Odd; I struck a pro-forma return in early January and determined that I could reduce my scheduled Q4 payment. On January 7 I logged in, canceled the payment that was already scheduled, added a new (lower) payment.

MD has historically been faster than Federal although I haven't measured lately. The acks come later (typically night of submission) but the DDs were often in 3-4 days in many cases. I can't tell from my return. When I file it is always zero owed and it has been a long time since my extension payment was off.beyou wrote: Wed Feb 05, 2025 10:30 am Wish my state was as fast as the IRS. On the other hand, the Maryland ES payment system is a mess - they often have jobs hung up and the debits don't hit the account until after the due date. The Comptroller has assured me that it is fine to put in the payment as being on time.

Last year's rate will be on last year's bill. I suspect the county also has it on their web site.
Perhaps the tax base has expanded and the base rates were dropped across the board, the school levy would simply be on top of the tax base. Some jurisdictions are not allowed to increase the overall tax or are restricted as to how much without these additional levies.

Re: taxes [Finding cost basis and how to note state tax-exempt income]
When faced with this at Taxaide, the first question I ask is "do I care?" -- I often prepare the return with a zero basis, then jam in a fake basis to see if the TP is in the zero bracket or otherwise has no tax liability. If the answer is "I don't care what the basis is because it has not impact," I process the transaction with a basis of zero.

Re: Surprised by IRS Tax Return processing speed for 2024 tax returns
seems reasonable for e-filed and DD returns that don't have complications. Their automatic processing generally works pretty well. Once you venture into complications, paper returns, refunds by check or errors on the return it slows. If a person has to get involved it slows dramatically -- and I suspect this year will reverse the progress made recently in that regard.
Thanks for the news. I start at TaxAide tomorrow and one question we always get is "when will I get my refund."

It has been a little while but when I initiate a bank transfer from my VG settlement fund, if I initiate it first thing in the morning it typically hits the bank by the end of the day. I know that an AMEX push to my checking account at USAA is reliably same day unless I initiate it late in the day.
I have never had a hold. I haven't done anything really large -- the only time I needed a large amount was a house purchase and I used a wire which, as you say is pretty much real-time.

Your approach is exactly what we did (starting in the 1980s). We had a savings and investment plan and the rest was up for grabs. I never had any problems. Our situation was a little different in a couple of respects. One, we never had "a number." Re: Vanguard’s Bond Site, from an iPad
For those of you who buy individual treasuries at Vanguard using an iPad or iPad mini, with which browser have you had the best success? I’m talking about the section you get to when you click “Trade Bonds and CDs”; this has nothing to to with bond funds.
As noted in this 2023 thread, Problem Buying Treasuries on Vanguard Website , “The bond part of Vanguard's site is a third-party iframe.” (tradewebretail.com).
As a result of this iframe not loading, I used to have to do bond trading on the seldom-used desktop. Not the end of the world, but since I conduct 99% of my interactions with Vanguard on the sofa with an ipad, I’m constantly looking for a way to make it 100%.

Re: Investing when you don't expect tomorrow to look like yesterday
Perhaps not the same but when I first went out to Europe to manage an accounting crisis to the ground, I met with the country controllers. We needed to shift people to some internal controls work but they were always busy updating forecasts to submit to HQ every month. So I stood up and said "Here's what we are going to do. Make one twelve month forecast. When next month rolls around, drop off the current month and re-send the remaining months from the last forecast. Come see me if anyone at HQ notices and asks."nisiprius wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 7:27 am The accuracy of tomorrow's weather report is not measured by the percentage of times it is right, it is measured by how much better it is than simply predicting that tomorrow's weather will be the same as today's.

Re: Investing when you don't expect tomorrow to look like yesterday
Your investments (including your human capital if working) should always be viewed as if a shock could occur to them at any time. We simply can't really predict when or what it is. Now is no different than 2007 (when I retired) or any other year in that respect. I had no idea the markets would crater shortly after I retired (not my fault!); I had no idea that the economy was going to crater shortly after I started my first job in business in 1979. yet, here I am - more assets than I started out with in both cases.
