Re: Help Thinking about Home Purchase

Tell us how you calculate your opportunity cost? 50,000 in Roth IRA (currently in cash) put into a conservative investment would earn about 4% annually around 2,000 annually. 270,000 in a CD earning about 1% (currently at .8%) would yield about 2,300 annually after taxes So... around 11,700 saved an...

Re: Help Thinking about Home Purchase

Thanks. There must be something that I'm not understanding about the 4% rule/reasonable withdrawals. The way I'm thinking about it is that the principal will diminish significantly with those withdrawals over say a 10 year period (if it remains conservatively invested as-is) . Sounds like that must ...

Help Thinking about Home Purchase

Just wanted to confirm that my thinking is right in what I'm planning to do. I'm 60 years old, was laid off last year and am trying to decrease my spending, as follows: Currently renting at $2050 per month. Planning to buy a place for which the monthly outlay will be $750. Cost of that unit is $320,...

I'm a bit confused about this post - I wonder if somebody could explain something: I'm under the impression that the ACA (Obamacare) works on a sliding scale, the top of which is indeed 48,500. If your income is over that amount, you'll receive no subsidy... but if your income is, for example, $2,00...

Re: Laid off - 59yo - advice please

Thank you all so far for comments, all appreciated (a number that I hadn't realized/thought about). Sorry initial format of my post was off - will adjust. In the meantime, here are some quick answers to various (hopefully all) questions: - No severance - Currently receiving unemployment, runs out in...

Laid off - 59yo - advice please

I would appreciate any input with regard to my situation. I'm 59 and was laid off in March. I work in a field that favors 20 year olds... so job search is not looking good. Not sure I'll be able to get one; I'll hopefully be able to bring in $10k - 15k annually doing freelance work. I had been plann...
