Re: Hi! I'm high inflation. Nice to meet you.
So very thankful for a hard asset being invented 12 years ago. My S&P 500 holdings and real estate have been flat with the real inflation rate, my gold has suffered, my bonds have lost large sums of money relative to the real inflation rate... there is only one asset that is beating year after year and will probably keep doing so to keep my total asset allocation in the green. I am tilting to commodities and hard assets going forward. I have never distrusted our financial institutions and governments this much in my life. The fact you can insider trade with zero repercussions if you are in the right group is disturbing to me on many levels. What really bothers me is I see older people who are getting crushed with inflation. They complai...

Re: Experience with Fundrise
For me this is better then VNQ. The market swings daily and it is gutrenching. When it drops 20 or 30% I tend to panic and may do something stupid. I find the lock up a feature. Same with PMs and Bitcoin... I rarely sell those, but stocks, just seems too easy. I really don't like having everything tied to the market which becomes very irrational from day to day compared to alternative investments. I can handle some volatility in my total net worth, but the fear of liquidity events or sharp interest rates rise tend to sell of all stocks, including VNQ, regardless of fundamentals. Fundrise seems pretty disconnected from this risk. Having multiple streams of dividends makes me feel like I have a paycheck replacement. I know... irrational, but ...

Re: U.S. stocks continue to soar!
My first few years of investing were the dotcom era. The market is doing exactly the same thing. There are a few different conditions this time around, but it is just too close to the pain and suffering I went thru with a 70% drawdown because I thought tech was where it was at with no earnings (like many today) and panic that followed with many years of unemployment or underemployment. I don't ever want to go thru that again. Employers were pretty much jerks as they could treat you like crap as you were "lucky" to have a job in the tech industry at the time with rapid outsourcing. Having [expletive removed by admin LadyGeek] money (freedom fund) is almost priceless to me and the thought of losing it in a liquidity event is not wor...

Re: NUSI: ETF that uses a collar option strategy to protect against downside
Still very happy with NUSI. It is doing exactly what I needed it to do for my asset allocation and risk tolerance. In a world of negative real rates, we are being forced to be creative. The monthly dividend is psychologically helpful for me as well. I tried doing my own NUSI and I just don't have the discipline to do it right consistently. I will gladly pay a reasonable fee for that service. I miss my long bonds, but wouldn't have missed the crazy drawdowns. The only bonds I still have indirectly with NTSX. NTSX I still like the best as my core holding and NUSI just plays another part of my asset allocation. I have backtested max drawdowns down to under 5% while easily maintaining the 4% inflation adjusted SWR which is my goal.

I replaced bonds with NUSI. The monthly dividend is uplifting to see them streaming in (at 8%) and the downside protection is nearly as good as short term treasuries. This is my favorite etf now. I may get a 2.5% M1 finance loan and put it all in NUSI.

I love the idea of bitcoin and have 5% of total portfolio in it... but I would highly caution against going all in. Cathy woods (ark invest) said something super interesting to hammer this point home in an interview on youtube, something about, whenever I have done this good in my career something goes wrong and stops it. I also wouldn't have zero exposure to it if you are the type that will hate yourself if it does go to the moon and you were not apart of it. Microstrategy stock is another option if you want to own a stock and not bitcoin without paying the grayscale premium, I use this in my M1 account.

Re: Michael Saylor Discusses Bitcoin on Bloomberg's Odd Lots
Diversification is the only free lunch. I have bitcoin capped at 5% total portfolio allocation and it almost hurts a little to sell it because I like the thought of being disconnected from this funny money financial system, but I know from going thru the lost decade, this is the safest move for me. I have pretty much given up by putting logical thought into investing based on fundamentals. Diversifying is the only thing that will keep me invested without losing a ton of sleep. Losing money is just as bad as missing out on gains, so I feel like I need a little bit exposure to all asset classes including crypto.

Re: Michael Saylor Discusses Bitcoin on Bloomberg's Odd Lots
Michael Saylor would rather speculate on cryptocurrency than try to make his legacy software business competitive in the market again. There are plenty of software businesses that are growing way faster than the hurdle rate of 15% that he cites in a different recent podcast (https://www.theinvestorspodcast.com/bitcoin-fundamentals/btc005-bitcoin-michael-saylor-a-masterclass-in-economic-calculation/). The whole podcast episode is an interesting listen, but a really sad example of someone who is obsessed with finance and wealth as an ultimate end in and of itself, rather than thinking of wealth as a tool for accomplishing good in the world (whatever that may mean). I saw this and had essentially the same thought. I just don't get how somethi...

