Sorry for your loss. My experience is one needs to get the accounts legally in your name by presenting death certificate, etc then one can move the accounts elsewhere. I don’t know how soon they will let you end their advisory service in the process. Good luck.

Re: Breaking up with a financial advisor
I know a number of advisors but the one i'm probably the closest with I met a number of years ago. We met at a golf outing through a mutual friend and now we do a number of fundraiser charity events fairly regularly and have a lot of time to talk. we have all sorts of conversations on mutual funds, etfs, stocks, the market, portfolio construction and he's basically like I don't know anything about this product or that. He only really had a wrong super simplified idea of what index investing or "bogleheading" entailed. Never seen a SPIVA report. He just knew he needed clients and these were the products they should be in. His mentor and the managing partner of the firm really only /knew/knows American Funds and he's been doing thi...

Re: tracking net worth and asset allocation
I'm OCD...and enjoy it. I created my own set of excel sheets and update them daily. Not only do I track daily closing price of all my positions(within 2 Roth IRA's, Cash Management acct and a separate checking acct), but I track all my daily expenses and incoming cash in a monthly budget sheet. The sheet breaks down asset allocation and percentages accordingly. I can tell you at the drop of a hat exactly where I stand....but then again I'm recently retired and just started collecting SS so I have plenty of time. Updating the sheet only takes a few minutes a day tho and is well worth it...especially the monthly budgetary sheet. Daily? Wow. I update mine a couple times of year. I feel like ebeneezer Scrooge counting his gold coins if I do it...

Re: How not to get scammed when doing wheel alignment for $89 ?
You just need to find a trustworthy mechanic. Most of them are. I just had my son's car aligned yesterday and told them I thought I heard the growl of a bad wheel bearing. The alignment was $180 and they said the wheel bearings are fine and the sound was the cheap Walmart tires my son had put on it. I paid about $150 to have my truck aligned a couple months ago. I've never had a mechanic try to upsell me unnecessary work. Once or twice they've found something else that needed fixed but they were able to show me while it was still on the lift and there was no question it really needed done. My experience is most mechanics are motivated by money like many people and that may influence their decision on repairs. We are VERY lucky to have foun...

Re: Breaking up with a financial advisor
My advisor helped me get my financial house in order, and that’s huge. He was also my mother’s advisor in the later years of her life. I don’t like the idea of her losing 1.7%, either, but once it became clear that she had Alzheimer’s, I was relieved to have a professional’s help. Schwab says it takes 48 hours to de-link one’s accounts from the advisor, so the hemorrhage will soon stop! By the by, I think I’ve read on this forum that I’ll no longer be able to purchase more shares of my DFA funds, but that I’ll be able to reinvest dividends. Can anyone weigh in on this? Thanks! One call does it all … send them packing with their 1.7% thievery. My understanding is if you have a DFA fund you can reinvest the dividends … private investors can ...

Re: Five-Year Portfolio Check
I have been about 75 /25 most of my life (age 62) with a gov military pension. It is really a personal decision based upon your own willingness and ability to assume risk. If it worries you split the baby and do 60/40. You don’t say how much you have saved in relation to what your expected needs in retirement will be. How much do you spend a year … how many times that will you have saved at retirement after deducting your fers annuity from your spending? My experience retired in our 60’s is we spend the same amount we did before except for college, kids, and retirement savings. New roofs, kitchens, little boat, travel, dental w/ no insurance, windows, an occasional car, furniture, car insurance, etc add up. And we have more time to spend. I...

Companies financial situation and risk underwriters and marketing strategy in your location as well as your own individual factors such as credit rating and driving record and claim history may determine what you are quoted.
Shop around three or so companies every few years with similar coverage to see who is offering the best deal. I shop usaa, geico, liberty mutual. Over 40 years the best deal varied greatly especially when we had young drivers.

I’d go a little more c fund and a little less international in my tsp. Congrats on being so well organized financially. I have had great luck watching often for used, low mile one owner Toyotas and Hondas on Craigslist and FB marketplace. Only search individual sellers. Stay away from anyone who sells cars for a living. I want to see proof they have owned it since new and regular maintenance was done. Over a long period of time I have bought some nice dependable cars. Don’t be in a rush. If I don’t have time (May take months) to find the right car on line I’d just go buy new. Might be something that would work for you or not.

Re: Best place to get a hitch installed?
I have had uhaul do a couple hitches but with mixed results. Maybe check their on line reviews. Dealer may be best but as you can imagine it will be more expensive. I had a poor wiring job done years ago by uhaul and some hitches may require cutting plastic trim on / under rear bumper so you want it to look well done. The hitch install can be fairly standard but the trailer wiring might take a little know how. If your car is pre wired for trailer wiring it will be easier. If you have a decent mechanic you can buy parts on line and have them do it. Etrailer.com has hitches and wiring kits. Check them out. The internet and YouTube are your friend.

Might be some financial institutions that will give you a special interest rate on a mortgage using your assets as collateral if they are held by them. I’d check into that so you know what interest rate you would pay with that kind of deal. Not to be held hostage to interest rates when it’s time to buy, I’d start planning to be able to pay cash or pay a large portion of the 2.5M in cash. I wouldn’t save money I need in the next three years in equities but in shorter term treasuries / federal money market accounts that are paying north of 4.5%. So you have 500K equity in your house, you need another 2M. At say 500K a year cash saved x 3 you could get to another 1.5M quickly. If you only got to 1M you would still only have to borrow 1M so hi...

