Re: Viruses and the overall future of the stock market

[Merged into the ongoing discussion -- moderator oldcomputerguy] With social media platforms driving fear and panic into every corner of every room in the world, I'm concerned that the stock markets are forever changed following this latest epidemic. We've had numerous super bugs since 2000, but no...

Tax Q re: 2018 Excess Contribution - Return/Distrib in 2019 (for Alan S)

Hi Alan (or anyone else who has TT and excess contributions knowledge), Can you please help me with the following: During 2018, I accidentally over contributed to my 401K by $10K (with after-tax contribution), front end loaded all my 2018 before and after tax contributions. In Oct 2018, I converted ...

Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2018!

Spend my days focused on restoring my health and wellness (MegaCorp almost did me in), and couldn't be more grateful to have found BHs as well as the FIRE community 3 years ago. At that time, I sorted through our portfolio and started scrutinizing our spend, and viola ... realized I could accelerat...

Re: All munis for fixed income allocation in early retirement for roth conversion?

As a fellow California family, and both retired now in our mid-50's with 2 college age kids, I modeled out a pretty similar approach as you. However, the big difference for us will be that we are aggressively doing the 401K to Roth IRA conversions (up to top of 24%) now, for as long as the current ...

Because I retired (due to a steep portfolio climb because of a very high-risk un-BH AA) and then I had time to read this forum.

Re: All munis for fixed income allocation in early retirement for roth conversion?
from LilyFleur When I think about large Roth conversions, I wonder if taxes will ever be this low again.
And this is the reason why my plan calls for aggressively converting up to top of 24% while I can, given that our COLA pension plus dividend income plus deferred comp (replaced ...

Re: All munis for fixed income allocation in early retirement for roth conversion?

Thank you for the reply! I think you are going about this backwards. By putting more stocks in the 401k/IRAs, you are pushing your "growers" into the accounts you are trying to reduce. I'd keep a large allocation to bonds in the 401k/IRA and have less to convert in the long run. This is a really go...

Re: How to Correct RMD to ROTH Rollover

The amended return should only report the allowable conversion on Form 8606 (34,000) since the 11,000 was not eligible for conversion. But the 11,000 will still be taxable as an RMD distribution, as well as the earnings returned as shown on the 1099R coded P. An explanatory statement should be incl...

Re: How to Correct RMD to ROTH Rollover

There will not be penalties of any kind: 1) No RMD failure because your RMD was distributed from your TIRA in 2018. Even though you converted it, the RMD is still deemed distributed. 2) No 6% excise tax on excess Roth contributions because you removed the excess with earnings by 10/15. The code on ...

Re: Semi-Early Retirees: 401K to Roth IRA Conversions (Should I or Shouldn't I?)

With current tax law reverting in 2026, there's a strong impetus to get your conversions in early. You'll want to be mindful of the Medicare IRMAA tier thresholds and they matter the year your spouse turns 63. I did some similar calculations this weekend I found that in my case the sweet spot was a...

Re: Semi-Early Retirees: 401K to Roth IRA Conversions (Should I or Shouldn't I?)

The RPM is much more time consuming and difficult to use but the outputs are well worth the efforts in our opinion. We use the extended IORP to quickly figure out our most likely scenarios. Then we plug those parameters into the RPM calculator for a deeper more detailed Roth conversion comparison. Y...

Congratulations on achieving your situation. There’s a fair amount to unpack here... 0. Take your time. 1. Do read as many of the other threads as you can find. 2. You should read the asset location placement wiki, eg to learn about tax efficient asset placement, namely try to keep your bonds in ta...

Re: Semi-Early Retirees: 401K to Roth IRA Conversions (Should I or Shouldn't I?)

Total Conversion seems doable. Wise? If you become subject to major medical expenses later in life, having them be paid for with deductible pretax funds might prove beneficial. Another consideration is whether you make charitable donations. If so, retaining some in a pretax IRA (would need to creat...
