Re: Annual Rebalancing
Hi Taylor - Respectfully, I am not so sure the quote by Jack Bogle provides the complete picture. Mr. Bogle often said international “was not needed”. He would elaborate by stating in books and interviews, “that for those so inclined (paraphrase) he recommends no more than 20% of stocks to international”. In my opinion, this changes the message. I am interested in your thoughts too. Happy Holidays! Tony Tony: When I was writing my book, "B ogleheads' Guide to The Three Fund Portfolio" Mr. Bogle wrote a 5-page " Forward ." Jack and I had a discussion about whether the portfolio should be two or three funds. He suggested that 2 funds are probably better and simpler. I respectfully disagreed because I believed (and still d...

abracadabra11, I am torn between Jack Bogle's opinion and Taylor's opinion concerning international investing. Jack said no international and Taylor said 20% international. Vanguard thinks we should have at least 40% international. My decision on international is that I will wait until the end of 2024 before I invest more into international. If my percentage in international increases by that time, (and only then) I will consider adding to VXUS. Cubs Fan: See below. Best wishes. The risk adjusted return for the international stocks have been abysmal over the last 10 years. Re: What is the best fund or ETF for taxable total world stock market?
I’m looking for a total world stock investment to be held long term in a Vanguard brokerage account. Thoughts? Hi DPEMD - Excellent thoughts in terms of a fund that is low cost, highly diversified, and best of simplicity. There are a few items to consider: * Would this fund be held in a taxable or tax advantaged account? * Impact and ability of the Foreign Tax Credit * Rebalancing With a Global Fund, you will typically not be able to claim the Foreign Tax Credit. That essentially increases cost. However, this may be an additional expense that the investor is fine and willing to accept for the trade off of simplicity and avoiding rebalancing separate funds. Ultimately from a BIG PICTURE perspective, you are going down a good road. One Globa...

I made a big step toward the three fund portfolio today. I exited all of my REITs, which I have used as part of my overall portfolio since the very start of investing. That came from Rick Ferri’s book, which also included tilts in different regions and in small caps. But increasingly I see wisdom in simplifying. I never did the math, anyhow, to see if all the tilting helped or not. It’s all just a little bit easier to manage across our many accounts, and that alone I can appreciate. angelescrest: Congratulations! Mint is also closing down correct?
This is telling about the state of the personal software industry.
In many respects I believe this was inevitable. As the push to the cloud, real time websites, text alerts, informative statements, and other reporting and analysis tools online with banking and investments, in my opinion the value of personal financial software has declined over time.

I just don't fiddle my investment strategy much anymore so don't spend as much time reading about investing. Anyway, my question is: What has changed in the boglehead philosophy (or implementation) in the last 5- 10 years since I stopped tracking this stuff as closely? I know there's a bunch of stuff that's timeless in the Boglehead philosophy, but things do change over time (e.g Vanguard popularizing index funds, ETFs slowly replacing mutual funds, online brokers becoming near zero fee and basically identical). At one point, I thought Robo-advisors were going to become a huge part of the market but that doesn't seem to have...

I am unsure of these ticker symbols and I suspect other Bogleheads may be as well.
I believe ticker symbols are more likely to be memorized in the individual stock picking world! I recall those evil days before moving to Vanguard.
You may (or may not) wanted to edit your message as you might receive additional and higher quality responses.

Re: International Exposure without International Funds: Which Domestic Fund?
Jack Bogle said you don’t need international funds and with my investing experience back to the late 80s I am becoming more and more convinced he is right. International used to be 40% of my equity exposure and over time that has become 20%. This seems to have been exacerbated since the wide adoption of ETFs. From day to day the performance of US equities seems to drive the price of US based international ETFs seemingly without great regard to what international markets did overnight. Intellectually I’m drawn to modern portfolio theory but emotionally I’m pretty disappointed with international funds. I get there is some recency bias there since US has been top dog for some time now. I guess that realization keeps the 20% in the portfolio f...

Excellent advice for most investors. I am assuming you are still US and do not invest in international?

Re: International (Non-US) versus US Equities (The "Arguments")
Lots of good arguments here. I have allocated meaningful % to INTL my entire investing career - but for me personally I just can't ignore the fact anymore that both the total return over the last 15 years has been awful AND dividend growth has been WAY behind the US. I'll use 2010 as a starting point with the logic that the GFC was sufficiently behind us then and my data source only goes back to 2007. VEU had a dividend of $1.019 in 2010 and the 2022 dividend was $1.564 for a total growth of 53% or annual growth of 3.6%. VTI had a dividend of $1.148 in 2010 and the 2022 dividend was 3.183 for a total growth of 177% or 8.9% annually. It's simply not true that the outperformance over that time period was only due "speculative" retu...

Hi EMH3335 -EMH3335 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2023 3:25 pm I got an email from vanguard saying that in the new year those in PAS under $500k will be paying .3 of assets as well as a $75 per qtr fee. Since I have under $500k in assets and I’m in the 4-ETF’s recommended as a PAS member, do you guys recommend I go to Robo advisor until I reach $500k or more in assets? I have an IRA and a brokerage account.
I would recommend you do what you feel most comfortable with and allows you to not stress and sleep well at night.
I have family who engaged Vanguard PAS a few yeas ago and could not be happier. When questions or concerns arise, Vanguard PAS has always scheduled time to review and discuss.
Everyone’s needs and concerns are different.

Re: Charlie Munger vs Markowitz
Assume his comments are meant for a professional "know something" investor, with so much wealth they can afford to take a lot of concentration risk. Not for the average American, of modest means and with a day job, trying to scrape together enough assets to secure a comfortable retirement. Hi loukycpa - Excellent advice. While we often hold such investment experts in high regard, such as Warren Buffett, for example, we must realize these experts may not be well versed in individual portfolio construction. They are operating on an entirely different level. Best. Tony Tony where did you hear that from? Any moments of weakness the past few days? Does Charlie Munger also recommend the S&P 500 only for most investors as Warren Buffett has?nyejos11 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 8:25 am Could someone explain what Charlie Munger is talking about when he says that modern portfolio theory is nonsense? I’m not sure what he is saying.

Re: International (Non-US) versus US Equities (The "Arguments")
I very much like your takeaway summary, as I think it's quite honest and right in line with what I've seen you post on this thread while also displaying that you have actually taken other viewpoints and information under consideration. You think what you think, but you're not a brick wall. I just want to address this bit if you don't mind: - The fact that the earnings dynamics (and btw also profitability) has been so much better in the US doens‘t seem to bother the pro ex-US crowd - which I find curious as that is something I would want to understand better before committing large %‘s to ex-US I will admit that I was a bit surprised when I did my whole "well, what about PEG, then?" thing earlier. I wasn't expecting it to come up ...

I have watched clips on YouTube with Charlie Munger stating this. My takeaway is he does not beleive in diversification but rather a higher degree of portfolio concentration.
