If someone is self employed and gets hurt while working, could they deduct their out of pocket expenses? More specifically, I have a small farm. Part of that includes an apiary (bee farm). I got stung the other day while I was working the bees. I had a severe reaction and ended up in the ED. Could my copays and deductables be considered a business expense? I also know that one cannot double dip. So if the expenses in question were paid with pre tax dollars I understand that they wouldn't be deductable a second time.
I suppose a similar question could be if someone drives a personal vehicle for business related activities and had and accident while conducting business, would their deductables be considered a business expense?

I am not opposed to solar. I just like a little space between it and me. I also believe that there will be some better opportunities for higher leases and higher inflation indexes.

Re: purchasing land with existing solar contract
Property is located in NYS. Nothing is certain in life, but the solar project is fairly likely to go forward. They have spent the last 2 years upgrading the power lines in the area. A small 20 acre field is going in right now and this parcel is the closest to the substation, so ... I haven't seen the existing lease, however I was approached earlier this year. If the contract is from the same company it has a 2% annual increase. Of course, I would want to look at it before purchasing. I just want to figure out if there is a way of dividing the purchase into two pieces "dirt" and for the lack of a better term "annunity." Correct about the taxes, I dont want to earn 20K, pay 10K in property taxes and pay 5+ in income taxes....

purchasing land with existing solar contract
There is a parcel of land near me that is 50 acres. Twenty of them have a 40 year solar lease that has not been built yet. but will pay $20,000 per year. Slated construction is 2022. They are asking $300,000 which is 2-4x the value of the land. Taxes on the $300,000 would e 10K annually. Basically, the people are rollong the value of the land and the solar lease into one item. Is it possible to separate the land and the lease for purchase? Example pay $150,000 for th eland and $150,000 for the lease contract? The solar contracts state that they are resposnible for excess property taxes due to the build, but if one buys the two together, like they are asking the new purchaser would end up paying extra taxes.

Re: Decluttering your life (financial and otherwise)
Overall decluttering is definitely a positive, but there will always be times when it you'll end up tossing something that would be useful later. This is true however.... I've completed several major downsizings in my life. In two notable cases I was forced to get hyper-liberal in what I got rid of. To your point, I wound up tossing a couple of things I needed later on. A conduit bender and a copper tubing cutter are two that come to mind. That said, I would rather get rid of 100 things and wind up having to repurchase one of them than be stuck with 99 things that I never use. I like your philosophy. My garage is so cluttered that I can never find anything that I need, so I end up repurchasing things that I have "stored" and cann...

Re: Doctors visit/ included physicals
I would love to see congress act to fix this exploitation of the intent of the law. Yearly wellness checks should be free, and they should include at least "x" minutes of time with the doctor for which s/he cannot charge extra . Sure. Let's just raise insurance premiums to cover those x extra minutes with the doctor. I'm sure the insurance companies will do everything at cost without greasing their own pockets on this line item. Nothing is free. Even if you feel entitled to it. I wouldn't mind being charged for the few extra minutes and a reasonable bill for that time would lower premiums. However, what they end up charging for is a complete physical and another complete visit because you asked a couple questions. This practice d...

Re: Doctors visit/ included physicals
This is one of the scams being pulled by doctors/insurance companies so that they can bill you for something which the ACA requires to be provided for free. I'm a healthy person (no pre-existing conditions, no meds, nothing) but because of my age I like to get a wellness check once per year. Virtually no doctor I call will see me for my "covered" yearly wellness check without first charging me for an 'intake' visit. Of course, the intake visit does not benefit me at all - no services are rendered - so it's just a billing opportunity. The other scam bites you if you dare to ask any questions during your wellness visit. My adult daughter (also healthy) went for her wellness visit, and asked one or two questions about minor issues t...

I made some adjustments in my 401K. I diversified out of my company stock into two targeted funds. One for 2030 and the other for 2035. These now account for 30% of my 401K. The remaining 70% is still in stock mutual funds. Do I transfer out of those and into the two targeted funds with Fidelity?

Thank you all for your thoughts. I will reallocate my 401K now rather than wait. The 8% ESop won't be changed this year. My income is up in 2021 and there is no sense piling on the tax load. I have toyed with the idea of using the ESOP as my donations to church over a period of several years. That would help me avoid capital gains, but downside, I need to hold it.

How fast to readjust AA
I am in my early 50's. My current AA is 87% (80 domestic and 7 foreign) stocks, 2% bonds and 10% cash. Roughly 1M total of which 75% is in my 401K. It worked well for me last year, but I know I am playing with fire and not good FIRE. In the early days of my 401K the match came as my companies stock and that has it's ups and downs. As it hit several peaks lately, I have transferred several large chunks into a 2035 target option in my 401K. Still hold 22% (14% 401K and 8% taxable) of my total portfolio in company stock.
Do I readjust all at once or over a period of time kinda of like dollar cost averaging?

The windows are old enough that they do not have weights. They are single pane, the wood frames have seem much better days. They sweat so they get damp and have mildew on the inside. hard to open, and leak air around the sashes like crazy. Plus they offer no noise protection from the outside and I woudl like to have that.homebuyer6426 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 16, 2021 10:52 am My 1938 house still has the original windows, just with galvanized storm windows added over them in the 70s. What's your complaint with the old windows? Are they letting cold air in? Fungus on the glass? Or just hard to open?

My home is is need of replacement windows. It was built in the 1830's. Not really sure how old the current windows are. At least 100 years. The last couple I did, I pulled the old wood frames out and put new construction windows in. I used Anderson windows: Vinyl outside, wood frames, wood on the inside. I like them. Anyone here have thoughts on them or other windows? This home has been in the family since it was built. I don't plan on moving so I want a product that I will not have to replace in the next 30-40 years.

I went with a 20 year policy that I got from an indepenent agent who who shopped for me. In three years I will be 55 when the policy runs out. my youngest child will be 21 by then and hopefully out of college and on his own. We have also managed to save enough that my wife could live off of the savings, pension and SS. I figured that when my term insurance ran out, I wouldnt need as much and I get 2-3x my annual pay in insurance from my employer with the option to buy more if i need it, which i will not.
I do like the questions that others raised about how much are your acutual expenses. I think that while the 10x rule is a good starting place, we shouldn't allow insurance salesmen to use it to sell us more than we realistically need.

Basis on farm
I purchased a farm from my grandfather in 1996. He held the morgage and when he passed away in 2003, the balance of the morgage was forgiven in the will. I was forgiven roughly 1/2 of the purchase price of $45000. It was valued at $150,000 in 2004. Did I inherit the morgage balance of $22,500 or 1/2 of the farm?
I am about to sell timber off of the farm. Based on what I paid, the timber basis from 1996 is not worth calculating. However, if I inherited 1/2 interest in the existing timber when my grandfater passed away, the basis on that half might be worth calculating for tax purposes. Any thoughts?

I did not think about what the solar farm would do to taxes on the rest of my property. I will need to talk to the town about that. The company will not allow the leases to be filed with the real property office. I assume that is because they are offering different deals to other people and do not want it public. I know that they need a long lease, but 48 years is designed to be two generations of panels. I would feel more comfortable if it was one generation with a renewal option.
