their mail.

Re: Tax Preparation Fees

If your niece's income is under the limit.... Technically there is no specific income limit for either VITA or Tax-Aide, nor is there any age limit. The Free tax return preparation for qualifying taxpayers page says "'generally' make $64,000 or less" as a suggestion for what "low to moderate" income means. Many VITA sites do use the $64K as a limit, and people generally accept it, but if someone wanted to make a stink about it the site wouldn't have a legal leg to stand on. One would hope, however, that people with six-figure incomes aren't using those sites to save what to them is a relatively small fee, thus displacing someone for whom the fee would be significant. But both of the OP's examples (unless the pension/W-2...

Wife can get medicare on husband’s record. Part A - hospital coverage.needs to be 65 and must enroll. No cost. Part B - enroll in and Pay for this - pays for doctor’s office visit - monthly or quarterly fee to medicare. Part D - enrollment is optional but a good idea - prescription drugs - month - needs to select a provider. Monthly Payment required. Medicare supplemental covers good part of the gaps of coverage of Part B. Pay a private insurer for this. All of this may cost an individual. $400-500 a month. It certainly is not free. Many people obtain medicare by via marriage to someone who has paid into the system.. This is not new. Part D or MA drug coverage is not optional. I've seen some fedgov policies that don't, and you can be in and out of SNF several times before it's all over.

Re: What should a taxpayer expect a CPA to do?

I had a unique (at least to me) issue in 2022. A CPA friend explained it to me and provided the source in IRS regs. He could not do my return and referred me to another CPA. I thought it might be useful to have a CPA do my return thinking there might be other advice he would give. When I talked with him by phone and discussed my tax situation, he said it was doubtful he could provide any other advice. He said his expertise is usually best for business owners. Since he was going to charge $1k for something I could do myself, I did the return myself. The only time I ever paid someone other than TurboTax was for my mother's estate return. The rules for estate returns are different, and as executor, I did not want to screw up the return. So I ...

My father was well prepared with paid off house, pension, SS and $1 mil + in equities, which grew and grew during the 90s tech boom.

But he spent all of it in live-in nurses aides and on keeping my two unemployed brothers and their kids afloat.

All that was left at the end was the house.

Re: College degree worthwhile for marketing?

I strongly disagree with the myth that in order to be successful, you have to get a college degree. If that were true, then Bill Gates would be a failure. My second oldest nephew graduated from Eau Claire with a BA in Marketing and still cannot find work. Save the money and let your daughter succeed or fail. Oh cmon. Nobody is saying "you have to get a degree or you will fail!" And cherry picking isolated examples proves nothing. Generally speaking, a person's job opportunities - and ability to get better jobs - increase considerably with a degree (although as always, the devil's in the details). Further, real estate can be a very volatile job. One never knows how much they'll make in a given year (and I agree with others that th...

Quick way to efile an extension?

I'm trying to help a friend get an extension while she deals with her divorce.

She's going to have a big liability due to SSDI backpay, but she's met the safe harbor requirement through quarterlies, paying more than her 2022 liability.

But I'm surprised how worthless HR Block has been. If forces you through a whole return and doesn't have a safe harbor option. Then it wants 19.95. :x

TaxSlayer Pro pushed me through the interview then says I don't have the privilege.

Is there a quick and easy way to do this online?

On the IRS website, it says they don't require amended returns for math errors, which is essentially what this is. They do require amended returns if you make an error that affects your tax liability. This doesn't qualify for that.

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/if-you-mus ... our-return
This is a pretty substantial error, no? I would correct it for the record.

There's no hurry though. Efile acceptance just means the submission passed some of the initial error checks like SSN. An amended return could gum up the works.

I'd wait til after season to submit a 1940x.

I made full use of 401k and IRA.and invested, he just to the match in safe bond funds. So I had 10x what he had when I was laid off at 65. I kept working on and off then filed for SS at 69.5.

Does anyone have one of these accounts and got a 1099? I'm just wondering if they're using the old VALIC EIN or the Corebridge EIN.

Re: Why does tax preparation software ask about Medicare premiums?

Those premiums are deductible and when you add in medigap like plan F and part D iit can be a significant amount! Enough to justify itemizing here in Montana anyway. It is definitely a significant amount! I always thought that only the amount of total medical expenses that are deductible had to be over 7.5% of AGI? If we stopped doing tIRA conversions, we could get our AGI down to 100k. I interpret that to mean that any amount OVER 7,500 would be deductible. Our 2024 premiums for Medicare, D and F/G and dental total 8,098.56. throw in another 1,000 for some dental work this year (had none in 2023), so we're talking about 9k, or 1,500 to deduct. For a legally married couple, there are two filing options. 1. Married filing jointly (MFJ) 2. Married filing separately. (MFS) MFJ would require you to openly share all W-2s, 1099s, etc. That's why it needs to be written into the MTA. You will also be legally responsible for all information in the joint tax return. MFS can be done with less information from a soon to be ex-spouse (who maybe isn't open to sharing things). You also are not legally responsible for your spouses return. Your attorneys are correct. I agree with you on legally married couples, but my attorney is suggesting that we may still file MFJ or MJS *after* our divorce is finalized if a judge directs us to do so. Re: Pro musicians! How do I handle a high-end instrument purchase for tax purposes?

If you're a self employed musician and you are using the instrument in performance you must depreciate it or depreciation will be imputed by the IRS anyway.

I would use seven years straight line depreciation though I know a well cared-for instrument does not really depreciate in value. You cannot take a loss but you can carry a loss forward to offset future profits.

If you use any kind of accelerated depreciation like 179, bonus or MACRS then you must recapture the extra amount as ordinary income if you sell.

If you're just holding it as a personal investment then it's a capital asset and you don't depreciate it.
