Re: 1-3 large stock holdings keeping me from reaching proper asset allocation - need advice

[Just noticed you said "It is all within SEP-IRA accounts." So if there isn't a capital tax issue, just sell it! -- looks like you will have an ordinary tax no matter what and I don't think QCD will help much unless you can significantly reduce future taxable income.] How much TLH are you achieving...

Re: 1-3 large stock holdings keeping me from reaching proper asset allocation - need advice

At various times people have felt the same about companies like GE, Enron, Kodak, Sears, etc. You know that you need to sell it in the retirement accounts where there are not any tax issues. You are exactly right and thank you. I have been sold Enron, Worldcom, Lucent, Blockbuster, etc and know the...

Re: 1-3 large stock holdings keeping me from reaching proper asset allocation - need advice

All the advice here has been helpful in making me get off the fence and do what I know I need to do. Just happens to be a big mental hurdle but all the input here is what I needed to hear. Thanks.

Re: 1-3 large stock holdings keeping me from reaching proper asset allocation - need advice

I agree 60/40 vs 50/50 is a non-issue. The issue is risk. The chances of large losses or of large gains are greater in that 9% slice of Microsoft than they are in bonds for that money. Only you A final official Boglehead comment is that no one should ever hold an investment for sentimental reasons,...

Re: 1-3 large stock holdings keeping me from reaching proper asset allocation - need advice

Is your reluctance to sell due to emotional concerns or are you trying to avoid some sort of tax consequence? I've never used a SEP-IRA, but if it's like a regular IRA, you can sell with no tax consequences and use the proceeds to buy what ever gets you toward your proper asset allocation. Regards,...

1-3 large stock holdings keeping me from reaching proper asset allocation - need advice

It took me over 30 years of investing, and reaching the age of 62, before I really bought "all in" to the Bogglehead approach. I had to get churned and burned in the 90s and then talked into AUM for a number of years later on. In spite of this, my net worth was always going up and I didn't always pa...

Re: Individual municipal bonds vs municipal bond funds

In addition, bond pricing for individuals isn’t very transparent and there can be high “fees” buried in the bid/ask spread. I decided years ago that paying VG 0.10% - 0.15% for professional management of a muni bond fund was a real bargain. Isn't that the truth. Buying a bond never shows a "commiss...

Re: would like portfolio review and advice

Looking forward to reading additional thoughts from some of those BH's with "sharp pencils" that you mentioned. :D Btw, if you’re not in the mood to spend a considerable portion of your life around the pencil sharpener, here’s what we did. We decided, based on nothing more analytical than wet index...

Re: would like portfolio review and advice

3. I don't plan on drawing Social Security until I am 70 and neither does my wife who is the same age. Is that appropriate? Welcome to the forum! Your claiming at age 70 (assuming you are the higher wage earner) is likely the best strategy. The higher SS benefit is the benefit that the surviving sp...

Sandtrap: Thanks for the reply. Gave me some more things to think about, including looking into an even more conservative asset allocation. Looking forward to reading additional thoughts from some of those BH's with "sharp pencils" that you mentioned. :D BTW, I see this was actually my second post b...

would like portfolio review and advice

First time poster. I have been really trying to raise my investing IQ with this site and others and taking charge of my investments after years of being more hands off on a good portion of my investments. Moved my last brokerage account just (that had a stockbroker tied to it) just a month ago and I...

Re: Laid Off - Want to Retire / Am I OK

I agree with the poster above that writes it's depressing that I should want side hustles with a net worth of $6 million at 51. But working and making money is all I have ever known and it feels weird to just start living on investments. Maybe I will get used to it. My first time posting here. I'm ...
