If one person can afford the out of pocket maximum for HDHP, isn't HDHP always better? Am I missing something? My mom is worried about what if her procedure or medicine is not covered. However, HDHP and PPO should have the same coverage right?

OP here. Thanks for all the replies. I realized that I never took advantages of the tax-deferred feature of the HSA. I was treating it more like an FSA without the "use-t-before-the-end-of-year" restrictions.

Now I regret not putting more money in while I had HDHP.

I changed my job mid year. I had a HDHP with HSA at my previous job. I have a PPO with my new employer.

You do realize that the I-bonds cannot be redeemed whatsoever in the first 12-month right? It might not be good for emergency funds.
