The passive investment bubble, a short video from IBKR [Interactive Brokers]

[Thread merged into here, see below. --admin LadyGeek]

Today people from IBKR posted an interesting video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGKV7xbn5nw and i was thinking to the situation where the ETF can be more liquid than the half of the S&P500 for example.

Multiple portfolio in IB

[Thread merged into here, see below. --admin LadyGeek]

Hi,

For the people that do not read the US forum, i asked there and I also find the answer of how someone is able to create multiple portfolios in IB. I am posting the link here just for information purposes: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=288981&p=4720432#p4720432

Re: Multiple portfolio / strategy in Interactive Brokers

Hi, I do not know if this has value but you can create multiple portfolio's in Interactive Brokers by creating linked accounts. This can be done from your account page and creates a virtual type of account that shares the same user and password as your main one. Why multiple portfolio's someone may ask: - I saw many interesting discussions about portfolio structure especially on the Non-US part of the forum. I think the people from EU, like I am, needs to be more creative especially since we are not that US centric culturally speaking. So, I plan to start a new portfolio that has more exposure to Asia and Europe but i do not want that to create noise on my main investment strategy especially since I will use just a small part of my money to...

Multiple portfolio / strategy in Interactive Brokers

Hi,

Anyone has any idea on how to define / invest multiple portfolio's in IB? I am not an adviser to have models enabled and I have a cash account (for a buy and hold makes no sense else). If I would have been just to specify the stocks the portfolio builder would have been an awesome tool.

I was not able to specify a list of stocks in the Portfolio Builder and this frustrates me a lot.

You are telling me that is safer to invest in an authoritarian state than into one with a history of hundred of years of free market?

Look what is happening in Hong Kong these days .... What is happening to HK stock market ...

What if tomorrow the Chinese government says that 1 yuan = 0.01 USD?

Not for me, thank you :)

Re: Ultimate Buy and Hold Equity Portfolio for Europeans

Correct me if I am wrong: the barbell strategy should work against a full passive portfolio that many people here follow because when it will be blood on the streets, let's say a 60% drop, their portfolio will follow the market. But it will not beat a portfolio that is rebalanced to some extent. In the past 25 years we had an average growth rate of 6% which is significantly higher than what you will get for those 85% kept in bank. Now let's suppose that tomorrow market burns (no previous growth rate, ideal scenario for your portfolio): 100k portfolio, 60% drop: My 80k suddenly worth 32k while my 20k bonds now worth 25k. = 57k Your 85k will be preserved while your 15k will worth 6k = 91k But let's suppose the same event happens tomorrow but ...

Re: Ultimate Buy and Hold Equity Portfolio for Europeans

Shouldn't the percents being reversed? Like 15% in cash and 85% invested? In the past 15 years or so if you were not invested in the market during some specific 21 days you would have lost 60% of your portfolio gains for the entire period. I need to look again for that research and post it here. If the market drops more than 30% we will be facing a depression which probably be accompanied by inflation and with a lot of unpredictabilities. We are living in a global economy and what has happened in 2008 was just a rehearsal, the next one will be much funnier. The only way in my mind you can protect yourself during those times is being invested in assets with intrinsec value in addition to the bullion you keep in your basement and hope for a r...

Re: How To Build an All Value Portfolio Based on ETFs for European Investors

The only problem I see is the bet on China economy which from my perspective is a losing bet. I was in Beijing years ago and I was deeply confused by the exchange rates and how value was perceived in general and when I heard that the rate is set by the government it was a sign that at the core there is no free market in China. They are faking it pretty well, as they are the Kings of copy, but the substance is missing in what we call competitive free market. So your affirmation that in 10 years nobody will remember US has only two resolutions in my mind: laugh at your ignorance or been freaked out because if that will happen entire world will be screwed and being invested in any sort of ETF will make no sense at all at that time. Countries l...

Re: Portfolio allocation - Romania

I am keeping AGGH for one simple reason: when the market goes down strongly, like 20% or more, the bonds tend to grow. And when this will happen I will sell all my bonds and buy all the ETF's I can buy at a discount. As the economy moves in cycles I know that within 10 years or so such opportunity will occur. Patience is the name of the game for me. This is how Barclays aggregate behave between a couple of big crysis: https://www.thebalance.com/stocks-and-bonds-calendar-year-performance-1980-2013-417028 For AGGH the ytd is 6%: https://www.bloomberg.com/quote/AGGH:LN which is way above the 1%. In my personal case my AGGH position is at 3.4% ytd, but I recently bought another good share of those. During all this time having those bonds will a...

Re: Cheapest way to buy MSCI World

I thought that SWRD (0.12 TER) + EMIM (0.18 TER) is the cheapest combo and if you go to a 88 - 12 allocation as you will lend somewhere around 0.13 TER per your portfolio.

If you take into consideration that having multiple funds will imply multiple acquisition costs I am wondering if it makes any sense the hustle ...

