Re: Calling all Boglehead car mechanics

Have a compression check & leakdown test been done?

Have you pulled 1 spark wire at a time when running to assess if unplugging a specific cylinder causes less roughness compared to unplugging others?

Are the engine oil or coolant milky?

If you & the mechanic are still scratching your heads, strongly consider just swapping the motor for a used. Most cars are not that hard. I'd imagine am enthusiast car like yours, a swap is well documented.

^^ LadyGeek, your words are reasonable & fair. I do not disagree with anything you said. My lawyer has sent the seller a list of issues mentioned in the inspection report including the main panel & breaker. That was this past Thursday, I am awaiting any kind of reply. I honestly do keep forgetting I would be part owner of the entire complex, not just my unit. I can’t really fix my own unit’s issues & wash my hands from other unit’s risks or insurance coverage being dropped. ** I rambled for a bit below, not particularly important to this thread, but nonetheless some back story. ** I'm not particularly loving the idea of a condo even without the electrical issues. Re: Risks/hazards of Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok main breaker with GE sub panel

It seems very strange that the insurance company for the HOA has not inspected and pointed these out. They are a known hazard and thousands have been replaced. You may want to send some of the links to the HOA manager to forward to the board. A rational person on the board would want these replaced as to not incur liability if something should happen. I thought this too. When the property manager requested the inspection report, I got a little worried that they don't know. Now I'm thinking of I buy the unit, will there be a special assessment for this that I will be on the hook for? But then the property manager stated that panel & breaker are not the board's responsibility. And the fact their insurance carrier hasn't forced the issue....

An outside disconnect is often required by code...my purely spec townhouse has its whole panel with main breaker disconnect mounted outside.
Good point. Seems like semantics, but outside is only the main(no circuit breakers) & inside there is no single disconnect to kill the entire panel at once.

I guess your wording could also be correct. I'm just going by what the inspector stated in the report so it would hopefully be more familiar to more people.

Re: Risks/hazards of Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok main breaker with GE sub panel

In my experience over several thousand apartment units is that when the insurance companies inspect and find them they will want them replaced. Is the condo HOA the responsible party for this breaker since it is a condo? I would not buy a condo if the HOA is aware of the presence of these boxes and is willing to leave them in place. Do a google search and you will see lots of articles on the dangers of these. Given the relatively low cost of replacement, I just do not see why anyone would not just replace. The inspector even pointed out that on the distribution thingy outside the units that has 4 meters & 4 main panels, all 4 were FPE Stab-Loks. I looked at the other panels for many other units & the same, Stab-Loks. The property m...

Re: Risks/hazards of Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok main breaker with GE sub panel

Does the GE panel have a 100 amp breaker in it? If not, that's probably your cheapest option. It's even technically do-it-yourself if your so inclined, or have a friend willing to help, since you can shut off the electricity at the main and work on the deenergized subpanel. If you're in southern NH, I have a guy I trust. PM me if interested -- I have no financial gain from the referral. He is a sub for the HVAC company doing work at my place. If you have a main lug only panel (no separate main breaker), what is usually done is to put a 100A double pole breaker in the top or bottom corner of the panel stabs (closest to where the feed wires are, top or bottom). This breaker is just like a 100A double pole branch breaker and plugs in the same...

Re: Risks/hazards of Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok main breaker with GE sub panel

Breakers almost always add up to more than the main because you'd have to be smelting aluminum to use that much electricity at once. With the advent of LED lightbulbs and televisions, the branch circuits are usually lightly loaded compared to what they were designed for. (As a timely example, you can hook 40+ LED Christmas light strands together without a problem.) Even modern air conditioners and refrigerators use far less electricity. Your biggest users would be a hair dryer, toaster oven, microwave, electric dryers and ranges, and electric heaters. Keep in mind that it's 100 amps at 240 volts, which is (roughly) equivalent to 200 amps at 120 volts. You'd have to be running your dryer, range on broil / self-cleaning with all the burners ...

Re: Risks/hazards of Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok main breaker with GE sub panel

Does the GE subpanel have a main? If not, will it accept a back fed main (do you have 2 slots free and does GE make a hold down kit for that panel)? If so, to me that would mitigate much of the risk and is much cheaper/easier than replacing the main which probably requires coordination with the power company to pull the meter. I'm not sure if all the FPE breakers were a problem or just the 15 to 60 amp ones. Putting a main in the subpanel would move the overload and short circuit protection from the main to the sub. The only risk would be if the wires faulted between the main and the sub and the FPE breaker failed to trip. This approach is similar to using the NE tap rules where you don't have a breaker on the supply side but terminate the...

Re: Risks/hazards of Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok main breaker with GE sub panel

If there is a risk of fire due to shortcomings in the electrical system upgrading the breaker(s) for your unit would not reduce the risk of fire arising from the other units in the complex assuming many, if not all, suffer from the same shortcoming. Are you certain about the capacity of the wiring between main breaker and the sub panel? How do you know it is insufficient? What did the local building code require at the time of construction or modification? I don't know if the wires between the main & sub panels are insufficient. But I do know the 100 amp main breaker can easily be exceeded & the Stab-Lok may not trip in that event. And if the main was supposed to be limited to 100 amp, I know builders will run the smallest wire of ...

Risks/hazards of Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok main breaker with GE sub panel

I have put calls out to an electrician & general contractor with these questions. But I am looking for as many inputs & opinions as possible. I am under contract to purchase a condo originally built in the 1980s. The home inspection revealed a GE sub-panel inside the condo (which is in very good condition) but a Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok 100 amp main breaker outside the unit at the electric meter. I am aware of the hazards & risks of these breakers. But given the GE sub-panel inside the unit, have the FPE Stab-Lok’s hazards/risks been mitigated? I suspect the they have *not* been & the hazards/risks remain. The GE panel obviously has multiple breakers which sum to more than 100 amps. If I were to load each breaker in...

Re: New Oil Tank - "Upright" v. Roth?

The Roth will undoubtedly give you more piece of mind.

$1,500 extra over all the service years amounts to a "rounding error" financially.

If you sell the house still on oil, the Roth will be a great selling point. Compared to a steel that will absolutely be mentioned by the buyer's attorney that it is at its end of service life & needs to be changed.

If you stay in the house, you will have a fraction of the worries a steel tank would give.

Only if you 100.1% sure you are switching out of oil within 5 years might I consider a steel tank. Short of that, Roth tank all the way.

Okay, $1,000 is a juicy enough bonus that I am interested in moving some money to Merrill.

Regarding the acat fee... If I move $250,001 of ETFs to Merrill Edge, hold there until I get the bonus, can I make 2 partial transfers until zero dollars are left at Merrill with the $50 acat fee? I'd like to keep my all money at Vanguard.

Or should I move in $250,001 of ETFs, plus $1 of cash, then after the bonus, transfer out my ETFs & keep the $1 cash there to avoid the full acat fee?

Anyone with knowledge?

401K is based on net profit schedule C. If you are correctly taking your health insurance deduction on your 1040 (as opposed to taking the deduction on your schedule c), then your health insurance deduction does not reduce your schedule c net profit, & thus does not reduce your 401K limit.

Barring limits as mentioned above.
