Re: Secure act - should I shift to taxable

the problem with all the proposed solutions is that they require one reach life expectancy to optimize. That’s great if you end up living to 87 or 92 and have all the time and foresight needed to convert to Roths up to the top of your marginal tax bracket or the next, taking into account your heirs’ tax brackets, job prospects, marital status, future grandchildren and so forth. Unfortunately this will not be the case for many of us, approximately half of whom will die before our life expectancy. Some of us will get hit by a truck tomorrow, or cancer next decade, and so on, and for some of us that will occur while we are still gainfully employed, possibly at peak earnings. There will be no low income years to Roth convert, and furthermore no...

Re: Relocating to Seattle from Baltimore Area

re: Oblivious drivers toodling along in the Left lane on WA highways: I had to laugh when I read this point (made by a poster above) bc it's really true in my experience. I live in the SF Bay Area and do road trips to Seattle to see various immediate & extended family pretty regularly -- just returned from one 3 wks ago. Somewhere in OR (on I-5 North) you begin to see this species of driver. In WA they seem to become more noticeable. It's a very small percentage, mind you, but really stands out compared to what I've experienced here in CA or on highways in the East. To an outsider it comes off at very least as poor driving etiquette. In some instances where the drivers are clearly aware of cars stacked behind them, it feels like the pa...

Re: Relocating to Seattle from Baltimore Area

Just rent a little microtel in Seattle and fly home every other weekend. Why would you even consider buying, much less til after your wife joined you?

Re: Relocating to Seattle from Baltimore Area

For the past several months, I have been interviewing for a role in Seattle. I was unsure about moving, but the company is highly sought after so I continued interviewing not really thinking I would get the offer. Well, I went to on-site interviews last week and secured an offer! The pay is well above what I make - detail below. Current Life Situation: 30, no kids, own a home in MD with my fiance. Make about $135k and she makes $95k. I work remote and have a lot of flexibility and great benefits. Job Offer: Relocation package to Seattle, includes covering realtor fees. $150k + ~$60k stock a year = ~$210k total comp. Have to go to an office every day, but will be working at FANG company. This could really set me up for my career. Thoughts? ...

If in that high demand then it should be no problem to relist and rerent, even taking a reasonable fee from renter.

Re: Huge AIrBNB Cancellation Charge

Let's think about that. Let's say the host realized he had posted the wrong dates, and the room wasn't in fact available, and he realized this a couple hours later. I'd hope the renter would say, hey, no problem. I haven't made any plans yet. Stuff happens. Thanks for letting me know right away as opposed to a week later.

Airbnb and VRBO are dealing with small time hosts and renters. Human beings, not faceless corporations. Let them act it.

Re: Huge AIrBNB Cancellation Charge

Sure, he will learn a life lesson. But he would learn it even if owner refunded him all but $100-$200. Instead he will learn that some people are real jerks, and that gig companies like rideshare and the VRBO crowd like to have all the advantages of a single brand when it suits them best (VC funding, political leverage, legal maneuvering) but claim non employer status when taking more responsibility would hurt their bottom line (rental disagreements such as this, rogue drivers who assault their passengers, etc). Tibbits, your experience with Chase wasn't quite the same, as the car rental company furnished proof that "you" had rented. Ultimately it was they who made you whole. It’s not the AirBnB host’s responsibility to teach an ...

Re: Huge AIrBNB Cancellation Charge

I’m noticing three repeated fallacies in these comments 1. People call this policy covert, hidden, or act like it wasn’t shown to the user. In fact, it says very clearly ON THE SAME PAGE that one month isn’t refundable. I’ve attached the screenshot so we can stop acting like Airbnb hid something. This is on the listing page even on mobile! The OP’s son wasn’t paying attention and it’s unfortunate but to act like something was hidden is disingenuous or coming from people who haven’t looked at the UI themselves. http://i65.tinypic.com/293hu2w.jpg 2. People act like Airbnb should refund when the policy clearly states they owe money to the host and guests cancel probably 10,000 times per day so they can’t eat the cost... 3. People who have nev...

Re: Huge AIrBNB Cancellation Charge

Seems some people are missing the OP’s son cancelled within 2 hours part. I can’t believe anyone would think that the host is justified in collecting $1200. This isn’t a hotel where he’s cancelling 6 hrs before his reservation. He isn’t walking into the rental on day one and saying I don’t like the paint color, I don’t want to stay here anymore. He is cancelling two hours after booking, many weeks out. “Read the fine print” is not a justification. You can’t hide anything you want in fine print. If you buy a car, drive it off the lot, show up at home and your spouse freaks out and demands you bring it back to the dealer for a refund, should the dealer accept the return? Even if that all happens within 2 hours? What if they offer to take it ...

Re: Huge AIrBNB Cancellation Charge

This may be strictly the OP's son's fault, but the complete contempt with which the organization and the host treat their customers is Exhibit A as to why I've largely stopped using VRBO or Airbnb Hmm seems strange. Airbnb is a marketplace with hosts and guests. They have created clear policies and made a page that shows examples of when you can cancel under each policy and what if anything you’ll pay. If Airbnb did not enforce this policy, then they would owe the host money according to the terms. Since there are people who want money on both sides, the only reasonable outcome from Airbnb itself is to enforce the policy. As someone upthread noted, hotels charge for no shows or cancellations all the time. It all comes down to whether you b...

Re: Huge AIrBNB Cancellation Charge

This may be strictly the OP's son's fault, but the complete contempt with which the organization and the host treat their customers is Exhibit A as to why I've largely stopped using VRBO or Airbnb. Enormous cleaning fees and use fees etc that are not obvious on the initial page remind me of how airlines used to treat customers before Congress mandated showing the all in price in the search results.

While possibly more expensive, though often not, I am more comfortable with a hotel as I know Hilton and Marriott will treat me with a modicum of decency even if I make an honest mistake. I'd also consider a hostel before a VRBO. I just don't trust those organizations one bit.