Michael Saylor's latest round of interviews has done more to convince me and hold true to my conviction that bitcoin is an uncorrelated asset that belongs in my portfolio on a permanent basis. I think I have listened to about 6 hours of interviews worth now on youtube. Is he a bit crazy? Ya for sure, but crazy people tend to change the world occasionally and we live in a crazy time. As part of a hedgefundie and golden butterfly like portfolios, it has worked out well to increase returns for the couple years.

VXX does work and what I am using, but you treat it like your home owners or car insurance... ya it looses value, but it is there to take on the jolts... and a little bit goes a very long way. With the massive uncertainty of the market in the coming months and the high CAPE, I am a bit overweight in VXX. I am ok paying a "fee" to reduce my max drawdown to make me stay sane in a market that can swing wildly like in March. Is there an alternative? Nothing else I could find offset a liquidity crunch like vol etfs. Bigern tested this theory here: https://earlyretirementnow.com/2020/04/22/three-equity-investing-styles-that-did-ok-in-2020/ I believe having a portion of gold (non leveraged) of at least 20% also helps reduce draw downs. Really happy with adding a small 5% of TVIX to this strategy. Feels like the missing piece to guard against the world is ending crashes like in March and was my biggest hangup of this strategy. Bigern also covered this on his blog which has some more data on this strategy. In a way, it feels like we are lucky to get to test some of this in the last couple months to know this will endure for decades.

Bitcoin is still more annoying to buy then gold and gold is already a pain to buy. You have to upload your driver licence, confirm emails, confirm everything, wait... wait... wait. I just did a small $20 transaction on two different platoforms just to see where the state of buying BTC is and I will stick with most of my insurance to the FED printing in easy to purchase gold from JM or APMEX or whatever.

Re: Will "work from home" destroy the commercial real estate market?
I could see a major scale down of commercial real estate after this. People are learning how to be remote and the advantages of it. Even in the tech world, management was resistant to working from home and it was seen as a negative thing. I think after this it will be seen as more normal. Everyone I talk to that I work with says they never want to go back to the 9-7 5 day a week, traffic hell, go into the office grind again. I think you will see more flex time available going forward where you can go to the office a couple days a week and work from home the rest. This will substantially decrease real estate investment and probably help with traffic.

Seems like a low estimate to me. Whole cities are hanging on by a thread. No small business wants to get into even more debt just to retain employees because there is no certainty that this is only going to last a couple months. Most are just closing and laying off. The small business loans are just window dressing over the problem and not going to stop the bleeding. I think the fed should provide a paycheck replacement with expiration date so people had to use that money until this thing is over because tiny unemployment checks and one off $1k checks not going to cut it... That would give a floor to the consumers and maybe keep the economy from completely freezing.

People are willing to sell the ETF for less than the valuation of its underlying assets because they need to generate cash immediately. When things settle down this should eventually go away. It’s bad timing if you are looking to rebalance however. Totally logical but I kind of find it difficult to believe. There's nobody out there, not a single hedge fund or bank or authorized participant that wants to pick up the freebie? They could arb it and still get out of their muni position if they're bearish on munis, I would think. Ya that is what I am worried about. Not apples to apples, but EDV (down 1.25%) is down too, should be up more then TLT usually.

I don't know if I would consider it "luck". MacroVoices and MacroVision was reporting on this in JAN and said there was real risk involved. On top of that there was the CAPE going parabolic like a hockey stick again and EVERYONE was basically euphoric 100% stocks or you are not smart kind of talk. I started moving to bonds on major up days around then. Once the 180 S&P 500 moving average crossed, I didn't want to risk it and went mostly into bonds, I guess the amount I moved into bonds was lucky, but I had this in my investment plan spreadsheet and followed it like a robot.MotoTrojan wrote: ↑Mon Mar 16, 2020 10:26 am A month ago this would’ve been lucky. Re: The end of cruise ships
I bet we don't have government bail outs for cruise lines, but I could see them doing this for airlines and a few energy companies. I have some very low limit orders just in case I can get some decent deals to play this bet.

Fed going to buy stocks. Can they buy enough? Another thing we might see is they just shut down the market.

In this environment I use gold, treasuries, and a little SQQQ just in case the gold and treasuries do not help enough. This is turning into a gain. Puts can do the same on something like HYG and probably even safer and more profitable once I go thru the fidelity gauntlet to get those enabled.

Work for big tech. Have not left house since sent home early last week. Told to stay home for a month. Lots of fear around here and disruption. Schools closed, streets empty, events cancelled. Kind of like house arrest.
