Re: Do I need a Will? A Trust? Nothing?

Most of your assets that have beneficiaries named will pass outside the will. You might look at how your state distributes those remaining assets when someone dies without a will (intestate). You might not like the answer, or it may be just fine. But a having a will does simplify things for the peop...

Re: Estate planning - Attorney vs DIY

Agree - find an attorney who does estate planning for a living. Much like doctors, attorneys do specialize and you'll get a better product and it will likely cost less if you find a dedicated estate planner. Cost will be dependent on what path you choose - basic wills, or full up revocable living tr...
What about adverse possession if a neighbor has been using the property for say maybe 12 years or so?
Excellent point. Get it surveyed, and walk the property to make sure any neighbors have not been using portions of the property for a long period of time.... If they have, there's ...

Re: Best undergrad majors ahead of Law school?

As a late-in-life law school grad (approx 20 years between undergrad and law school), I agree with several of the comments already posted, notably - there is the chance that she may decide not to go to law school. Re: What are your thoughts on USAA for checking? Insurance? Banking in general?

Have been a USAA member for over 25 years. They have changed tremendously as they have expanded their customer base and grown to enormous proportions. Their HQ building in San Antonio is larger (square footage) than the Pentagon. At this point, they are nothing more than another very large corporati...

Re: Best secure email to use instead of gmail?

ProtonMail definitely. I used the free service for about a year, and then switched to the basic paid service to get another email address for my wife (both feed into same account which is cool) and I also get two VPN devices.

Re: Rent vs. Buy - Running the numbers, what am I missing?

One small note - in Texas, property taxes can vary significantly between counties. I lived in Comal and fared much better than those a few miles down the road in Bexar County. So if you decide to buy, look at homes in different counties and compare property taxes.

Re: Rent vs. Buy - Running the numbers, what am I missing?

There is a good Choose FI podcast on this very subject, but I think you've hit all the costs except one - when the day comes to sell you'll need to tack on the ~6% cost if you use a real estate agent. If you dont use an agent, the number is still less but there will be a cost to sell. The other cost...
