Re: Fidelity SPRXX Money Market?

The rates do fluctuate and are not fixed. The 7 day yield is annualized--that is, over the past 7 days, the fund yield (interest paid minus expenses) is equivalent to 1.55% over a 360 day holding period. This lets you see the trend--the one year (historical) yield is 2.01%, but money you're putting...

Re: Help - Negative Gold and Silver Portfolio

I suggest that you take a look at a chart showing the spot price of gold and silver over the past 30 or 50 years. It is all over the place, and, to me anyways, is nothing like the value of stocks. I have experience with many silver coins of a relative that sat untouched in the garage for 30 years. W...

Re: Value of Active and Ongoing Reading of the Bogleheads Forums

I felt the way you do recently, partly because I was overwhelmed with the topics on things that I thought I knew, but really only had a surface-level understanding of. I cringe now when I look at my post from a few months back where I was schooled on the Roth IRA for my income level. The thing I lik...

$1,000 for depositing $75,000 for 90 days. I can then withdraw that same $75,000 after 90 days, and put it back into the MM account where it currently sits. Am I missing a drawback to this?

Re: Why all the angst about RMDs and taxes?

I recall being stunned many moons ago when visiting my uncle, who was by far the wealthiest person I ever knew, to be suffering from some angst having to do with taxes. It didn't occur to me until later that he was about 70 1/2 at the time. Happens to everyone, I suppose, but a very good "problem" t...

What Happens to Credit Score when Freezing Credit?

I was about to get a Lifelock account. Before going any further, I did a little research on this site and...once again, I saved money by looking here before taking action. My credit score is hovering a little above 700 after recovering from being in the 500's (!), and will go up more as I've paid of...

Re: Injured at work, should I bill my employer?

Workers' Comp insurance coverage varies by state. In most states (of not all), it's no-fault. File a claim, and you should get reimbursed. The process is pretty simple for what you have.

What state are you in?

Re: Any reason to reinvest tax-exempt dividend into a fund with a 3.75% load?

Thank you for the replies. I’d love for her to move her investments over to Vanguard or Fidelity, but I think that would be too much for her at this point. She’s gone through a lot of changes recently, and would probably have a difficult time with leaving Morgan Stanley, who she considers having bee...

Any reason to reinvest tax-exempt dividend into a fund with a 3.75% load?

Mom's funds are in a Morgan Stanley account, which she has asked my sister and I to review regarding a CD maturing shortly. We've figured that out, but I've noticed some other areas of concern. What stands out to us most concerns her largest asset at Morgan Stanley, which is in the Franklin Californ...

Re: Best Option to Sell Long Held Individual Stock

Forgot to add - she files 2 tax returns. One for the trust, with income from dividends and that will come to about $40,000 this year, and a "regular" return from her pension income of $78,000.

Re: Best Option to Sell Long Held Individual Stock

OP - Do you have more information on whether this "family trust" is a revocable living trust or an irrevocable trust? If it is an irrevocable trust, do you know for sure whether or not the assets in it will be included in your mother's estate? It's a revocable trust. The stocks were inherited from ...

Re: Gov Pension -- Keep or Cash Out

My initial thought is to hold onto it, for a number of reasons. First, I was in your situation exactly, although I left the state of California at 37. Went out in the private sector, and did OK, but not as great as I thought it would, and then got the opportunity to come back into a great job with t...

It’s down to just above 28 today, and who knows what tomorrow after the lockup expiration of a good deal of shares (although CNBC just reported that 32% of the supply is underwater).

Re: 'Roth Contribution" into Savings Plus 401K

Earning over the IRA contribution limit... This isn't a thing... The issue is whether or not you are allowed to deduct the contribution on your taxes. If you earn too much, you cannot deduct your contribution, but you can still make a "non-deductible" contribution, then convert the traditional non-d...

Thanks, retiredjg. You state that I'm misinformed. I don't doubt that. :D The reason I thought that I can't do a backdoor Roth IRA is that I can't contribute to an IRA in the first place to start the process, since I am participating in an employer-sponsored retirement plan (CalPERS pension), and I ...

'Roth Contribution" into Savings Plus 401K

I currently have an amount that's been rolled over into a 4o1(k) plan with my employer, the great state of California. Their 401(k) plan is called Savings Plus, with Nationwide currently administering. I also have a generous pension that takes a healthy monthly bite from my paycheck, so I have not b...

OP here. Thanks for all of your wisdom. Mom's house is currently on the market, so I'll get to this issue after the sale. The house is currently taking up all of her bandwidth. I'll definitely have her turn off dividend reinvestment when we can.

Best Option to Sell Long Held Individual Stock

My 88 year-old mother owns a good deal of Exxon stock, which she inherited in 1991 at the latest, so she has quite a bit of gains. It makes up about 20% of her investments, which causes pretty dramatic shifts in her portfolio. She is a widow, so it's all hers. Most of the rest of her portfolio is in...