As a person who retired at age 51 then went back to work at age 53-60 to my previous job and retired again, I’d at least consider the idea you might not like retirement or consider you might have too much time on your hands or consider you might like the social interaction working. Either way as you exit the workforce save some options if possible - can you go part time? Can you consult? Are there other jobs you could get if you wanted to? Annual expenses of 20K a year seem incredibly low. 30K a year seems low too. Just A roof on a house might cost 10-15K. New hvac 5-7K. One dental implant 5K. Are we sure the annual expenses isn’t too low? What if the partner leaves or worst case has a stroke and needs care - can you afford going it solo? I...

Small business 401K - does owner need a financial advisor for the plan?
Helping a friend research changing his small business 401K provider. He has a dental practice of 5-10 employees. Currently he and his employees use an administrator and are limited to using American funds. He would like his employees (and himself) to gain access to low cost vanguard index funds and reduce plan fees. Researching the BH forum I see where others have recommended guideline.com and employeefiduciary.com as low cost third party administrators for small businesses. In addition to hiring a firm like those two is it “prudent” for a small business owner to also hire a retirement plan focused advisor that would help creat the paperwork with the plan but also add administrative fees? Personally I would not use an advisor but with our l...

Congrats on the money you have made. I’d take a portion of it and start funding your retirement by buying a low cost total market index fund/etf like VTI in a Roth or IRA. Keep investing in your business and yourself. Set a goal to save / invest say - 15-20% of your paycheck every payday moving forward for retirement. Never too early to start.

Re: What are the pitfalls of falling interest rates?
Bonds and bond funds go up in value which encourages people who see high returns to buy more of an investment they may not understand - Not realizing the losses they will take when rates reverse. We have seen that reversal recently after years of declining rates. As rates go down and money is cheap it can fuel inflation. We have seen that recently. That hurts consumers and workers. Businesses can get lax in their money management with low rates because money is easy to borrow. Amazon and facebook and other companies spend all kinds of money on silly projects. As rates fall it can cause equities to get overvalued as there are less places to seek yield / return on capital. We buy high ! As rates fall too low it leaves the federal reserve with...

Re: TSP G or F Fund
I keep my tsp account open in retirement solely because of the “special” G fund. I use the G Fund to avoid the interest rate risk of regular bond funds and the F fund has. Outside of the tsp I hold 1-3 year treasuries, CDs, MM funds to limit my duration risk although as we have beat to death in other threads the limits to the duration risk inherent in holding individual bonds are mainly psychological as there are still fluctuations in value thru maturity and reinvestment risk just like in a rolling bond fund.

Re: Can I Push IRA Funds From Vanguard to a Chase IRA Account?
I would imagine you can. Is it being too nosey to ask why? I have accounts at both places and I have seen no reason to ever move money to chase with the CDs and treasuries I can get at vanguard. Maybe there are some deals available for depositing new funds at chase. I haven’t seen any new deposit deals that have motivated me as of late when I can get 4.5% plus at vanguard in my treasury Mm account. Maybe I am overlooking something.

Re: Personal savings in a smaller bank
If your bank is fdic insured and you have less than 250K deposited there you are insured by the US government so sleep well at night. It wouldn’t hurt anyone to have some of your money at another fdic insured bank too in case of a bank failure or cyber attack that limits access to your money for a few days. I bank at chase because it has a branch 1 mile from my house and i bank at usaa because I was in military. No matter where we traveled folks were ok taking checks from those places without giving me a hairy eye ball of a strange bank. They offer good services. We pay no fees for banking either place. Chase has challenged my patience with its fraud alerts on money transfers but if that is the worst thing I can say about them that’s ok. Fo...

Re: Best Business Casual Pants (men)
I have three pairs of lululemon abc pants I got as gifts from my kids. Two pairs of lulu shorts. They are the most comfortable and best looking pants I own. They are like 70-90 bucks a piece but worth every penny as they last for years.Flashes1 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 8:35 am Lululemon makes a comfortable men's pant.

I’ll buy more and I am not a person whoever spends that kind of money on anything. You can get a lulu discount if someone is a coach I believe.

Re: Breaking up with a financial advisor
One call to Schwab does it all. If you have an advisor who has third party access to your Schwab account (ie you have agreed to allow them to manage your money and DEDUCT management fees), call Schwab and tell them you would like to TERMINATE the third party / advisor authorization / access immediately. Ask for verification from Schwab this was done. Follow the call up in writing to Schwab.
You don’t have to tell your advisor - as soon as they see the money from you stop they will call you. If you would like to. you can drop the advisor a note and say “you have decided to go in another direction.”
You don’t have to move a thing anywhere.

Re: Vanguard was the largest institutional investor in Silicon Valley Bank that collapsed
Excellent thank you. I don’t know how the new fund the fdic created will affect his business. Now we have to consider if FDIC insurance is really unlimited moving forward. I don’t like the gov insuring everyone to prevent bank runs. Bank leaders take risks, give out bonuses, investments fail, and gov bails them out. It’s not simple obviously.
