Re: Vanguard’s new Target 529s

I believe you can adjust it to any time horizon/allocation you choose. That's what we plan on doing.

Re: Help...we're getting a dog!

We were in your position a few years ago. My wife and daughter really wanted to get a dog. I like dogs as well but having had one when I was young, I know how much work they can be. Here's a few suggestions based on my experience, FWIW: 1) Reading books/watching videos is great, but I'd also suggest...

Re: Items that are worth the money for the quality

As a runner, I spend a bit more on running shoes and it is well worth it to me. Fifteen years ago, my orthopedic doc recommended the Asics Gel Kayano. Since then, I've had no running injuries and I used to have frequent knee issues. I'm sure those shoes have saved me lots of money in doctors visits...

Re: Going “all in” on paying mortgage

I have always prioritized taxable investing and access to liquidity over paying off my mortgage, especially given my low interest rate (3%). As I'm approaching retirement and my portfolio has grown, I guess you could say I'm going "all in" to pay off the mortgage. The main reasons are to lower my m...

Re: new iMac

How is the sound? Quite good. I got rid of my Bose Companion computer speakers. Only use the iMac's speakers. For the tasks you're describing, 8G is more than enough. But you're going beyond that, I think the extra memory is a good investment . Investment? I think you mean expenditure. I understand...

Re: iMac - wait or buy now, if so which one?

Agree with above about memory. I bought a middle of the road 21.5" iMac recently. For $1300 you would think that it wouldn't lag up. I don't consider myself a power-user, but boy can it drag. I will plan to upgrade to 16 GB from the current 8 GB and see how that goes. Does anyone else find M$ Offic...

Re: iMac - wait or buy now, if so which one?

We just bought a new iMac as they were updated pretty recently, I believe. FWIW, while I think the large screen is amazing, it's REALLY big. Depending on where you put it, it may be too big. If, however, you also want to use it for streaming TV, the 27" would be a nice option. Given the size of our...

Re: Paying off sub 4% mortgage interest rate early

My wife and I have a 3.0% rate on a 10-year ARM that resets in 2023. Despite the favorable rate and ratio of principal to interest, we are paying off our mortgage this year to reduce our annual expenses by about 30K going forward. We could certainly keep the mortgage, but we feel better getting rid ...

Re: Do you talk to your friends/family/coworkers about this stuff?

Rarely. I have a few friends who are passionate about personal finance, so we discuss things, but that's it. My experience is that people are more than willing to share personal information about their relationships/personal struggles but are not comfortable at all talking about their approach to ma...

The game isn't over yet. With 2M you're still in it and you will prevail long-term.

No hindsight in 2020! (my personal motto fwiw)

I know it's hard but try to stay positive and stay the course!

Re: Tactic to Induce Myself to Keep Working

Obviously a personal decision but your most valuable asset is time and unfortunately, none of us know how much we have left. If you and your partner want to travel together and he is significantly older than you, you may want to get on with it. Would you regret having missed that opportunity with hi...

Re: Which iPhone would you buy today?

I own the XS right now which I love. I would not trade it for any of the new models. My wife has an SE which she likes for the smaller form factor. Were she to upgrade her phone, I'd suggest the 8. She doesn't care so much about the camera or screen resolution, nor would she want to spend 1,000 buck...
