Re: iPhone 6s - upgrade to 11 or 12?

Purchase a used iPhone 8 off of eBay (from a reputable seller- I try to score ones that were purchased <1 year ago so they are still under Apple warranty) for somewhere in the $200-300 vicinity.

Invest what you saved and wait a while on 11 vs 12.

Re: "Here is how to tell a bull market is coming" wolf, wolf, wolf...

Many of my friends and colleagues...were severely impacted in the last one and have not recovered. Haven’t recovered in the last 10 year bull market? Is that because they sold at the bottom and didn’t get back in? Easy solution, don’t do that. Survive a recession by having enough in less volatile i...

"Here is how to tell a bull market is coming" wolf, wolf, wolf...

I've been very fortunate and somehow managed to have navigated a number of significant market shifts over the years (quite often, against the advice of financial advisors, stock brokers, etc.) without getting hurt too badly. This very recent article link is quite negative https://www.cnbc.com/2020/0...

Re: Buying High Mileage Truck to Haul Mountain Bikes

I have a hitch rack on my car... some will accommodate up to 4 however, if they are a mix of cross-country, fat tire, ... bikes than a truck might make more sense. A Toyota Tacoma would strike a nice balance in that case: reliable/cost-effective, capacity for 5 bikes and 4-door room enough to transp...

Re: Perform own oil change pros & cons?

The only time I have not changed my own oil was on the one new car I've purchased in my entire life. I always change my own air and cabin filters, shop for tires, etc. elsewhere. It was a 1st production year Honda (that I bought at the end of the model year for an excellent price when the second ite...

Re: Another mortgage refi question: 30 to 15 year?

30-year @3.5% is very good rate. I'd stick with that and have they option of paying it down faster while/when times are good.

I was <10 years in on a 30-year mortgage at 4% and refinanced to a 20-year at 3.25% not too long ago (at that time, quotes on a 30-year were running 3.56%).

Re: Personal Capital and Ally Bank

Good to know... My Ally accounts stopped syncing a little while back as well... Some of my portfolio consists of (non-ETF) Personal Capital investments and Ally banking/investing for my own trading during the past couple of years now. So much nicer of an experience since Ally recently made transfers...

Re: Do you think I should get a dedicated Chromebook for my financial accounts?

Chromebooks are far too limiting for my purposes. The more expensive Android-based models are decent but at that price, might as well by a computer with a full-blown operating system (macOS or Windows). The other advantage to a full blown operating system is that you can install commercial products ...

Re: Single stocks... would you?

It depends on the stage of life where you are (just starting out on up to nearing retirement), how comfortable you are with making your own investment decisions, how much time you have, level of patience, etc. Yes, I buy single stocks in an individual trading account and have done so since it was po...

Re: Risky Financial Decisions You’ve Made in the Past

I lent money to two former colleagues (on separate occasions) when they were purchasing their first homes. This was back in the early 2000's when lenders didn't care where downpayment funds came from nearly so much as now... it all worked out as we agreed for repayment. Purchased a home and rented b...
