Re: "4% Rule" ...is broken? [argumentative]

4% worked in the worst economy and that includes 50% bear markets. But nobody knows if future returns will be lower than historical norms, and if they are for how long. So we have a lousy economy for retirement right now but zero ability to predict 10 years ahead much less 30. I'd say it's the same odds as my weatherman getting the rain prediction right a week from now. Damn near zero. :sharebeer

Re: "4% Rule" ...is broken? [argumentative]

It's amazing to me that the same people who believe in backtesting SWR don't believe in backtesting the effects of valuations. The idea is not to expect "Armageddon", it's to be prepared for it. Last time I checked, 4% and 25x was not part of the Ten Commandments. Nor do projections of 100% TIPs prove anything - nobody invests like that or obvious reasons - even if it is true that it would support 4%, after taxes. And ad hominem arguments to debunk lower withdrawal rates and SPIA don't prove anything. With today's low potential returns on bonds and extraordinarily high stock valuations, I would be aiming closer to 3%, and I doubt Bogle would argue. As he said in 2011: "I like the Shiller P/E for two reasons: One, it's focuse...

Re: Can anyone explain Guyton Klinger like I'm 5 ?

Sorry but it's way more complicated than that from what I see. I can't even get the past the Portfolio Management Rule. I can see why no one wants to use this complicated ruleset. I can code in C#, PHP, JS, CSS, HTML etc..... but I'm not a finance guy and this stuff spins my head. If anyone can create a spreadsheet that implements all of the Guyton Klinger rules I'll be first in line to try it out. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5HHi4GwRKIralRxWWtBa0RLNEE Portfolio Management Rule. The portfolio management rule determines where withdrawals are taken from. Re: A costly mistake made by both investors and advisors

Why in the world would you think valuations are going to just stay at 26.83 for the next 30 years, when the stock market has never behaved that way in the past? I don't know how good of an estimate of the future it is, but what would you estimate Shiller PE to be in 30 years? If you're confident that the current value is a bad estimate, then you must have something else in mind that's a better estimate. What's the procedure and how do you come upon your answer? Or in the very least you could for example tell me if 20 or 26.83 is more likely, for example. I do not have an estimate. But I can say your estimate is unlikely to be true without giving you a "better" estimate. I'll even admit that your estimate (valuations will the same...

So for the Modified Withdrawal Rule.....you say..... Adjust for inflation except when returns are negative AND the increase would be greater than initial withdrawal rate

So if you have adjusted your withdrawal down below the initial withdrawal rate and a new year comes along, you can adjust back up for inflation ?

I'm in Charleston, SC and just bought a 2016 Honda EX (Mountain Air, great color) for about $23,000-$23,500 also a month ago. I had a trade. That's a good price. Just use the phrase "Out the door" when asking for a price. That means NOTHING else added to the price. I had the trade in, 2 fobs and title in hand so they knew I was serious. They offered $26k and I said I'm thinking of another number $22,500. They said $23,000 and I wrote a check. When you do it, do something similar and then say "If you throw in the Honda rubber floor mats and cargo tray, you have a deal. I bought those after though for $115. Re: Conflict of Interest

And as a reminder, a 3.3% is a bit higher than the 3% I'm suggesting for 40+ year retirement because VPW fails 100% of the time when you reach age 100. The strategy (and associated discussions) of VPW is/should be vastly different from "SWR" because SWR is a discussion about what portfolio survives , whereas VPW is designed to fully fail at age 100. Azanon, I hear you loud and clear but as a financial noob I can't easily reconcile that the 4% rule had 6.5% median SWR and 4% as worst case making me think that 4% should be more than enough, plus the fine kitces articles showing surpluses. It's like I have one ear whispering you don't have enough, another whispering you have plenty. Combining say a 10% chance of failure with a 10% c...

Re: "4% Rule" ...is broken? [argumentative]

The origin of the safe withdrawal rate was actually rather straightforward – it’s simply the initial withdrawal rate that would have sustained inflation-adjusted spending in the worst case scenario in (US) history. In point of fact, the historical initial withdrawal rate that would have worked for a 60/40 portfolio over any particular 30-year time horizon has varied between 4% and 10%, and the median is close to 6.5%. But since we don’t necessarily know up front whether the next 30 years will be more like the average, the highs, or the lows, the idea of the safe withdrawal rate was simply to treat every time period as though it might turn out to be the worst. from........ https://www.kitces.com/blog/the-ratcheting-safe-withdrawal-rate-a-mor...

It may or may not be surprising what years were bad years to retire: https://www.kitces.com/blog/the-ratcheting-safe-withdrawal-rate-a-more-dominant-version-of-the-4-rule/ If there is something broken about the rule it is that for the sake of safety the rule forces retirees to forego spending they could well afford almost all the time. Kitces addresses that issue a little bit. I'm suprised he says "But as it turns out, a relatively simple ratchet-style approach, where spending is increased by 10% any time the portfolio rises more than 50% above its starting value, can “dominate” the traditional 4% rule" 10% seems very little for a 50% ...

Having read what Larry wrote in the other threads, I don't think he is actually saying that you "can't" retire initially spending 4%. He IS saying the chance of failure on a strictly followed 4% rule is significantly higher now than at many points in the past based on stock market valuation and bond yields. And that seems plausible enough to me. That said, the 4% rule is very rigid and unrealistic. It is based on a simple model of constant 4% withdrawals adjusted for CPI. It is OK that the model is simple, but your behavior doesn't have to be simple. If you retire with the the firm conviction that if things look bad you won't tighten your belt and skip the European vacation this year, you are indeed more likely to fail. If you re...

Coach I would be happy to contribute more but fruitless when people deny facts that don't fit their narrative. And it's most often in my experience from people who don't have the technical background, In other words, it's not what a person doesn't know that gets them in trouble, it's what they know for sure but aint so, as Mark Twain and others have said. There are just limits to how much time one can spend. If I thought it would be fruitful I would continue. But I've learned in some cases it's not. This is one of them. You have someone who is not knowledgeable in the area saying the entire financial profession (note including the Boglehead's hero Bogle) is wrong. Sorry Best wishes Larry I noticed you have conveniently skipped a number of ...

This statement is completely false as demonstrated by people like NYU's professor Damodaran. Anyone reading his work or those of others on the subject would know better. And that's the problem with these type statements. And why it's fruitless to respond to such comments.
Best wishes
Larry
By saying its fruitless to respond to such comments you are really bailing on this civil discussion. If you want to educate then you really need to be even more patient.

I remember years ago reading that investing could be easy.
Yes it could be easy but we like to make it difficult. We could follow Mister John Bogle's advice of just investing everything in the Vanguard Balanced Index Fund and forget about it, but that is way too easy and too boring. Caveat Emptor, easy and boring wins the race.

Thanks for reading.
So you do balanced fund and 4% or 3% SWR. Worlds are colliding.