I buy funds 3 times per year and instead of 6 orders based on your model I will have 18, now depending on your broker and your terms may not be an issue especially if you have large amounts of money but in my case makes no sense. Keep it simple :)

Re: Using Revolut as complementary investment vehicle

As Romanian I use Interactive Brokers as main broker for financial investments. I am thinking to use Revolut as a sandbox for some company stock moves, at the end of the day I am risking just spare change. Especially because they don't have any transaction fees. This is why in the title I said complementary. For everyone else: Revolut allow la you to enable saving by rounding up your transactions and move that extra in a place called Vault. I am using that saved money for this. I get in Vault the equivalent of 2k USD yearly so investing this money in companies that I find worthy bring me a couple of benefits: - no additional costs (100 free transactions monthly) - keeps my baskets separated so my emotions. I do not want to make these moves ...

Re: Portfolio allocation - Romania

Market timing in my mind refers to small adjustments between a range of +/- 5% or around those values. If the market drops 10% sorry that is not anymore market timing, is like you are on titanic, you see the iceberg and you don't want to jump because you don't want to time it.

Portfolio rebalancing suits the same purpose, right? When you think that stocks are overpriced you move some of you gains into bonds and vice versa.

I do not believe in totally passive investment, I am not that dogmatic or purist. Also these events are rare so I am not worried that I will loose a lot re-entering 1-2 days after I have done my research to understand what is going on.

Re: Using Revolut as complementary investment vehicle

I am from Romania, East Europe. I am a heavy user of their product as I am travelling a lot, with family and for business. Currently I am in Bulgaria in vacation and some of my fellow friends where shocked that I can pay straight with leva (local currency) from my Revolut card and skip the outrageous exchange rates from the hotels. Because what they are doing is to change your money into euro (no matter if you have USD) and then to leva and you loose in the double exchange like 15%. With Revolut I just exchange some money in leva at the best rate possible (InterBank) and each time I make a payment in leva it is smart enough to use the leva and nothing else. Having like 30 currencies attached to your card gives you a lot of freedom and also ...

Based on our discussion this will be my approach for the following years:
- use 90% in quarterly investments (averaging)
- keep 10% within a quarter to spot good prices while I continue to learn. If no opportunities identified invest them with the next 90%.

In this way I will continue to learn, educate and experiment while I will keep deviations within reasonable limits.

Re: Using Revolut as complementary investment vehicle

Hi, I am a metal user and already bought a couple of shares with them just to test the waters. I noticed that monthly I save the equivalent of 200 USD in my vault and I thought it worth to try their platform for an year. The trading platform is available on their mobile application, is a section similar to crypto and you have to apply to have it activated. Currently as far as I know they have enabled it only for metal users but there are plans to make it available for everyone: premium and free as well, though the number of free trades will be probably lower. The platform is rudimentary, even more basic than etoro if you can imagine, but I expect things to develop in the next period. More data, you can read on their website: https://www.rev...

Using Revolut as complementary investment vehicle

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone has considered using Revolut as complementary investment vehicle. Recently they have opened the trading platform for their metal users and I was thinking that I can redirect the money saved through Vault into equities.

They are at the beginning, just 300 stocks and no ETF's but there are a couple of promising aspects:

- no transaction costs for 100 monthly trades for metal users:
- just 0.01% hold fees.
- minimum transaction value as low as 1 dollar;
- fractional stocks are available as well;

I am planning to buy some blue chips with good dividends with my spare change.

Re: Portfolio allocation - Romania

To a good extent you are right, that's why these days I will do my research to understand how I can identify what is the right price for an ETF and I will make necessary adjustments. For the time being I have updated the percent to 10% using advanced guess-ology. In my mind there are two ways of doing this: - buy every quarter a fix amount of stocks, averaging - keep the money when a buy opportunity occurs. The second way may be confused with timing the market but in my mind is not because the moment of purchasing can make the difference between a year of growth or a wasted year. What I am trying to say is that I do not try to predict a market dip but rather to identify when an ETF is sold cheaper than it should be. How do you decide when t...

Re: Portfolio allocation - Romania

Hi, I will start you off with a few broad points: * your allocation is more or less in line with the maxim of "your age in bonds". * I wouldn't be adjusting your allocation because a piece of it is not performing right now. If you want to diversify with emerging markets then make that decision in your investment plan and stick with it. * Your overall asset allocation choice are good. * Your allocation to real estate is very high, is this your business? If the RE is providing good income and doesn't have any serious overhead and / or depreciation issues then ok but its a risky (lumpy) asset type. I would suggest that you go through the full process of analysing your situation and prepare an investment plan etc. See: https://www.bo...

Portfolio allocation - Romania

Hi, This is my current portfolio allocation and I would like more guidance on how to prepare it for the next economic turmoil that everyone whispers about: - AGGH: 21% - EMIM: 15% (-6.2% DIP) - WSML: 8% - IWDA: 56% What have I done and what I am planning to do by the end of the year: - all my profitable positions have a trail stop loss order to secure at least a share of the profit if things go bad; - I will not touch EMIM anytime soon, but I will increase the amounts in IWDA and AGGH. I aim to be at 30% with AGGH by the end of this year. My thinking is that if things go bad I can sell some bonds to but the dip on IWDA. So a (30-70 bonds - equity).
