Re: Opinion on switching to Vanguard brokerage services from the original Vanguard accounts...

Many thanks to everyone who replied with their understanding of Vanguard's two platforms! I appreciate the time you took. :happy I'm not clear (read: convinced) that it is the best option for me to take, switching my SEP-IRA account over to Vanguard's brokerage service. OhioGozaimas, thank you for d...

Opinion on switching to Vanguard brokerage services from the original Vanguard accounts...

Hi, Bogleheads! I have a question about an email I received this morning from Vanguard, and I’m not sure what to do. First, the history: I have two Vanguard taxable accounts (which contain several funds) that I switched over into Vanguard's brokerage accounts some years ago when Vanguard was first t...

Re: How to receive answers to specific SS benefit queries from the source

That's what I meant by "just in time." Had I not seen the articles and confirmed their import with SS, and had my husband not handled his "file and suspend" before the April 2016 deadline, I was told I would not have been able to receive spousal benefits. Hmm. That doesn't sound...

Re: How to receive answers to specific SS benefit queries from the source

Hi, neilpilot ~ Sounds like you've been through the wringer! I don't envy you that...and it's probably why I'm not anxious to call the main (800 or 866) SS number. Yes, I've tried to get the local office. By phone it was impossible: no answer. I faxed over an email I sent to the one (good) represent...

Re: How to receive answers to specific SS benefit queries from the source

vested1, thank you so much for the information! I think I'll try to work the math on my own--I'm told that SS is overwhelmed right now, so it may be quite a long wait on the phone. However, although no one can predict the future, I may be getting hot and bothered for no practical reason. If I can w...

Re: How to receive answers to specific SS benefit queries from the source

JoeRetire, thank you so much for pulling me back down to earth. You aren't the only one who has laid out the realities and suggested I calm down and hold off...wait till I turn 70 next July. What does "just in time" mean here? What do you think would have happened if you applied for spous...

Re: How to receive answers to specific SS benefit queries from the source

#Cruncher, thank you so much! I have a copy of my 2018 SS statement, which was issued in the early months before I applied for spousal benefits, and it does give me an estimate in the event I apply at age 70. The next year's statement does not; it indicates it cannot offer estimates because I'm alre...

Re: How to receive answers to specific SS benefit queries from the source

Thank you, LadyGeek, for telling me about the aspect of SS that is off-topic. I hadn't known, and in any event that wasn't the focus of my query. I will remember in future, however. 02nz, thank you! Raybo, thank you for your helpful reply. I've just gone online to my SS website (I'm "green,&quo...

How to receive answers to specific SS benefit queries from the source

Hi, Bogleheads, This may not be the appropriate subforum for my question, but I’m hoping a few members can help me out with my problem. As I’m sure you know, all local Social Security offices are closed until further notice; it is not possible to contact local offices by phone. Questions that cannot...

Re: Portfolio review?

Ah! That might explain such a wonderful annual gain. Apparently, the prime interest rate eventually reached 21.5% in June 1982.

I'm not sure when, or if, we'll ever see such a rise again. :)

Thank you, Wiggums.

Re: Portfolio review?

Heartfelt thanks to both of you, Jablean and HomeStretch . Seriously. HomeStretch , I have online accounts for all my DRPs, many of which are now over at Computershare. I intend to create a template of questions and to-dos that will make the transfer process as painless as possible (which is not to ...

Re: Portfolio review?

HomeStretch, you're right! I've just finished talking with a Vanguard rep, not one who specializes in doing this sort of transfer but knowledgeable enough to answer my initial questions. But the work is just beginning. I'll have to speak with reps from the management companies of my DRPs (except fo...

Re: Portfolio review?

Thank you, RevFran--I'll admit that it's a more doable idea when the total is within my range. :) I'll think on it. Again, thank you!

RevFran: I am in some ways in a similar position to you (though unmarried and 25 years younger, but why quibble)... Hah! That cracked me up. :D If you give me your 25 years, RevFran, I’ll gladly hand you my Aflac and Disney, Pepsi too. I do not know if you give charitable contributions, but if you ...

Re: Portfolio review?

I’ve been studying your last two posts, and I’d like to thank you for taking the time to give me your POV. Because you’re experienced, you sometimes write in a kind of “shorthand” that you understand and that I should understand but may not. So please forgive me for asking a few (probably airhead) q...

Re: Portfolio review?

I'm heading out in a moment, and I'd like to reply in more depth later, but I've just read your post and I'm a bit confused about the 100% MM scenario: Given that at present the MM is yielding something like 1.71% (it changes every week, doesn't it?), wouldn't that cause the SEP to lose money, or at...

Re: Portfolio review?

Thank you for the 72-year correction. My birthday is in the middle of each year (July), so I guess I was misinterpreting the timing--how my RMD will be taken out as each year is half over. You're right, too, about how much of my portfolio is in my SEP-IRA, and it's around $1.17M (not after today, th...

Portfolio review?

Hello, Bogleheads! This is my first post, and not surprisingly, it is a plea for a review of my portfolio. I’ve been lurking on the forum over the past several months, learning a great deal. And I’ve read a number of the wiki articles hyperlinked here; they too have been helpful. But I’m sure I woul...
