Re: Investing in small and/or local businesses

Thank you ScaledWheel. I have several questions for you because I and my wife have very similar thoughts as yours. We have barely started the thought process so I cannot tell what kind of businesses we are interested in - but I think we need to understand at least good part of it to make informed de...

Re: Investing in small and/or local businesses

Thank you very much arcticpineapplecorp for your quick response. The points which you have raised are all valid! I do invest in 60/40 portfolio but I feel that if the stock market is not doing good when I need the money then that will be a problem. Another alternative is investment in real estate bu...

Investing in small and/or local businesses

Hi,

Does anyone know if an individual can invest in small and/or local businesses? What is the mechanics? Do you have first hand experience? What are some of the gotchas? Are there any reputable forums providing information about such businesses?

Thanks,

Re: Can I still save tax for 2019?

Thank you all.
I checked the link from O2nz and we are not eligible for traditional IRA deductions at all. I had opted for PPO plan at my employer and would like to continue with it for at least 1 more year.

Can I still save tax for 2019?

Hello, I have not submitted my tax return for 2019 yet since the date has been postponed to July. However, I started making entries in turbotax and realizing that I have taxes due. This is because I have CDs, Vanguard mutual funds in a regular brokerage account and they generated returns. I was not ...

Re: Recommendations for regular saving account

Thank you o2nz.
As far as I can remember the employer had some kind of deal with the bank at the time.
I will definitely check-out the online banks which you have mentioned.

Recommendations for regular saving account

Hello, When we started working in US more than 6 years back, we (my wife & I) had opened direct deposit accounts in big banks (that's what respective employers wanted). However, they offer negligible interest rate on savings account. I would like to reconsider it. So 1) Is there any value in kee...

Re: Guidance on investing Indian money in India and reducing tax liability in US

Thank you all.

The Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) mentioned in https://www.compareremit.com/money-tran ... -transfer/ is interesting.
It seems that if LRS is relatively straight forward then getting money in US is preferable.

Guidance on investing Indian money in India and reducing tax liability in US

One can argue that this post belongs to non-US investment however I think it is valid in both the forums. Before moving to US, I was working full time in India for number of years and hence have stocks, CDs etc. in Indian banks. After moving to US, I am still maintaining them but I do not like the U...

Multiple 529 accounts

Hello, I have a 529 plan for our son with Vanguard, I am the owner, he is beneficiary. At the time of opening this account, our state (MA) did not give any state tax benefits. Starting in 2017, the state is giving 2K state tax benefit only for the plans which are opened in state affiliated agency (T...
