Hold on to a chair or post. Body weight squats only. Can also try heel up on a book or board to shift to front quads. Do many reps. Never locks out at top. Stop short from locking out by an inch or so. Slow and steady. Quads will burn, heart will go, and lungs moving. If no leg pain this is good.

Forget squats, leg press, and deadlifts.

Re: Any Boglehead powerlifters?

I am 67 years old and have been lifting for about 2 years with very good results...at least what my goals are. I combine with exercise bike (or street bike in warm weather). 3 days of bike, 3 days of lifting. When I need a break I take it. The result has been a loss of about 25 pounds and a restructuring of my body with increased strength. I used a simple 3/7 method. Dont see much about it, but came across it last fall. Using a load about 65% to 70% of 1x max, 3 reps are performed, rest 10 seconds, then 4 reps, rest 10 seconds, 5 reps, rest 10 seconds, 6 reps, rest 10 seconds, 7 reps, the rest 60 seconds. Add a small amount of weight...perhaps 5 pounds and repeat. Then do a 3rd set. Then move to next drill. Thus, I will do 75 reps in about...

I would agree there is a recommended range of allocations with Vanguard.

If Vanguard deviated too far from the LifeStrategy and Target funds, I would expect that could potentially blow back and give rise to questions.

Re: Vanguard PAS and International Stock Allocation

Vanguard PAS advisors, which typically have the designation of CFP, must have discretion when building an investment portfolio that a client will be able to stay the course with in all markets. A portfolio that is best allocated for the clients timeframe, goals, and tolerance for risk.

I can not see Vanguard intentionally lowering the recommend range of international equity and bond allocations.

Is this a new policy? Certainly not sitting well with me.
In all my years with Vanguard, I have never heard of or experienced this. Typically when opening a new account, there is a small hold on transferring cash out of the account for a small period of time. If I recall that may be 10-30 days.

I would call Vanguard back to discuss further.

Well, I'm 100% US with 2.5 years to go until retirement. I've been US forever, initially due to ignorance, and most recently deliberately. I'm finally 100% indexed - the two-fund portfolio. At this stage of the game, do I take the next step and add international, or just stay the course? Perhaps the diversification maybe more important during retirement as less human capital is available to make up for 10 or 15 years of underperformance. Hi Blue456 - This is a very real risk indeed. Vince (Vineviz) has provided a graph that showed an investor retiring during a long period of US underperformance. May have been the 1970’s or 1980’s. When accounting for the returns over this period and drawdown, the result was the retiree had depleted their p...

I just finished the new book Inside Vanguard by Charles Ellis. Just thought I’d share three thoughts from the book. 1. As much as we Bogleheads look up to Jack Bogle, it’s probably good that he stepped down as Vanguard’s CEO when he did. Vanguard needed to change, and needed a new leader to drive that change (particularly by investing more in IT). 2. I now understand why the financial advisor Allan Roth recently said that of all the brokerages, he trusts Vanguard the most. (It has to do with the culture that Jack and subsequent leaders embedded in Vanguard). 3. With $8 trillion assets under management, every 1 basis point = $800 million per year that Vanguard can use to fund its operations and drive improvements. I enjoyed the book, but I ...

What are his thoughts on the portfolio Jack Brennan discusses in his interviews and updated book “Straight Talk on Investing”?

This portfolio appears to be low cost and diversified total market stock and bond funds with high dividend funds as a compliment to increase yield and provide income.

Also Jack Brennan does not appear to be a fan of sector funds such as real estate.

Yes but that would be a removable transponder. There is zero possibility I'd have the transponder in the car I needed it in when I encountered a toll, so that plan would be a complete disaster for me.
Our transponder came with some type of adhesive to attach to the windshield. We found a company online that made a small mesh sack the transponder goes ina nd hangs from the rear view mirror. That has worked well.

Re: Is the Boglehead way of owning a car the best way?

So here is the archetypal Boglehead car: A used 2016 Toyota Camry purchased for $20k + tax, owned for 10 years. Let’s assume its value in 2033 is $10k. That’s $1k per year in depreciation. The purchase was made in cash (because after all, “if you can’t pay cash you can’t afford it” right?), so that’s $20k that had to be taken out of the markets. A 10 year MYGA is paying 5% right now, so let’s say the cost of capital on a $20k cash purchase is $1k per year. So that’s $2k per year in ownership cost. What about maintenance and repairs? How about $400 per year? So that’s $2,400 total annual cost, ignoring taxes and insurance (more on this later). Now go to Leasehackr.com and check out the latest specials. Chris :happy
Hi Chrismckay -

I good question in this challenging interest rate environment!

For many years, I allocated 70% to stocks and 305 to bonds.

Then I considered were the future allocation at retirement. As a result, I planned to increase the bond allocation 1% - 2% a year. The result would be a smooth and seamless shift in allocation. This has worked well.

Presently, I have 65% to stock and 35% to bonds.

It's pretty much the only reason to have kids.

When they escaped grew up and moved away, I hired a guy.

:sharebeer
This is our exact plan and it is underway!

Our son (High School) has been doing this for two years and we pay him. In the years ahead, if he moves, we will in all likelihood hire our landscaping guy.

Time is precious and at that age I would rather have freedom on the weekends.

12 per year

I have monthly Household statements going back to 2006 in PDFs. The total for all these files is approximately 100mb which is smaller than the first flash drive I ever bought. It takes me15-30 seconds to download the monthly statement since I am in the account in the early part of the month anyway.
Excellent points!

Appreciate that.

Re: recession and stocks

Hello I know we don't know for sure if we are headed for a recession but I am trying to educate myself on what stocks to buy when the market is low. I read in a few different sources that the low might happen in 2023. I appreciate any suggestions for resources or analysts to follow to help me pick stocks. Cramer? Brown? I know in 401k you diversify with large mid and small, international, etc. Is there a strategy for diversifying stocks? One Healthcare, one biotech, one consumable, etc? Thank you for your time. This can be summarized as: “FINANCIAL PORN”! Don’t listen to the media. No one has a crystal ball that knows ahead of time. In other words, nobody knows nuttin! Own one or a few low cost and diversified index funds. Many years from ...

Re: No 2023 statements on vanguard.com

I guess my bigger question is how many Bogleheads actually download (or print) and save statements? Vanguard retains 7 years online if I recall correctly. Vanguard calculates and provides cost basis information for taxable accounts. I have never noticed an error but at this stage I don’t back in a recalculate and gave up Quicken 15 years ago. Vanguard provides Form 5498 for IRAs. This is important up to age 59 1/2. After that it does not matter for Roth and Traditional (with no Basis - Non-Deductible contributions). To think I used to have binders of statements and ultimately shred them. Interested in thoughts. Best. Tony I download my monthly statements and save them to my local computer, for which I have a defined backup system. I do not...

Re: Good time for small cap out performance?

There are trends in the market, one of which is that sometimes Large Caps do better than Small Caps and sometimes Small Caps outperform Large Caps. These trends can last for a decade or longer. Problem is, no one rings a bell or blows a whistle to signal when it is safe to switch from Large Cap stocks to Small Cap stocks. My sense is that we are in a period where Value, Small Cap, International are outperforming Growth, Large Cap, and US. I don't know for sure, it will be a few years before we know for certain. In other words, market trends are often known only in retrospect. So yes, I think it is likely we are in a time for Small Cap outperformance as Large Cap and particularly Large Cap Growth had led the market for so long. Wouldn't bet...
