Re: SALT benefits couples to remain unmarried

The SALT cap limitation may or may not be a factor. A couple would have to model their single and pro forms joint tax situations. In my “MFJ high tax state” case, the new tax law resulted in a (slightly) lower federal tax liability for 2018 than the liability would have been under the old tax law. ...

SALT benefits couples to remain unmarried

Isn’t the new deductions limit a reason for single couples to remain unmarried? Say both individuals have more than $10K in income tax. Is this essentially a $3000 question assuming the other partner would get an additional refund approximately in that amount? “The new tax law has largely eliminated...

Move $ from brokerage to 529?

A grandparent has college money invested in an SP500 index fund for his grandchild. Does it make sense to sell now, pay long term capital gains taxes at 15%, and invest the proceeds in an identical fund in a 529?

FDIC insurance covers cash in a bank up to $250K. There’s only so many bank accounts one can open. SIPC covers brokerages, so isn’t $ safer invested in securities? Ignore risk & rate of returns at the moment. Thinking if one wins the Mega!

Also to be considered is the effect of AGI on the amount of SS which becomes taxable, and ACA/Medicare premiums, if applicable.
These two are important considerations!!
