I haven't changed anything outwardly in 15+ years. Except I bought an equivalent model new car when my old one became untenable at about 300,000 miles. It now has several cosmetic dings that I haven't fixed. No one has any reason to be jealous of me.

This is not the first time in human history that technological developments have necessitated some infrastructure upgrades and adaptations. Is it really that big a deal?

It doesn't sound like the cost is a barrier to YOU, so is your concern about the cost to upgrade panels largely altruistic in nature, or perhaps driven by a greater concern about the expected societal consequences of doing nothing and continuing down the ICE path indefinitely?

I don't have the answer, but mutual funds settle quickly, and you can sell and send the redemption proceeds to a linked checking account in one step, rather than waiting for settlement and then requesting a separate ACH transfer. I'm going to say 3 days.

Re: Catalytic converter theft prevention?
Do those claiming to live in a so-called "nice neighborhood" ever consider that this may in fact make you an increased target for such vandalism? Thieves have means to travel after all. A high density of moderately wealthy people with the stereotypical oversized-for-actual-use and elevated trucks and SUVs seems like an excellent target area with the additional benefits of a false sense of residential security and the thieves easily being able to justify their actions to themselves as a victimless crime against the affluent. My strategy is to live out in the country and to drive such a low-end and crappy vehicle that I am never a target for much of anything. Make sure to never wash it and to never adequately repair any incidental c...

Re: HSA Contribution Technical Question
This is one reason why I don't spread out HSA contributions. I front-load them and hit the annual limit exactly in 1 or 2 payment cycles and then set it to zero for the rest of the year. I don't want to play payroll games any more than I have to.
Maxing the 401(k) without missing any company match is the most work. Every time I figure it out, the company changes something. Used to be able to front-load without missing company match on the back half. Now I can't. Used to get paid 13 times a year, now 26 times. Delayed expected inflation adjustment to compensation by 2 months due to general economic uncertainty after I already had everything mapped out for 2023. Oh well. First World problems!

Yes, but who would be actively advocating that they couldn't stop the program until they got rid of existing paper? Shredders and incinerators get rid of paper just fine. The government should hire me as an efficiency consultant!
Do you think these bonds were really all pre-printed, or is it just that they haven't changed the design series since the Tim Geithner days? Perhaps like banknotes they cannot change without an official process and security overhaul?

Re: treasury I bonds purchase with a tax refund for 2022 tax year
My understanding was that they (Treasury) had finally used up their stockpile of small denominations (which resulted in many of us getting 12 separate paper bonds last year)... and are now sending out "large bills only." That leads me to believe that once the stockpile of blanks diminishes overall, the Form 8888 paper bond program may be discontinued. They are certainly not printing new ones; my 03/2023 $5000 I-Bond has Timothy Geithner's signature. Mr. Geithner hasn't been Treasury Secretary since early 2013. I've read all these theories before, but if they wanted to eliminate the paper bonds, wouldn't destroying the printed but unissued bonds be by far the cheaper way to go? They mail each one in a separate envelope, and then m...

Re: Jethro Mobile
Jethro Mobile appears to be a MVNO on the T-Mobile network. There are lots of MVNO's with low-cost service out there. $100/yr with no data sounds ok, but that's what I pay with data (1gb a month). I think you can find a better deal if you don't need/want data, but you'll have to shop around. I don't know anything specific about Jethro Mobile, but the customer service from the MVNO's usually isn't great - if you don't have any problems and don't need customer service, that's fine. My elderly mother seems to have all sorts of problems, and having a 'Verizon Store' near her has helped get all kinds of service issues sorted out... but for that convenience, she's paying several times what I do for mobile service. What service do you use for tha...

I guess I am fortunate because I can see everything in my 401(k) by money source - employee pre-tax, employer match, qualified rollover, etc. There are something like 30 different possible classifications. And I can specify money source if I do transfers or other transactions. It will default to all money sources but it will ask if I want to specify one. I know they have to track all this in the back-end record keeping system but I guess they don’t see the need to expose it to the customer, despite its usefulness. Re: 401(K) - Pretax and Roth Balances Lumped Together
I have the same situation at T. Rowe Price. In most views, the balances seem commingled, but there is one place I can go on the website to see the breakdown by the different buckets, and like the OP I have several based on changes made to my 401(k) plan rules over time (like before and after it became a Safe Harbor type plan). I have chosen not to worry about it and to deal with it at the time of eventual rollover. It's clear enough that they are accounting behind the scenes and have the necessary breakdowns, though I would of course welcome additional transparency and resolution. I would not personally select different investments for the different buckets if given the option, so that's not much of a consideration for me.

I will say it more explicitly in case people are unaware.
TurboTax changes their fees based on timing every year. If you file in February, the fees are lower to begin with. Also check your credit cards for offers to save money or get a credit on spending with Intuit TurboTax products. Collectively, this really softens the blow.

You will be fine. I also consolidated assets at Vanguard. Personally, I prioritize optimal financial outcomes over occasionally nice-to-have features like chat. Me too which is why I move my assets to various brokerages to collect bonus money. Also a good strategy if you want to put in the effort and leave the digital breadcrumbs. I love bonuses on services I already use or plan to switch to for the long haul, but otherwise have not decided to take on that task. To me the difference between brokerages is small and the effort to transfer so small that it makes the rewards very worthwhile. I understand. It's a valid approach, and you certainly can make plenty of money doing it. I just personally don't want to take it on right now. With each ...

Re: Do you pay Turbotax $25 to e-file state?
No, I pay $20 by filing in February before fees go up March 1. I also have been getting a $10 Chase rebate in recent years, so net $10. My state does not have their own free filing portal, but otherwise that sounds like a good idea.
I typically have a refund, so I'd rather get it sooner, and as for printing a ream of paper, getting a large manila envelope, and physically going into the post office to weigh and assign direct postage, that was a hard no during the pandemic, not to mention the huge backlog of returns. If I had to pay a bill, maybe my opinion would change. I don't like the fee, but I can afford $10. The net expense increase is more like $7-$8 when you consider paper, ink, envelope, postage, fuel, and time.
