It seems like you elected to have the tax deducted from the conversion, thus the tax is an early distribution.

When performing conversions it is best to pay the tax out of pocket, but also so you end up with more coins in the Roth.

Frankly, I spend my free time making sure I am optimizing my tax strategy, now and in future years. And looking for ways to reduce expenses. For example, installing a terrestrial antenna in my attic and dropping paid TV service. I conservatively estimate I have save $150/mo*12mo/yr*12yrs = $21600.
