Vanguard advertising

Does anyone else notice an increase in Vanguard advertising? See near full page ad on B7 of today’s WSJ. I understand competition is part of business. However, I always enjoyed how VG seemed to avoid the “selling” of investment products.

Re: UTMA accounts

Spirit Rider, Thank you very much for your explanation of tax gain harvesting in the context of UTMA accounts. In conjunction with your posts, I reviewed IRS Topic No. 553 – tax on a child investment and other unearned income (Kiddie Tax) as well as the 2018 IRS form 8615 instructions. Based on this...

Re: INTERNATIONALS 20% of Equities or 20% of Portfolio?

Taylor, Excellent summary/post on international percentage from 2016. I like the comparison of international versus US equities since 1996 where you note: “According to Morningstar, if you had invested $10,000 in each fund on April 29, 1996, you would now have $26,655 in your Total International Fun...

Re: How can I reduce tax exposure?

In order to decrease the tax drag of dividends in our taxable, we did the following: 1. Moved 50% of our bond allocation to taxable - used VG national munis (perfect for you living in FL). 2. Moved 100% of our VG international index to tax deferred. VTIAX has a 3% yield - roughly 70% of that is qual...

Re: Munis in Taxable or Bonds in the 401K?

OP - we are in similar situation and recently made some changes to our bond location within our accounts. We have a 20% asset allocation to bonds. I think there are good arguments for placing your bonds in tax deferred and in taxable, depending on each individual’s situation. There are many other pe...

In response to lazydavid:

Your question is very reasonable. See link:

This is the reason I wash them. I don’t eat the peels. Just when you cut into them.

Re: Do you wash berries?

Dilution is the solution to pollution. I always rinse berries and veggies. Larger fruits and veggies I use soap and water if reasonable (apples / avocados).

Re: Bond fund in taxable account

Not sure how to link here but vineviz had an interesting related post and explanation on March 17, 2019 @ 11:20 pm. Thread topic “Tax-Exempt Bond Fund options”: Vineviz posted: “Although the average duration of 100% intermediate works out to be similar to the proposed 30/40/30 portfolio, other portf...

Re: Bond fund in taxable account

I actually emailed the CFP and asked him to call me back to explain his logic on this very question. When he explained, I thought his main reason was to allow for selling bonds from a certain maturity depending on performance at the time of sale. If, for example, interest rates were falling, limited...

Re: Bond fund in taxable account

Thank you grabiner. I always appreciate your comments / knowledge on bonds. I like to keep it as simple as possible. Having a single municipal- intermediate term tax exempt - fund in our taxable accounts would be ideal, rather than managing 3. Thank you.

Re: Bond fund in taxable account

I thought I would reply to the original post since I recently went through this process. Previously, we held all of our bonds in our tax-deferred retirement accounts. Because we are in an elevated tax bracket, and because of similar posts on this site and white coat investor links, I had been thinki...

Re: Why Mr. Bogle prefers U.S stocks

Taylor, Thank you for summarizing Mr. Bogle’s position on foreign holdings. We have followed his advice over the past 10 years (despite being advised otherwise by our VG CFP) and limited our international AA to no more than 10% of equity holdings (“if you must”). As I look back over the last 10 year...

This keeps me grounded:

“I don’t know anyone who can do it successfully, nor anyone who has done so in the past. Heck, I don’t even know anyone who knows anyone who has timed the market with consistent, successful, replicable results.”

Emergency fund - VOHIX or VUSXX

We currently have our emergency fund in our taxable account invested in VUSXX, the Vanguard treasury money market fund. Wondering if it makes any sense to switch to VOHIX, the Ohio municipal Bond fund. Federal 37%. Maybe split 50/50? Thanks for input.

Every time I start thinking I can time the market, I remind myself of this quote: “I don’t know anyone who can do it successfully, nor anyone who has done so in the past.
