Re: Car under 15k with high mpg
I drive a 2017 Ford Focus SE Hatchback purchased brand new (7 miles on odometer) from a dealer in April 2017 for $16,500 total out-the-door. It now has around 62,000 miles, and the average MPG over the life of the vehicle is 44 comprising mixed city and highway use, as meticulously tracked in a spreadsheet. I drive very efficiently, though. This far exceeds EPA estimates. It is NOT a hybrid -- 2.0 L Flex Fuel. I've only ever used 87 octane gasoline. Individual segments of 20+ miles have been as high as 60 MPG.

Also enter your street address and 5-digit ZIP code here without the city and confirm the resultant USPS corrected address including city and ZIP+4:
https://tools.usps.com/zip-code-lookup.htm?byaddress
Whatever the result, that's what USPS says your address is.

Re: Vanguard System Auto-Overwrite Address (Slight Rant)
ZIP codes can certainly apply to multiple municipalities. I ship packages via FedEx a lot for business purposes, and their system has you input the ZIP code BEFORE the city, and then you can optionally select the city from a pre-filtered drop-down list. It's not uncommon to see 2 or even 3 different cities listed for the same ZIP code. You might have been caught in such a situation. ZIP codes also can span multiple counties, which sometimes causes confusion.

I think the most satisfying gift is an anonymous one, because it is difficult to view that as being self-serving, and the bonus is you don't get immediately nagged for more.

But if you are going to stay at Vanguard, you really should go ahead and migrate to the supported platform and stop playing this game of resistance to change unless you have very compelling reasons to stay on the old platform. You will only find it increasingly more frustrating in the future. You're about a decade behind schedule already.

If you ever sell, as long as you sell ALL the shares that are currently grouped under average cost at the same time, then the total reported basis for those shares will be the same regardless of accounting method. That may or may not help you.

Re: Trying to Transfer Money and very confused about VG Brokerage conversion.
If you just let your money market dollars stay in the settlement fund of your brokerage account, which quite literally IS the Vanguard Federal Money Market Fund (VMFXX), you should actually see a reduction of number of funds as listed in your account. So are you saying 1) move all my Fed MM mutual fund - to my Fed MM Settlement fund? 2) Then close the Fed MM Mutual fund? 3) Then for simplicity sake, I would have only one Money Market fund, and it would be in the Settlement fund? If I am correct, is the settlement MM fund exactly the same in terms of it returns, structure, etc? I'm curious what the elements that are different between the two. There must be some difference or they wouldn't allow you to have them in 2 places (in the same IRA)...

I didn't know that (or not in that level of detail). Thanks! But I agree the iPhone 5 was easy if you can follow basic directions, except actually removing the original battery, (which was affixed with some pretty strong adhesive or adhesive tape on the inside).

I don't have the answer, but mutual funds settle quickly, and you can sell and send the redemption proceeds to a linked checking account in one step, rather than waiting for settlement and then requesting a separate ACH transfer. I'm going to say 3 days.

Do those claiming to live in a so-called "nice neighborhood" ever consider that this may in fact make you an increased target for such vandalism? Thieves have means to travel after all. A high density of moderately wealthy people with the stereotypical oversized-for-actual-use and elevated trucks and SUVs seems like an excellent target area with the additional benefits of a false sense of residential security and the thieves easily being able to justify their actions to themselves as a victimless crime against the affluent. My strategy is to live out in the country and to drive such a low-end and crappy vehicle that I am never a target for much of anything. Make sure to never wash it and to never adequately repair any incidental c...

Re: HSA Contribution Technical Question
This is one reason why I don't spread out HSA contributions. I front-load them and hit the annual limit exactly in 1 or 2 payment cycles and then set it to zero for the rest of the year. I don't want to play payroll games any more than I have to.
Maxing the 401(k) without missing any company match is the most work. Every time I figure it out, the company changes something. Used to be able to front-load without missing company match on the back half. Now I can't. Used to get paid 13 times a year, now 26 times. Delayed expected inflation adjustment to compensation by 2 months due to general economic uncertainty after I already had everything mapped out for 2023. Oh well. First World problems!

Yes, but who would be actively advocating that they couldn't stop the program until they got rid of existing paper? Shredders and incinerators get rid of paper just fine. The government should hire me as an efficiency consultant!
Do you think these bonds were really all pre-printed, or is it just that they haven't changed the design series since the Tim Geithner days? Perhaps like banknotes they cannot change without an official process and security overhaul?

Re: treasury I bonds purchase with a tax refund for 2022 tax year
My understanding was that they (Treasury) had finally used up their stockpile of small denominations (which resulted in many of us getting 12 separate paper bonds last year)... and are now sending out "large bills only." That leads me to believe that once the stockpile of blanks diminishes overall, the Form 8888 paper bond program may be discontinued. They are certainly not printing new ones; my 03/2023 $5000 I-Bond has Timothy Geithner's signature. Mr. Geithner hasn't been Treasury Secretary since early 2013. I've read all these theories before, but if they wanted to eliminate the paper bonds, wouldn't destroying the printed but unissued bonds be by far the cheaper way to go? They mail each one in a separate envelope, and then m...

Jethro Mobile appears to be a MVNO on the T-Mobile network. There are lots of MVNO's with low-cost service out there. $100/yr with no data sounds ok, but that's what I pay with data (1gb a month). I think you can find a better deal if you don't need/want data, but you'll have to shop around. I don't know anything specific about Jethro Mobile, but the customer service from the MVNO's usually isn't great - if you don't have any problems and don't need customer service, that's fine. My elderly mother seems to have all sorts of problems, and having a 'Verizon Store' near her has helped get all kinds of service issues sorted out... but for that convenience, she's paying several times what I do for mobile service.
