The US economy is a lot more complex than oil and rents. The housing market is booming in the suburbs, south and west; tech (including alternative energy) is growing and provides support to the entire economy that maybe only China can match. Doom, gloom and fear sell but there are plenty of opportun...

Sounds a bit ambitious for 8 days in the fall. Grand Canyon to Zion is a long drive, no Interstate. Lots to see but the day (sunlight) is going to be shorter. Again with the trick of using the Portfolio Visualizer to go back to the worst period to show 16 years of underperforming. Start in 2002 and the result is quite different. Why do you always use 2000 as the start year for the Portfolio Visualizer? If you start in 2010 a 50/50 QQQ/VFINX doubles the balanced fund. Indeed if you pick 2001 it's 50% higher. The only year it's lower is if you start in 2000 and that assumes absolutely no course correction.

You're allowed to change it. Total Stock, S&P 500 or maybe some QQQ for some spice is more than reasonable for the Roth. All of those give you international exposure anyway. Put the International elsewhere, if you feel you need it, at least until it moves with some conviction.
