Re: Sacramento, CA Area Chapter - Master Thread

I attended the South Bay Bogleheads online meeting last Sunday, Aug 23, and simply wanted to thank Kevin D. for taking the time to lead a discussion on alternative investments. Kudos!

Also, just noticed the Sacramento Chapter had the pleasure of chatting with Mike Piper...wow!

Re: Larry Swedroe's New Book is Available Now!

I thought the cover to "The Only Guide to Alternative Investments You'll Ever Need" left much to be desired, but this one...yeesh! However, I'm sure I'll enjoy Larry's new book as I do his others.

Ordered. Please remember to click on the Amazon link from this forum when purchasing!

Re: How Fama, Shiller, Taleb, Kahneman, Thaler ... compare?

Protagonist's concerns mirror my own. Mandlebrot taught me three things: 1) Mandlebrot is the greatest thing since sliced bread! 2) Fama is my minion 3) volatility clusters Joking aside, my fascination with Simba's spreadsheet, efficient frontiers, factor zoo, etc, all in search of the "perfect" pla...

Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]

Finally got a round tuit to play around with longinvest's spreadsheet (kudos to you, sir, for the inspiration!). Although I've been using XIRR for a few years, it was quite the effort to go through old records across several accounts to calculate time-weighted returns. portfolio: 30% pre-Boglehead l...

Re: Convincing friends that they are gambling?

Several years ago, I gave out a few copies of the Bogleheads' Guide to Investing to family and friends. Know how many read more than a few pages? Zero...zilch...nada. Horse meet trough, or not.

Investing in the BH manner is simply something they'll have to figure out on their own.

Re: Best Online Brokerage - TD Ameritrade vs. Schwab

I currently have accounts open at both TD & Schwab, and there is practically little difference for me overall when considering costs, fund/ETF lineup, online interface, trading, research, phone service, etc. Due to market competition, I'd guess they will continue to run neck-and-neck for the rest of...

Re: Time + Savings Rate > Asset Allocation

Agree strongly that the perfect AA is not the most important thing. Much, much more important for the average retail investor's portfolio: 1. health (physical, mental, spiritual) 2. relationships (marriage, friends, family) 3. career 4. savings rate/lifestyle 5. tax considerations a. retirement (401...

Re: my wife the stock picker

The likely outcome is she will have a couple of bad experiences, and lose interest. This was exactly my experience. There was no reasoning with my wife, and she only stopped day trading after her account kept dropping, dropping, dropping in 08-09. She had a paid subscription to a radio host's "expe...

1) A few bazillion pages ago, someone had run an optimizer for the PP, cranking out 22.5 TSM, 17.5 gold, 30 LTT, 30 STT. With SD for gold much higher than LTT, would it be more efficient to have a higher allocation for LTT? Gold's pull during inflation seems to outweigh LTT's pull during deflation; ...
