A famous NYT article: Why I am leaving Goldman Sachs.
https://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/14/opin ... sachs.html
Read the comments: SAD!
IMHO, if you think about it, money, power, and greed didn't originate from the financial industry. The industry reflects its retail investors, as the mass media machines reflect its viewers. To go against their clients' views and values would mean going out of business eventually. As Vanguard and Fidelity continue to grow, I wonder how the 8 trillion in Vanguard alone has already affected the growth of WS's biggest and most powerful brokerage firms.

Re: Vanguard Announces CEO Retirement and Appointment of President
Nobody likes change. I will be concerned if the new CEO has to increase costs. I like it just the way it is for my purposes, low costs with minimal need to trade. I got to a VG rep within minutes the other day because I had a 1099 question. I get it if others left for other companies with better service. It's a big industry and there are plenty of other companies that will fit each investor's unique needs. My simple needs are met by Vanguard 99%. The 1% is that I have a fixed account with TIAA with their TA currently paying 5.25%.

Yeah, it was thoroughly documented by previous research. In my amateurish analysis after reading about half, I thought he was trying to make the case that labor was a commodity. That labor was an important part of capitalism, not an annoying expense. He used the words labor and commodity throughout. Anyway, it was a dense read and not for the "faint of heart" reader. Somewhere in the blogosphere, I would love a book club discussion as I am quite sure I am way off! LOLs.

Here is another table for you to see the absolute tragedy of excessive investment costs compared to what I pay for my Vanguard portfolio, 7 basis points the same in 2023 as was in 2020. This table reflects just ONE Year. Multiply those costs by ten or 20 years. https://i.postimg.cc/2SrkzdJf/Costs-Comparison-to-07-of-my-cost.jpg I didn't major in math but I don't think that 0.07% = 7/100. 0.07% = 0.0007 = 0.07/100. (cowering in fear that my math is faulty) Otherwise it is a nice chart! Thank you! Those damn zeros. Can't live with them or without them, and the primary reason the Romans collapsed. :D When I insert anything math-related content as simple as this table on these boards it's like climbing into the ring with a few hundred Mike Tys...

Has Vanguard's CS gotten any better in the last few months? I'm really considering moving some assets over, primarily for their money market and to get access to funds that support automatic investing (which you can'd do with ETFs at Schwab). Anyone gone against the grain and moved from Schwab or Fidelity back to Vanguard? Customer Service since Covid been improved, they took a year three months to give me Flagship status, it was too long a wait. I had 2.6 million all that time. An appeal to Vanguard through secure messing is a request to be able to buy Vanguard PrimeCap, currently only open to account with Flagship above 1 million. Re: Vanguard Advisor Services
The thing is, you WANT a cookie cutter approach. The idea that each person needs some highly individualized investment plan is marketing nonsense. The vast majority of us need a handful of index funds and nothing else. As for rebalancing, it is entirely possible to go for years without needing it. The simple fact is that, if Vanguard is doing a good job, they will be doing nothing 99.99% of the time. That is what you WANT. Since that is what you want, the only question is how much is it reasonable to pay for it. Buying a handful of index funds, then doing nothing, is pretty easy. I would not pay someone 0.3% of assets to do that for me, but each to their own. Exactly my approach to investing, using Vanguard, using low-fee index funds or ET...

Re: Who has the LOWEST Stock Allocation??
This is probably going to be implicitly geared toward retirees, but I'm wondering who has very low stock allocations; say, less than 30%? And, why have you chosen the allocation you have? That's all, folks. I had 30% stocks. It's that thing we call emotions and past experiences. While I am risk tolerant, I am loss averse. I had 30% stocks for all of my 15 years of retirement. Why? I suffered a 70% in the tech bubble and I did not forget the "Black Swan" event, 9/11, that finished off my undiversified portfolio of 95% stocks, I was 55 at the time. Why 30%? Very simple. The Vanguard portfolio models says that 30/70 will earn about 7.3% while the 40%/60% will earn about half percent more, 7.8%. Too much risk for just .5% more. 15 ye...

Dan started 403bwise 23 years ago to help the 4 million public k12 educators with their terrible 403b plans. His goal was simply to educate fellow educators about investing in genuine stocks and bonds and to stay away from 403(b) high-cost annuities. Also traveled extensively and volunteered, still on my employer's investment advisory committee overseeing the 3 billion in employee assets in the 403b and 457b plans. It's a lot of fun. It is fun because I do all of this for free, with no competition, no deadlines, and nobody to report to except yours truly. It is truly a freeing experience and a frightening one too. The total bond market is "good enough" because I don't view any of my holdings in isolation. It is a major PART of my portfolio along with other fixed accounts (treasury direct iBond, TIAA traditional annuity, international bonds and CDs), and the fact that it is down last year makes little difference to me because the NAV was around $11.55 a share just 2 to 3 years ago! Re: Total bond fund vbtlx
So the yield on the fund is 4.46 not 2.8 ? It's complicated. A bond which has lost market value due to interest rate movements regains its value as it approaches maturity. (After all, it's a contract to pay $x at a specific date.) The SEC yield takes this price increase into consideration along with the coupon payments. I recently shifted some money into an intermediate bond fund as my allocation had drifted. Today its 30-day SEC yield 4.47% That doesn’t mean you’ll earn a rate of yield of 4.47% in the next 30 days even if the NAV stays unchanged. Oh no! You ruined my day. :happy I was just adding my two cents to the conversation (FWIW) that the yield changes frequently and doesn't mean anything to me as I am in this for the long term .

A bond which has lost market value due to interest rate movements regains its value as it approaches maturity. (After all, it's a contract to pay $x at a specific date.)

+2 100% for as long as you can stomach the volatility. Then add international and a bond fund. Re: I feel like I'm missing out on Tesla
When Tesla fell to $100/share I was thinking about buying some. I stuck to the index funds and that's all I own currently in a decently diversified portfolio. Now I'm watching Tesla skyrocket with more news coming out with companies switching to their chargers, AI breakthroughs, etc. I've been investing since 2016 now. How do some of you that have stayed with indexing longer then this not want to jump on some companies? My general portfolio 40% Total US Market 30% US Small Cap Value 25% Internatioal What a coincidence! This identical Tesla purchase scenario came up at our local Boglehead meeting. One fellow lamented that a friend of his sold one of his properties and invested the proceeds into Tesla stock well before the enormous runup in ...

Re: Thinking of moving to Edward Jones
I embarked on this journey for the old make sure the wife is set up with a money person as we move into retirement should something happen to me. Also, there is no automatic monthly sell/transfer funds at Schwab unless you use the Schwab Intelligent Portfolio Income program, which performance wise is almost as bad as using an AUM advisor firm. Many people, including myself, are confused by your question. As I understand it, you are primarily embarking on your journey because of your wife and want a financial adviser long term to help her in case something happens to you. You have done the research. You know what is at stake with EJ, and I suspect the EJ adviser will do exactly what you want (although this is debate about that!). However, t...

Re: Is Morningstar trustworthy?
I only use M* portfolio feature. I have a perplexed feeling about M*. I respect them for what they are trying to do in educating the investing public but my value system revolts against their active investor bias. If you are an active investor, M* is about as good as any other website that panders to the active investor. And good luck with that.
I listen to their podcasts and read some of the articles, but I have never used their articles or any of their podcast guests as a source of information to make portfolio changes. As others have said, their ratings are based on past performances and are of no use to me.
