Re: Refinance Mega Thread

Does anyone know if Ally also refunds the appraisal fee (like Better) that is charged at the start of the process, if the appraisal is ordered but not actually done, or if the borrower pulls out of the refi process and does not complete the refi with them?

Re: Refinance Mega Thread

Quick question regarding Better.com appraisal. When I locked my rate in the appraisal status on the website was instantaneously updated to "ordered". However, the appraisal has not yet been scheduled. If I decided to walk (there are a few reasons at this point tbh), would I be able to get my $550 d...

Re: Mega Back Door Roth and Avoiding Excess Contributions

On a related note, I had asked my HR a question about the following scenario and never really received a response (after they had mentioned that excess contributions would be returned in the form a check to the employee) - I had asked what if the excess after-tax contributions had already undergone ...

Question regarding updates to your credit report - my refinance closed middle of August and the new loan was funded on 8/20. The new loan just showed up on my credit report, however, the old loan is still showing as open, so effectively my open debt (due to mortgage) is showing as double. Is this p...

Re: Refinance Mega Thread

You do realize that this same question was asked just one page ago? Did you see the answer to it being asked then? Hi Brandon - Thanks for the pointer, I did glance at it yesterday, but I thought it was more related to the waiting for the Amex credit before starting the process again. With that sai...

Re: Refinance Mega Thread

How soon does one have to wait after the closing of a refinance to start the process for the next refinance? I just closed my last refinance in mid-August and the loan is funded. Still awaiting the refund check from the original lender. Do I need to wait for the refinance lender to show up on my cr...

Re: Retirement Portfolio Overhaul - Guidance on Proposed Revised Allocations

1. With respect to EE bonds and I bonds: what is your end goal? If it is to make sure that in 20 years you will have at least $40k per year inflation-adjusted dollars in retirement, the I-bonds meet that requirement handily. They are also more liquid through the years 2 through 20, than the EE bond...

To repeat myself, these are just optimizations around the edges of the portfolio, I cannot say they will make any difference (in fact I will almost guarantee that they will NOT make any difference), but might alleviate some pain in the maintenance of your portfolio (relieves of being forced to hold...

Target date funds begin with a 90:10 allocation between stocks and bonds, and begin the glide path when the target date is about 30 years away. With Target date 2050 fund, the glide path is about to begin this year or next. With 2065 fund, the glide path will not begin until 2035. Until then it rem...

General question about rate locks: When you lock a rate and the loan application processing begins, do you lock into a specific rate, or do you lock into the rate table that that rate was a part of? For example, if someone locks a 2.75% rate on Day 1, can they switch to a 2.875% later in the proces...

Thank you! I ended up deciding to go with the 3% rate, as I will still be dropping 1% point and will even be able to apply some of the lender credits to the prepaids/escrow. Currently, the closing is estimated to be 8/7, that estimate seems to be par for the course, based on others' experiences her...

Re: Retirement Portfolio Overhaul - Guidance on Proposed Revised Allocations

Who is the owner of the Traditional IRA? If it is you, can you roll that Traditional IRA into your workplace 401k plan? Most importantly, can you do that before July 10th at least? The reason I ask is that you can use Backdoor Roth process. In this process, you will contribute $6000 to a Non-deduct...

Request Guidance for HSA Adjustment

I have had an HSA for the past 4-5 years that is mostly a rollover from a previous HSA into a Fidelity HSA that is offered by my current employer. I have not spent a lot of time considering the portfolio composition of this when I first opened the HSA; this is also evident from my lack of oversight ...

Thank you retired@50, justsomeguy2018 and Bfwolf for your combined help, this makes sense. My main concern more than the performance was really hitting ceilings by having all funds in one 529, but I'll just pick one (leaning towards the Utah one) that has a higher ceiling. Thank you!

Re: Can I open 2 529 plans in different states with me as the owner and my son as the beneficiary on both of them?

My thinking was to (and happy to be corrected): (1) invest in different available fund mixes that have had a good track record, and (2) (in the admittedly unlikely case) if the balance plus earnings value reaches the maximum allowed limit for one of the 529 plans, divide the contributions across two...

Re: Can I open 2 529 plans in different states with me as the owner and my son as the beneficiary on both of them?

The thinking is that I would be the owner of both the accounts, and my son would be the beneficiary on both of these plans. Is this allowed? When the time comes, would I need to 'roll over' the money from one of the 529 plans into another one to consolidate distributions from only one account (for ...

Re: Can I open 2 529 plans in different states with me as the owner and my son as the beneficiary on both of them?

Thank you so much for the quick review and response! One other question - are there pros/cons to creating two separate 529s (other than the additional administrative overhead and virtual paperwork) versus honing in on just one of the state plans, and sticking with it? I was thinking of spreading (an...

Can I open 2 529 plans in different states with me as the owner and my son as the beneficiary on both of them?

As a new father, college savings is one of the things that I have been spending a lot of time thinking about lately, given the ever-increasing costs of higher education. I have started reading up on the different 529 plan options available by state, and have narrowed my choices down to Utah's my529 ...
